Family Room Layout

Looking for advice on how to design our family room. This room will primarily be used as the TV room. The room is not very large and I’m struggling with layout due to the many entry points (garage, stairs to main living, sunroom, den/office). Could also use advice on flooring (we will be ripping up the carpet and doing LVP), wall paint, changing trim, couch color, etc. the room is very dark with no windows. The current entry to the sunroom is an accordion door, would be interested in changing that as well. We 100% want to keep the wood planks.

Also mentioning, we are not keeping any of the current furniture in the room

Do you use the garage door often? Do you need coat/shoe storage in this room? Just wondering if you need to partition the room to include a mudroom/entryway? I like Beverly's layout otherwise.

We won’t need coat/shoe storage. The main level will hold our “entryway” with shoe/coat storage

We were hoping to have a larger couch like a sectional or at least a chaise to seat more people. Do you think that would be too large for the space?

    You drawing is inadequate........

Note every opening, every wall, EVERY DOOR passage......the exact opening to sun room. FEET/INCHES.

Re do the drawing. every wall/open has its own dimension and upload new in comments

Looks like you’re working with a tight space and lots of doorways — smart call bringing in light-coloured LVP to brighten things up. For layout, I’d suggest: choose a compact sofa or recliner that doesn’t overwhelm, arrange seating facing the TV, and avoid oversized “marshmallow” furniture as one commenter warned. Re-draw the plan with exact door/window measurements to finalise arrangements.

Sectionals do nort seat more people than a sofa and 2 chairs and adding a chaise reduces seating BTW. I will wait for any actual help until you post the floor plan every measurement clearly marked

Can you help us understand who will be using the room. How many people do you see using the space on a daily bases - how many when you have guests? Little kids, teenagers, adults, older adults? How do those who use the room daily like to watch TV - do the like to sit up, recline, lay down?

Many people on this forum do not like sectionals or chaise lounges, but I find sometimes they work for the people who are using the furniture and sometimes they don't. I have a large sectional (3x2 with a corner. It works perfectly in my home. I am older, live alone, but often have 3 friends over at a time, sometimes 4 - wanted to be able to seat 5 older adults at one time. 3 of the seats recline, which some of us need due to swelling ankles. I like having the corner seat next to me to sit my sewing or crafting supplies while I am seated in one of the recliners. I also searched specifically for a recliner sofa that was comfortable when you lay across it because I often like to lay down on the sofa to watch TV when I am alone.

My sister has a 4 seat sofa with a chaise and it worked for her when her kids were little and still works well today now that she and her husband are empty nesters. Husband always had a recliner, but my sister and her two kids used the sofa and could stretch out some - not always be sitting up in a row. It is also great when we have holiday parties at her home. The seats fill up and we usually squeeze 5 across and then one or two or sometimes 3 will sit along the edge of the chaise. Others will tell you that a chaise is never used, but that is often the favored seat at my sister's home.

Thanks everyone. I will work on updating my drawing with all measurements. It's only my partner and me on a daily basis, but we plan to have kids in the future. This is the only room in the house that will have a TV for now and we are so excited to finally be able to host (I haven't mentioned that we are first time home buyers!!). I anticipate our average hosting number to be 10-15 adults. Although I anticipate spending most of my time with my guests upstairs in the living/dining/kitchen area, I want the men to be able to enjoy the tv and sports. I do not want a recliner, rather aiming for the most seating.

Instead of a chaise, get a sectional (or sofa) with matching upholstered ottoman(s). That gives you much more flexibility to move around for extra seating.

I cannot read any of the measurements on your drawing to advise you of the ability to accommodate a sofa with a chaise. Certainly no room for a sectional.

The orange indicates the walkways through your room. That leaves you with two areas for seating and the TV.

This is a modest sized sofa with a chaise Unless you find one with a shorter overall width, you don't even have the room to accommodate this.

That's why I suggested a sofa with two chairs because the chairs can be placed in the open space and walked around, but your sofa should be just a bit larger than a loveseat. A sofa with a bench seat would work better in a small space.

This sofa and chaise is available in a number of different colors but would fit.

We have family gatherings with 30+ people. My experience is that the women will squish in on a sofa and get close together, so will kids, but the men are more conscientious about personal space They prefer individual chairs or will sit on a sofa but not squeeze and extra person in. . . They don't use my sister's chaise, but will bring a dining room chair into the living room rather than sit too close to one another.

I would not do the sectional with a chaise. Possibly the sectional sofa with a couple of upholstered ottomans as suggested by one of the other posters. Guys will make the ottoman it's own personal seat if more seating is needed.

I may also consider getting a folding table and chairs set where the chairs store inside the unit.

    LIKE THIS

Gives you extra seats, possible table if they want to sit around with snacks and a drink (or play cards). Hides away and doesn't take a lot of space when not in use. I would also add a beverage fridge and a small snack station. Good for the guys and will be helpful when you have kids and don't want to run up and down the stairs 300 times.

I would call an electrician and get a quote to add some recessed lights. Surprised the builder didn't even add a ceiling mounted light fixture to the room.
