We close the window treatments in the bedroom at night for light control or if we are changing. If it is especially cold or hot we will close them for temperature control.

Other than that we leave them open as I get claustrophobic if I can't see outside.

I think I read an article about people not using window coverings much these days. Thats fine if , I guess, if people cant see in your windows at night.

I have a number of dog walkers going by at night, so I close the shutters. I also close the blinds in the kitchen.

If people leave their windows uncovered in the evening, I am most happy to peek in from the sidewalk.

We have blinds in our front-facing living room and sitting room, but almost never close them. We have a front porch and we are slightly elevated above the sidewalk so I don’t really feel exposed. Or, I just don’t really care if someone catches a glimpse of me watching TV in my pj’s.

We do close the blinds in the bedroom every night, though. More for light control than anything else.

I’d say the houses around us are probably 50/50 on the naked windows.

I have noticed the same thing as we are walking or driving after dark. I appreciate being able to see in so I can critique their paint color. ;) At night, I close any window treatments in rooms we are using that are public facing, as well as our bedroom window coverings.

Our neighbors are spaced pretty far apart. Min 2.5acre lots. Then the lots are wooded. Tall pine trees. We dress/undress in the walk-in closet...it's HUGE. When we first moved in our cat Peeka was a rescued de-clawed cat....we put in drapes in the two master suites. The NEW kittens...ruined the drapes...so we replaced them with 2" wood blinds. Unless we're sleeping in the room, the blinds are open. Note: When we first moved in there were NO window coverings...at ALL. Or...landscaping. Previous owner said he lived in a forest. He didn't need either.

I just purchased THIS stained glass window for next to the soaking tub. I've seen other neighbors either put top-down bottoms up cellular shades or stained glass in windows that "matter".

Note...I'm going to frost the large clear/mermaid scale portion of the stained glass....

We have wood blinds on every window and do close them after dark. It feels cozier to me, plus we want the privacy. We’re in a bustling neighborhood with homes close together.

During the day, I have them nearly fully open and our bedroom and guest room ones raised up (they overlook the wooded back yard and no one is behind us).

I have curtains on most of our windows as well, but they stay open unless the night dips down to freezing temps.

We plan to build on some land one of these days and I’ll most likely have either curtains alone or curtains with pull-down shades of some sort … bamboo, cloth, etc. Our last house was that way — we had beautiful views of a valley and city lights at night and just had curtains we never closed.

Most of my neighbors here also have blinds and close them at night. This is not a good neighborhood for peeking. 👀

The only time I close my blinds is when the afternoon sun is shining in on the west side. We’re not close to the street/road and neighbors in the back aren’t close either. Windows on the side are high so no one can look in. It’s not like we parade around naked so there’s really no need for privacy and we’ve never had peeping toms (that we know of). I feel like I’m in a cave if windows are covered - can’t stand it.

In the new house we have blinds on bedroom windows and master bathroom only and never use them. Front of the house has a lot of big windows and they're all naked. We moved to an area where there are very few people and we just don't need the privacy. It's different than when we lived in the suburbs and there were constantly neighbors walking and driving by.

I would open the bedroom blinds a crack if I had my druthers, but DH needs them closed, dark dark dark. And we keep the blinds on the two small windows that face the next door neighbors closed. Our house sits a few feet higher than theirs, not sure what they could see, but still.

Most houses here have the most-used living space, the family room, to the rear and the front rooms are not used as much, so the open curtains are an invitation to see their decor! But as some get remodeled and the closed off 1960s spaces opened up, there’s more to see.

Very few open view to upstairs windows, but the house across has a 3/4 curtain on an upstairs bathroom window. For a long time, from my tv chair I could see the light turn on at 9:45, the very top of a head go back and forth for several minutes, then the light go off. Life has changed over there so now it’s usually dark.

Conversely to this thread, I know people who leave the coverings closed nearly all the time. I don’t get that, I would find it depressing. DH would leave them closed if he had his druthers all the time. I give him nighttime darkness, so that’s our tradeoff.

I've seen THIS trend emerging. Heavy drapes that are stationary. A cute accent. A decor item.

I live on a pedestrian street, and during pleasant weather it’s not usual for there to be a number of people walking by. This is an area of small lots so no deep set backs.

Along the sidewalk facing windows I have bottom-up shades — I wanted the option for privacy while allowing light in, although I rarely do so. I draw the shades at night.

When my husband was alive, we never even had shades downstairs. The death of a large tree allowed too much morning sun and could fade the rugs, so blinds.

I don’t worry about the upstairs bedroom windows — no one can see in from the sidewalk.

The neighbors across the sidewalk have floor-to-ceiling windows across 2/3 of the front. When their drapes are open pedestrians are gawping at that house, not mine.

Only my bedroom shades are pulled down. But we have a skylight in the adjoining dressing area so it's not pitch black in the morning. I need sunshine to wake up.

Maybe if I had motorized shades in the downstairs rooms I might put them down in the evening, but I'd have to put them back up before going to bed. I need it to be bright and sunny when I come down in the morning. I crave sunshine.

I guess people driving down the street might be able to see into the family room at night, but we're on a cul-de-sac so very little traffic. And really all they can see is the big TV and whatever sports are on that night. It doesn't bother me at all.

In terms of window treatments, houses on the blocks around me have a variety. Lots of older homes, so sheers and curtains are still common. There are some blinds. It's a variety.

My house is on a narrow city lot, and I have neighbors close on either side of me. Those blinds are drawn once the sun sets. The front of the house stays open, as my kitchen and sitting areas are near the back. I have a fenced back yard that provides privacy for those areas, too.

I live on a street that serves as a major route through my part of town, but there is a stop sign 1/2 block from me. Drivers are watching for the stop sign and likely don't have time to look in my windows.

I think this is partly socioeconomic. People who live in very expensive houses here often have everything wide open. The low socioeconomic neighborhood a couple blocks from me, every window is covered 24 hours a day, with the possibility of miniblinds being partly open.

We have closeable window treatments on every window as well as curtains (some hung as Nicole’s photo). We close the plantation shutters in all the public rooms for light control only. Four of bedrooms overlook the golf course but some guests close the shades so they can sleep in. There’s no need for privacy except in the sitting and dining rooms, and if we’re in there at night we’re entertaining.

I once read that a window without curtains/drapes is the equivalent of a naked 90-year old man. 😂

I have blinds or plantation shutters on most windows, except for a few which are so high no one can see in them. Most of the ones in public rooms are wide open 24/7. If anyone wants to watch me clean, wash dishes, or play on the computer, knock yourself out.

One house has a front bedroom overlooking a sidewalk with pedestrians. That one has sheers over blinds which are opaque during the day.

I crave light and sunshine. I can't live in a house with closed window treatments 24/7. Just can't. I am way too nosy and want to see what is going on around me, and as noted above one house has spectacular views which soothe my soul.

We are uphill, above the road, so window coverings don’t need to be closed. Window coverings on back of house are always open. Only MB and living room window coverings are closed at night. All are open during day. I don’t know when I have seen sheers in a house, most often blinds or shades with drapes. Our drapes can be pulled, but never are.
