Will you be painting?

Can you post multiple pics of all four sides (or more) of this space? This wide angle shot makes it hard to really understand the size of the space.

Also, say more about what we are looking at. What is this seating area around the fireplace? Is it your only living room, hang out area? Or is it one of many sitting places? How many people are in your household?

How often do you have six people to dinner?

I see a dining table and chairs, 2 brown chairs with a table in between, a coffee table, 2 rugs and something blue. You're asking if these things should stay or go?

Open kitchen, dining and living space. We have additional hangout space in the lower level. Six people

at the dining table twice a month at least. There are four of us + a doggie:)..as you can see she took over

my sofa. Trying to come up with the theme, I

do like navy blue colors wood tones.( my previous home had lots of red) not planning on painting any time

soon.

I'm not understanding what you want? You aren't painting "anytime soon"

You like "blues" and they do NOT look great with that wall color/especially the rug.

New furnishings will mean what? A new couch ? Rug? Coffee table?

The wall color sucks it is not working . The rest I have no idea what you want from us I assume no TV in this space , open the windows . Waht do you want to keep? The rug under the table too small? The kitchen needs storage from what I see >We need a to scale floor plan of that whole area including DR LR and kitchen Every window marked , every measurement clearly marked , The stairs marked all the doorways , tell us where those lead . I actaully find blues hard to work with in big pieces so tend to use it as an accent

I happen to like your wall color. Navy blue and white might work, however, the brown chairs might need to be moved to another room.

Agree with shirl. The brown chairs are lovely but they do not go with the rug at all.

I don’t understand your wall color. Some of it looks like a warmish tan but in the insets and above the fireplace it looks gray. That was a really bad decision someone made to mix two opposing colors.

Getting advice on style really won’t help as it comes down to what you like and what works with adjoining spaces and your home in general. Look on line to see what appeals to you. Regarding color, pour over inspiration rooms with your wall’s tone and navy injections and then decide on how to incorporate.

Functionality is important and if you’d like help, provide a better picture of the entire area, dimensions/structural components, and what you will be keeping and plan on buying.

Accessorizing should come last, ie: the rug incorporating room’s colors and style and is large enough to ground seating area. How you address fireplace will have a big impact also.

It comes down to having a plan and it will be much easier to make decisions and end up with a cohesive space.

-- Elephant in the living room:the wall paint is horrible for that room. Paint it all a warm white or the white of your cabinets. That is the #1 thing people are saying, yet the very thing you don't want to do!

--If that is a fake fireplace over a window, then get rid of it. The furniture isn't even oriented to the fireplace, so why have it?

--Get a square or round coffee table and bring the brown chairs closer to the sofa. That will create a cosy, conversational group. You don't need to tacked on fireplace for that. Get ceiling to floor textured white curtains for the windows that match newly painted space or wood bamboo shades for all the windows.

--Blue and brown go very well together so that's your palette. You already have a rug in sofa/chair area. Good. Get rid of the rug underneath the dining set.

--Add a large art works on the walls behind sofa and behind brown chairs in subjects you like--landcapes, skyscapes, abstract, seascapes. These palettes will tie together newly painted white walls, blue sofa, golden floor, dining furniture.

Go for this feeling: cozy blue/brown living rooms with great art. Note bamboo wood shades . Those windows should be dressed up.

If we saw the total space viewed from standing in the kitchen, we might have a better furnishings layout for the area. Cannot see the total space from your photos.

Here are a few suggestions starting with problems with the light bulbs used in your ceiling fixtures. Can you see the difference in the color of the bulbs?

The oval coffee table is not working for this space. Given the small area provided IMO a round table would work best.

If you select an area rug that works with the color of the lounge chairs, you'll begin to pull the space together.

Usually I'd recommend art for the walls but when you have a strange configuration of electrical light switches sometimes using 3D items that can be assembled to create an interesting shape is the way to go.

For anyone following this post,

1. SHOW PHOTOS FROM ALL FOUR SIDES OF ENTIRE SPACE. Commentors need to see an entire space, not portions of it even if the problem seems to be about one thing.

2. Be open to suggestions you might not have considered instead of limiting Commentors. In this case, OP is willing to ditch furniture, buy new furniture, leave windows with skimpy coverings, but not willing to repaint after choosing the wrong color. A better paint choice and layout change would solve multiple problems here.

If you do want to paint get a 6 foot adjustable roller extension and a Wooster Alpha 2-1/2" angle cut-in brush. Painting is fun and makes a big change for little cost.

Can you pull the couch and the brown chairs forward and rotate the coffee table. Things seem too elongated in that area and too far for a conversation or to enjoy the fireplace. I would put a big colorful picture on the wall behind the brown chairs.
