Looks like I got things done just in time...

I've been activity limited so haven't been able to do too much outside other than some clean-up. I've been working on cutting back perennials little by little as time and tolerance allow but left the Siberian Iris for last -- I absolutely dread cleaning those up in the fall, I have a miserable time with it. But leave them for spring and it's worse, so I decided to tackle the last of them last week (b*tching about it the whole time, of course....).

Made it in the nick of time . The snow started falling this afternoon, 4-8" predicted for this round, with cold temps forecasted for at least the next week, night temps in the single digits = yard work is over for 2025.

I can relate! A couple of weeks ago we got about 4" of snow and I was nowhere near finished cutting back. I continued despite the snow and we had a bit of a warm up so I am still working on it.

I adore s. Iris but there is a lot to cut back considering the number I have. I often get to them among the first I cut back. I think I have 2 left. I don't mind them as much as you lol!

The first to get cut back is always Macleaya cordata since the leaves turn black after a good frost.

I was always obsessive about fall clean up until I learned about the importance of leaving stuff standing for insects to winter over in. Of course, this does make spring clean up more frantic and I have to start some earlier than is recommended.

I moved a few things and planted a few new pots in a renovated bed but nothing else got cut back. My sunniest bed is in the front of the house adn really it looks better with everything standing all season. If it gets ugly out there, I'll wish for snow to cover it all up. [g] It does leave a lot for the spring. I suppose it's better for the birds and the critters though, right?
