family room update

Trying to update a family room to be more adult. What can I do to make this a cool space to watch movies, play games and chill. Couch is going and probably everything else.

I really like your furnishings. I'm not in favor of being wasteful and getting rid of items that are perfectly good.

I would bring the sectional color up on the wall, purchase a larger screen TV for the room and install a wall hanging media cabinet.

Your ask confuses me, to the point I don't think it's a real person asking. The space in the photos looks very 'cool' and very adult has all the things listed for the new space. Are you saying you want a more home theatre vibe? Projection screen across the entire wall? A line of Barcaloungers with cup holders? I am wondering about the vibe. It gives off a basement room vibe but the full size windows says it's above ground. Possibly it's the pot lights and is the ceiling height a bit low?

I have no idea what you want .The room looks fine as it is so you need to be much more specific

    'More adult" It is "adult"

The verbiage isn't? as that sounds like I'm twenty three at best?

"What can I do to make this a cool space to watch movies, play games and chill." : )

Getting rid of couch.....fine! It's drab

Draw and measure the space, every wall, window where you enter. It's a basement? Appears so.

Either way, an accurate drawing, all the solid walls, window, openings, passages etc each with their own dimension, will get you a plan.

Add it in a comment , bold and legible, as a JPEG

I agree this is already an adult friendly family room. I also agree the tv stand needs to be longer but otherwise I wouldn’t change it

Family room update with cinematic direction

Why the mean comments? Looks like a space they have used for family time with younger kids and now they want it to feel more grown up as their family has grown up. Perhaps the word they were looking for is sophisticated.

What are your thoughts on Celery's image? I think it is great. Even if that is not your color choice, you can see how the same elements in different colors would work well.

Do you have the need for a table and chairs to put in place of the foozeball table?

There are no mean comments in this thread

    I would figure out

    1. What new furniture you want to purchase in order to replace the current sectional? For example, two sofas, one sofa + two comfortable accent chairs (ones that aren't just to fill space - but that will be actually used to watch movies/hang out)?

    2. Are you keeping the ping pong table? If you aren't keeping it, that will have a big impact on what to do with the space because you will have a lot more room. Would you want a second conversation area?

    3. What is in the storage piece on the back wall (opposite the tv wall)? I'd want to get rid of the open sofa table behind the sectional that appears to be a place for storing games. It would be nice if you could have better storage on that back wall - or add closed storage on either side of a longer media console on the TV wall.

    4. If you are removing the ping pong table, it would be nice to have a snack bar built in against that back wall (instead of a bar - you could use it for snacks/drinks etc. (I'm assuming that this is a basement - my basement has windows like yours - it's a walk out - so, the windows don't automatically negate that the room is in a basement).

If you add a sketch of the area that includes the dimensions of walls/windows/etc., we'd have a better idea of how much space you are working with (+ answering whether the ping pong table will be staying or leaving).

So I assume you did not like our comments since we get zero back from you . Why did you post at all ?

Thank you so much for the inspirational pictures. That is super helpful! When you have had a rec room/playroom for a child that has now gone to college it is hard to know what the space can look like and difficult to know what you want.

We want this space to be a place we watch movies and entertain. It is an upstairs area (no basements in this area). There is now an open 1/2 wall to downstairs.

Everything can go except the row of bookshelves on the back wall. It has all seen it's better day.

    Thanks for your patience.

What do you want in the space? A games area and a tv/lounge area?

    Drawing is super helpful!

Still the goal below? Yes, we assume?

    Any particulars on games?

Currently there is a ping pong table, I think, and a small two person table. Do you want games like that set up or more like one table with multiple chairs and no ping pong? When you say play games what goes of things are you looking at?

Definitely a tv watching lounging area. Is a sectional the best option? We love a sectional with an ottoman that everyone can put their feet on and stretch out, but still isn’t do deep that people can comfortably sit on to chat.

The ping pong table can go. It does not get any playing time.

I love the idea of a table for multiple people to play games on.

Sectionals get a lot of hate in this group but it really depends on how you use the space. If your family is casual and hangs out and watches tv and movies and sports and your friends are similar a sectional can be nice. But you have a generous space and it may also make more sense to do sofas and chairs.

Our sectional has gotten lots of use so I feel like it would be nice to have another. Would like a large ottoman instead of a coffee table as well. Could the last cushion section on the sectional (by the floor lamp) be taken off and a chair go there? Or that just a waste?

If I get rid of the coffee table and go with a ottoman then I guess I will need some sort of sofa back table to put drinks on?

Maureen you captured my style as if you know what I am thinking!

You can always place a tray on the ottoman for drinks. But your room is large and can have end tables and even a behind the couch table if planned well.

Thank you! I would love for this space to be our new living room.

I am thinking card games/board games, etc.

If you are getting rid of the ping pong table, use your sketching to try out a TV viewing side ( sofas or sectional) , but include end tables , and a game table / armchair area.
Do you have any idea of guests and types of games? To start thinking about, 1 nice 4-6 person round table & comfy chairs, maybe on casters, or 4- person square and room to move it a bit and add a card table for a second foursome. Jigsaw puzzles? Also could use for some crafts.
    Mah jongg, anyone?

Do something with the piece at the back of the room. This space makes the room grown up.

Add some seating for the t v, conversation, apps, drinks (adults only, bring your I.D.).

Other end of room, your choice for game table, etc.
