Team picture light or no? Update

last month
last modified: last month

I just finished putting up new bird prints in my small narrow hallway. I had planned on mounting a picture light above. Now i‘m wondering if it’s too much? Mostly for looks, would probably only turn on for holiday get togethers. Like a night light for the hallway. What do you think?

View from the bathroom.

Thanks!

I'm always a fan of a picture light. I would have chose black but brass works fine too. Nice pictures. Great use of a small hall.

    Yes.

The more sources and more varied sources of light, the better. Always. Unless you are evading capture.

    Love the birds!

I like those lights for oil or acrylic type paintings.

i’m not a fan of the light above those prints..

    100% yes.

    Love the prints.

@Kendrah, I debated on choosing black or brass. The ceiling light is white and brass and the bathroom sconces are brass, so that’s why I chose the brass. Thank you!

@mtnrdredux_gw, too funny! I’m loving the birds, it only took me 3 years to decide!

    @eld6161, thanks for your thoughts!

I'm not sure, can I ask a few questions?

What is the projection of the light? What is the height also? As a tall person in a tall family, we all have to duck when going up and down DD's staircases due to sconces. On the "up" stairs, the railing is open and the sconces are obviously on the other wall. On the "down" staircase, the sconces and rail are on the same side.

Wanna know how many times we have all had a hit or near miss with our heads on those darn lights? Enough that we have looked at low projection lights!

I like the look without the light but if I saw it at night maybe I would change my mind.. The lamp scale looks big to me.

@RNmomof2 zone 5, good questions. Maybe the scale is why I wasn’t sure.

The projection is 7 1/2” and the light is 26” wide. To the top of the pics from the floor is 77” and 37” in width total. Our tallest family member is just under 6’. I could look for something smaller.

    Thanks!

Ok, hard to tell the height in pic from the shoulder in the pic. I was just picturing dodging the end of the light every time I went down the hall!

Do the lights come in a smaller diameter? Maybe that would help it not look so over bearing in relation to the pics.

I agree with eld. I also find it odd to hang one in a hallway.

Wondering does the light fade prints like that? They are very handsome.

does the light fade prints like that

    Sunlight some times.

Pic lights? highly unlikely. If necessary, the choice of glass and/or bulb will solve the issue

Really? but hallways are prime real estate for art .. .and hence pic lights too

I decided i’ll exchange this light for one slightly smaller. I do like the little extra it adds to the space. Thanks all!

@carolb_w_fl_coastal_9/10, I’m not sure about fading, but the light won’t be on very often.

@nicole, a new one has already been ordered. TBD. :)

I think the scale of the one in your original picture is good. Too small and the light will cast a weird shadow on the edge of the pictures?

@Sueb20, that makes sense to me :). I did see those guidelines before I ordered, but didn’t think about the projection. So, the new one I ordered is 2” shorter and has a little less projection. Thanks!

I don't think prints really warrant picture lights unless they are something really important. Maybe original paintings. Which also don't have glass on them to "show" the light reflected off the images. Personally I would pass.

I went with a slightly smaller fixture. It’s a bit shorter and slimmer. I think in person it looks best with the prints. My hubby did point out, that probably no one is going to see it but me. LOL Thanks all!

This is what I like about picture lights…I am sitting in my dark house (watching something on my ipad) and this is the only light.

Unless you count the outsde icicle lights!

@Sueb20, nice view, perfect amount of light! My hallway had a little glow happening last night :)

@RNmomof2 zone 5, you were right about the first one looking too big. I’m much happier with the smaller/slimmer light. Thanks!

    Thanks all!

Love it! And to your comment about hubby saying you are the only one who will see it, I think I've discovered in my old age that I'm decorating for myself. If it matters to me that it looks good, that is enough. So I'm glad you will have this little bit of glow to make you happy everytime you see it.

As for the suggestion that art has to be important to deserve a light, I say balderdash. The light makes it important.

    Kitch4me thanked mtnrdredux_gw

I agree 100%, mtn. Those kind of rules are just silly. If the light enhances whatever it is it's shining on, it's good and worthwhile. And if it makes one happy, even better.
