Dog/child fb reel

I do look at fb reels sometimes especially of puppies and kitties, and I think they are cute.

A few weeks ago there was a reel of a small child (maybe 3 or 4) scolding a dog about barking mirroring the way a mom might scold the family dog for similar. There was no contact and the dog did not look perturbed, it just stood there and looked like it was tuning out the entire tirade.

All of a sudden (or was it all of a sudden, or did I bring it on myself my just clicking on that reel) there were a bunch of similar ones.

But today there was a reel of a small child that had grabbed a dog around the body and was scolding it. Of course the parent must have been present, someone was filming the reel. But I think it is an exceedingly bad idea to allow a child grabbing a dog its own size, with her face just inches from the dog's face, and scolding it.

I think that most family dogs are trustworthy and learn to put up with a certain amount of stuff from children, but I think it is bad for both the dog and the child for the parent to allow that kind of grabbing.

I think it is not fair to the dog. And the child might think it would be OK to do that to any dog, with possibly disastrous future consequences.

Am I overthinking this, or what do you think?

I have quite a scar under my chin from putting my face too close to a dog’s face when I was a kid. I was around six yrs old and mesmerized by my uncle’s Dalmatian who’d just had puppies in his barn. She was nursing and I leaned in to pet one … SNAP. She bit the heck out of me, and not only did I suffer that, but I got an angry chewing out by my uncle, too. :/

My late husband had a small scar on his face from … get this … a Dalmatian biting him when he was a kid! Same circumstances! That was one of our party tricks — showing our matching Dalmatian bites. :D

Anyway, I totally agree with you.

I agree with you. I cringe when I see babies and toddlers climbing over dogs or tugging on them, their faces are so exposed to a potential bite. I'm sure all the owners of dogs who have bitten a child had, at one time or another, felt complete confidence that their dog wouldn't harm their child.

Lucillle, take a good look at those videos, esp since you're seeing a bunch of them. There are some very convincing AI videos being circulated. Almost look real, but there is something off. Like you might notice that the gaze of the child or the animal is "off" -like they aren't really making eye contact. Your description reminded me of some I've seen.

I agree, too. Our wonderful mutt was loved by everyone. One day a six yo neighbor thought it would be funny to step on the dog’s tail. Poor dog yelped and jumped to her feet and with a canine tooth caught the child’s calf and scraped it. Fortunately the child’s mother and I saw the whole thing and the mom scolded her daughter for abusing the dog.

100% agree Lucille. Small children should never be left unsupervised with dogs.

Also agree with Oly that FB is overrun with AI garbage now. My feed has far too many patently false/made up posts and videos. I rarely open FB anymore because you can't trust anything there. Not that you ever could. But it is really bad now.

There is a way to sort your feed so that your friends' posts are almost all that is shown. It is buried in settings and you have to click it every time. Rarely is it worth it for me.
