Repurpose a Formal Dining Room

I am currently finishing a kitchen renovation project and will not longer need a formal dining room. I would love ideas on repurposing the dining room space.

The floor plan is open. The family room and dining room are split by the basement stairs.

What do you need more of in your home and life? Formal entry, coat storage, book storage, a place to read, a place to display items, more formal seating for cocktails if you entertain?

    Please post a floor plan.

@Kendrah, thank you for responding, asking that question, and providing examples. My home is on a ranch with an unfinished basement. The first level consists of three bedrooms, two baths, a family room, a kitchen with a w/dining area, and the formal dining room. We have a linen closet and coat closet (to the left of the front door) that are both sufficient.

Having a space that serves dual purposes would be nice. I would enjoy a space for reading, but also a space that could serve as additional (intimate) seating when entertaining.

Have you thought of changing the railing and handrail system around the staircase? Perhaps wire, or a tempered glass or acrylic that you would “see through”.
As the balusters have been removed, it looks so dangerous for children or pets.
Hard to tell how much space is around it for furniture placement etc.

@AC M, thank you for your response. The balusters were removed as part of the hardwood refinishing, which was completed on Friday, and will be replaced (along with the railing). However, I love the idea of tempered or acrylic glass. Thanks!

No children or pets are in the home, so no imminent danger as the renovation continues.

@Kendrah roughly 144 sqft. I have seen many circle-chair layout pictures on Houzz. I haven't ruled it out, but I'm not entirely sold on that style. Thanks!

@Design Fan (NE z7a) - here is a rough floor plan, not to scale, that gives an idea of the space. The bedrooms are on one side, the living space is in the middle along with the basement stairs, and the kitchen/breakfast dining is on the opposite side of the bedrooms.

Those staicase posts have to come out. Should have been pulled before the floor got finished.

I'd consider a multipurpose dining room study space
