Frigidaire Gallery GRQ2255BF 4 door Freezer Temp fluctuations

last month

My battle with new fridge and freezer temp fluctuations continues. This is the quad door model with two freezer sections on the bottom (One is convertible, but that is not really relevant here).

I have been monitoring the temp in the freezer with the Govee system, which sends data back to my phone app. Even though I have the freezer set to -2, the temp in the freezer still fluctuates between -3F and 9F, with 2-3 dramatic spikes throughout the day. Even when doors are kept closed. I know about the defrost cycles, but when the spikes occur, it takes several hours (like sometimes 6) for the temp to get back down to something acceptable, like between 0 and 2.

So, the graph in the Govee app looks more like an EKG instead of anything close to being flat. The temp is always moving up or down even with door closed. Here is the most interesting piece of data. I downloaded all Govee recordings for the past 3 weeks taken at every 15 min interval and put that in excel. Rather than look at highs, lows, averages, I did this:

49% of the time the temp in the freezer was <= 0F (in other words, 51% of the time is was above 0F even when set to -2F)

65% of the time the temp in the freezer was <= 2F

80% of the time the temp in the freezer was <= 3F

only 11% of the time the temp in the freezer was <= -2F (the setpoint)

95% of the time is stayed at or below 7F.

I know some may look at this and say "well 7F is pretty good". but 0F is suppose to be recommended and 7F is a bit away from -2F.

I don't want to get a replacement if this is all just be design and it will not change anything. This unit has a dual evap system and I read all this crap about keeping temperatures consistent. I also read a review about this fridge on reviewed.com and they raved about consistent temps at the setpoint. That is crap because I have the data that shows otherwise.

Also, I monitor a bottle of glycol with a Govee probe. It fluctuates too, but not as much, and never reaches 0F consistently.

Thoughts!

Well I might experiment with a -5 degree trial and then on down to -10 to find an acceptable average temp. I presume it is the defrost cycle which throws a wrench in the works-the reason manual defrost freezers are betterr for long term storage.

So the defrost cycle kicks in and it keeps the temperature above +5F for 5 hours or more?

I'd call and ask to speak with Tech Support to get info on the design specs. You may find it is out of spec. You can return it within the time window.

Tried that Frigidaire does not have technical support. Only Cust Sevice that reads standard stuff to you like don’t leave the door open and is it higher than 80 degrees in your house. Someone at Electroluk knows if this is normal or not. What will the design specs tell me?

Every article I consulted stated that the freezer temperature should not measure the air temperature. Wolf recommends immersing the temperature probe in cooking oil while GE recommends placing it between two packages of food. I would conclude that you should not use the air measurements.

See my original post i did the probe test in a glycol solution still fluctuated

I saw that. But you can't expect the temperature to remain constant and you didn't provide any glycol data.. Your conclusion that the refrigerator wasn't operating properly was based on the air data.

The temp of the glycol solution did not remain steady either. It rose and fell within one degree of the air temperature changes. I just had a new unit delivered and it does the same thing. You can’t expect the glycol not to increase when the air temp goes above 7F and wants to stay there for several hours. I am convinced the compressor is not running long enough due to some set yhreshold to save energy

I bought the GRQ2255BF because of this review.

Again, I don't think it is "malfunctioning" because this is my second one. I think it is by design, but it sounds like a pretty irresponsible design on the part of the engineers if they let the fridge stay above the set point by several degrees over half the time. In other words, 0F does not mean an average of 0F, even for the glycol solution. It means more like an average of 3F. Turning it down further does not change things either.

Also, Fridge is nice and consistent. Freezer is not.

Interesting. Reviewed's results for this refrigerator are consistent with CR's Thermostat Performance ratings of "Excellent" for Frigidaire refrigerators.

So this is my second unit for this model. Costco replaced it last week. See the attached. This does not seem like any think close to consistency. Notice how it stayed well above 10F for several hours .Why did it do this all the sudden after being installed a week ago

Hard time believing I got two faulty units in a row a couple of months apart. Average temp over the past 4 to 5 hours is above 10F. Its like it shutdown for 5 hours

Help! First read my last post from 6 hours ago. This is an update and tge situation is worse. Much worse than my first unit. The temp in the freeezer has now risen to over 20F. See attached. It stayed at these high temps all night. This to me is now not a by design thing but a failure. No visible ice and nothing blocking anything.

I unplugged this thing for 10 min then started it up again at -2F. it has done a good job over the past 48 hrs with no significant spikes over 5F. So what gives? why the spike a couple of days ago to over 20F for more than 12 hours???? I like the quality feel of this unit, but this freezer temp has me concerned

I have the exact same model (grqc2255bf) and I have been fighting this issue for a year now. I am currently on my 3rd compressor (warranty fix). The service was completed yesterday, and within an hour or so the freezer section was down to almost 0 F. Four hours later, the freezer was at 50 F and stayed at that temperature for 6-7 hours. This morning it was back to around 0 F and has not coded a H1 alarm yet today. I am so frustrated with this refrigerator and I have not been able to use the freezer section since August with wild fluctuations into the 40/50 F range - ugh.
