For Heidi Callier fans…AD tour

last month

Heidi Callier (I am a huge fan and I know some of you are too) designed Kendall Jenner’s mountain vacation house. The only thing I really don’t like is that giant marshmallow floral-print sofa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmMG_56bEFQ

Our main guest room at our beach cottage is in need of a little makeover, and I think I am going to start by spray painting the metal headboard red! Every time I see a red bed, my eyes do this 😍.

I saw the article this morning and really liked most of the decor. Thanks for sharing the video.

Heidi sold her own house this past summer:

It’s interesting seeing these rooms in brighter lighting.

Yes on a red metal bed!

Thanks for posting this! What a great excuse for a work break.

I'm smitten with Heidi, and there were certainly some pieces to love in Kendall's home - the plaid wood arm chairs in the living room, that lemon vase, the bunk nooks, wood paneling in the bathrooms.

But as a whole, it was one of the more disconnected and least inspiring homes I've seen from Heidi. The design felt really divorced from the architecture in ways that didn't make sense. The kitchen felt so off - the skylights, the stone fireplace. They felt so out of place, like more could have been done to make them feel right at home.

@Jilly - I loved seeing Heidi's home listing. Can you imagine moving into her house? You need not do a thing.

I saw this earlier and resisted because... um... it's a Kardashian. But, oh, wow... pleasantly surprised. She's well-spoken and seems to genuinely enjoy the house. Not a fan of the sofa, either, and a few of the other details. But she seems delightful. And the airstream is a sweet spot!

Thanks for sharing the link to Heidi's house, too, Jilly. Overall, I like her style, but I don't care for the monochrome exterior. The house loses its charm when the details aren't highlighted. It just looks like a blue blob. And, except in few cases, I'm not a fan of trim paint matching the walls (non-white colors). But I appreciate her eye for pattern. And, yes, she totally copied your kitchen, Sue!

I can’t believe she copied my kitchen!

I thought she had copied mine in our last house! LOL

I am with Kendrah on this one.

  • last month

It sound like Kendall had a LOT of input, so anything I didn’t love, I blamed on her.

  • last month

I was agreeing with Kendrah on Heidi's house. I haven't looked at Kendall's yet.

  • last month

Kendrah, I’ll arm wrestle you for the vase.

I thought I had seen the same vase at Anthro but I might have gotten it confused with this tomato vase, which I also want.

Or maybe I’d seen this fig vase, also from Anthro, which I don’t want.

  • last month

Congrats @Sueb20, you've won the vase. I have terrible arm strength.

I agree, everything underwhelming about the house is Kendall's fault.

Did anyone else cringe when she patted herself on the back for selecting her own coffee table books?

  • last month

Kendrah, yes, but she's young and just discovering her style. Frankly, I'm impressed she does the hunting herself and seems to support local shops. The fact that she knew about individual pieces, and had friends who gifted her items, etc., was surprising to me. I would have expected her to snap her fingers and have this stuff done for her, and not be able to explain the stories/decisions behind them. I guess my bar for her was really low.

  • last month

Kendrah, yes! ”I went to an actual store and actually picked them out myself!” Like, what a concept. But as Feathers points out, good that she’s shopping local.

IMO, Kendall is more like her Dad...not like the rest of the Klan. More athletic, down to earth etc. I've always liked her. I saw another house of hers, maybe last year(?)-at Christmas time-that I really liked a lot. She's just more "homey" than the other K's. But...OTOH...not a fan of the fabric on that huge couch and think it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Clearly she had help but I think many of her choices are surprisingly mature for a 30 year old who wasn't raised in a home with restrained taste.

I've been noticing those sofas with traditional-ish arms and backs but with the more modern one piece combination seat cushion and front. Not a fan.

  • last month

I think her sofa looks wonderfully comfortable. And it is fun to see in a grandma fabric. It seems very kid like, as though built to sit on in footie PJ's.

I too have been keen to sleep in my guest rooms. Everyone should do so in order to know what their guests will experience and fine tune the needs of the room. We often sleep in a guest room when one of us is sick. It feels like going on vacation in our own home.

There are so few beautiful architectural features of this home. That is part of what makes it very different from so many of Heidi's other projects. I wonder how Heidi felt about the end results. The placement of the dining table in relation to the kitchen makes little sense.

  • last month

I agree with her, the bathrooms are great. I think the K finishes are disjointed, and not in a quirky interesting way. The floor vibe is not working with the marble b/s IMHO.

I find it odd to take pride in selecting books, without any mention of what they are about or whether one reads them. I just chose 2 such books to raise up a coral piece in my bookcase wall ... chosen for color and price. I consider that a "fail "born of impatience, not an achievement.

Enormous sofas are fun, even though they never look quite right IMHO. I don't care for the fabric. I don't get a chintz vibe, I get a water-colory vibe that reads 80s wicker seat cushions.

The dining table banquette situation is fun, but I think she will need to have one of these around when guests in the middle need to get out to go pee.

  • last month

Yes, she did have pee awareness about getting down from the top bunk but not in the crane extraction from the dining table. Ah, youth. How nice to not have to concern yourself with things like this.

Checked out Heidi's portfolio. Haven't looked at it in a while. Oh, this Hamptons house. Perfection. https://heidicaillierdesign.com/portfolio/east-hampton/

The youngsters can just climb under or over the table. Not me, I’d break a hip.

  • last month

Looked more closely at the sofa. Still not a fan of the shape and the proportions.

  • last month

It’s like a marshmallow covered in fabric.

  • last month

Hate Kylie's floral sectional. Grandma decor is gross. It was interesting to look at from the point of view, " If you could afford ANY designer, THIS is what you'd choose". View point. The size of the rooms was pretty cool. Working under skylights gets really HOT. I had them in my 1st house. I put roller shades in the skylights and they turned yellow and had to be replaced after 5 years under the intense heat.

  • last month

But a surprisingly firm looking marshmallow.

Here's another wonky sofa she's created. I think there is a market for people who want these modern pieces but like the granny upholstery.

I had a banquette in my breakfast room and my kids always complained about being stuck. No one likes a middle seat!

I love how when they do it, it's right. What would you all say if I mixed these patterns?

I love how when they do it, it's right, part 2. What would you all say if I suggested this sofa for this space?

This, I adore. Interesting it is tiled only on one side. Her BA have a signature style I think we will see copied

This pink! This built in! Sorry, wrong tile again. A little rusticity would be fine but this it also too busy. Seems to be her thing; rustic floors (see K complaint)

PS How many intern-hours did it take to get just this right level of window blind insouciance?

  • last month

    Grandma decor is gross.

    What?

And ... Whether or not skylight are hot or need shades depends on many factors.

  • last month

I put roller shades in the skylights and they turned yellow and had to be replaced after 5 years under the intense heat.

Kendall will not own this home in 5 years. Famous people usually do AD tours because they want to put their home on the market and the extra exposure bumps up the price.

What would you all say if I mixed these patterns?

I'd say you were pretty brilliant and could charge a lot of money!

I concur the sofa at the foot of that bed is too tight of a squeeze, a tripping hazard, and the room would look much better without it.

Liar liar pants on fire! 🤣

I dont think so. I think people would say:

    1. the patterns are too similar in scale

    2. the patterns are too similar in form

    3. the colors do not relate

    You would tell me to

    1 vary the scale

2 mix floral or curvilinear with stripes or plaid or something else

    ete etc

3 pull the green from the wallpaper

When a professional does the "wrong thing," they are creative.

  • last month

I'd say sometimes it is right and sometimes it is not.
Is this the best of Heidi's work? No, she's done much more brilliant color and print mixing. She isn't a home run every time.

But, if you have to over think it that much, then you don't have the touch. People who are good at eclectic prints and colors just have that skill and don't have to think about it that much. I have some such friends and it is great to see how little thought they put into making magic out of seemingly random combinations.

I wonder if she was bored working on Kendall's home.

Agree. I always notice how fast artists are!

Other than the bedroom with the red bed and its bathroom, I didn’t like much else. The primary bathroom shower would be a no-go for me. Just looking at the pics of it made me a bit dizzy. I didn't like the kitchen done in the same colorway either. That sofa is awful, but I can see where it would be fun for lounging for a bunch of young people.

I do think KJ is a well-spoken young woman who seems to understand design concepts and enjoys the process. I have long thought that she seems like a different type of person than her Kardashian half-sisters, but who knows what they are actually like IRL.

BTW in this review, I saw this rendition by the same designer of a skirted PR sink --- much better!

  • last month

I don't love a skirted sink, but I love that fabric and wallpaper combo. Does this mirror look high to you? The mirror in Kendall's all wood bathroom did too. I wonder if these are bathrooms designed for tall individuals.

  • last month

    you are right; very high!

The more of her work I see, the less interesting I find it. Her rooms seem to follow a very predictable recipe of quirkiness.

I do like the monotone exterior of her own house ( but I would have done something a bit different on the door).

The paint color in her exercise room would make me want to flee before completing the full sequence of reps.

I dislike a lot of the ceiling light fixtures that are intended to stand out.
