what size console in small loft space?

last month

Hi All!
I have a four story townhome and need to furnish a loft space/seating area between some bedrooms.

First floor - garage, small office, full bed and bath
2nd floor - living, dining and kitchen
3rd floor - primary, laundry, two additional bedrooms, guest bath and “loft” space that I’d like to furnish

The wall where the unit would go is 7’5”, or 89”. There are two sizes of consoles, 72” and 84”

72” would leave about 8” on either side, 84” would leave 2.5” (looking more built in and intentional?)

This will be somewhat of a seating area with two accent/lounge chairs and small ottoman. Books etc.

Thoughts? Here are pics for reference. Thanks!

Is the back wall longer than the side wall? My first thought was that your console should go on that wall. If you put it on your intended wall, if you can have seating against the back wall (like the back of the chair facing the back wall), that could work. But I would not like to have seating backed up to or against the railing wall. I think that gives people an uneasy feeling, not a cozy, read a book vibe.

Depending on what you have planned for seating and other pieces, if the console was against the back wall, you would still have room for a chair or two in front of it (but that would mean one chair would have its back to the railing.

Whatever you decide, I think since the space is so small that the smaller scale console would be better...or think of a taller narrower storage piece that will give you more floor space for other furniture.

How big is the space ?You have walkspace that should not be included in the available space . Waht purpose will a console table server / ImMO you have room maybe for 2 chairs and a table and lamp between the chairs so not much space left and if this is for reading then mayb a small bookcase in the corner . I need to understand the need for a consolle at all

What are the measurements for the chairs and ottoman?

Two chairs, an ottoman and a console are a lot of furniture for a small seating area.

Consider placing each chair with its back against a solid wall + a small end table and floor lamp between them + an ottoman. Then see if you still have room for a narrow console along the railing. You may find it too crowded with a console.

    Congrats on your new home.

Unfortunately, the word "loft" as it applies to this space is a generous marketing term. It is more like left over space at the top of the stairs resulted from poor room layout.

Two lounge chairs, an ottoman, and console will not fit well in this space. It is going to be visually cluttered with bad circulation, and each piece practically touching a wall, if it fits at all.

Use blue masking tape (with light pressure) to mark off on the floors all the furniture you intend for this small area, or bring in pieces from other rooms. You'll see how squished it is.

Instead, make a contemporary version of library like this with a bookcase along the wall that is parallel to the hallway. Place a rug in front.

You can still use pieces from the RH Enzo collection.

I have a few questions. Do you need storage? Is there an activity in the house that needs space (crafting, reading, sewing, exercising, working, storing odds and ends, ect)? I think it would be tight to have both a seating area and a console. Would people sit up there or would it just end up being a display area? For me personally I'd set up a sewing area if another bedroom wasn't available for that purpose. If you don't need storage I could see a comfy sofa in the space so people could sit separate from the rest of the family.

Thanks so far everyone! The home is simply a vacation home. Actual measurements, not including the hallway, is 7’10” x 7’5”. The longer wall is the back wall perpendicular to the stairs. It’ll service basically as a place to sit and read a book, and perhaps a tv on the short wall. The model unit has a tv and console along the short wall with two small chairs along the stair rail. The two guest rooms down the hall do not yet have tv’s. I’m thinking maybe this area could serve as a tv space in case someone wants to watch something different from the main living room?

Will you be renting it out? I could see a sofabed along the back wall and maybe an art tv opposite hung on the wall.

Not renting it out. Just for personal use

Basically wanting a space to sit and have it look pretty lol

I also don't see space for a console without making the space overcrowded feeling. Art on the wall could help.

I like the idea that teens or guests could hang there a bit, so a couple of arm chairs with reading lamps seems good to me. Could see a TV with a gaming setup. But lisedv's mockup gives you a good idea how small it really is. They probably think you might put an office there, or a coffee station...

A solid wood sideboard in walnut tone is a great choice.
