Crocheted snowflake ornament

last month
last modified: last month

Wanted to send something to my friend...this worked out perfectly as it fit in the xmas card. I had to play around first to get the right thread and the right pattern. The top 2 are the same only using different thread and hook size. The bottom one is the one I sent. That pattern worked out much better for me. It doesn't show in the photo, but it was made with some metallic thread through it so it has a bit of a spark.

So cute! My DD crocheted similar snowflake earrings for me a few years ago! I have to remember to wear them when she’s home for Christmas.

I had a number of those purchased decades ago at a church christmas bazaar. They had been stiffened with liquid starch so the points wouldn’t droop. Yours are beautiful, Annie! They’ll look so pretty on her tree.

Those are so pretty. I have some my friend’s mom crocheted for me iver 50 years ago!

i recently saw some that were crocheted around small balloon globes about the size of golf balls, then stiffened with something (starch, mod podge, shellac???) before the balloon was popped and removed, leaving perfect little snowflake balls.

I’m sure your friends are going to love these.

Your snowflakes are lovely! I, too, have some from years ago packed away (I haven't put up a tree in over a decade). Mine were also stiffened with starch and were just beautiful on the tree. Your friend will cherish the thoughts and effort of your gift.

Beautiful, Annie. My late MIL crocheted so many of them, she also made angels which were three dimensional, not flat. We kept all of the snowflakes - we might have about 50 of them. I recall her saying she stiffened them with sugar water but I'm not sure. Some of them have become floppy over the years depending on their design.

I wanted to stiffen them with liquid starch but didn't find any. So I soaked them with spray starch and let them dry. They seem pretty stiff now. Sugar and water is another way of making a starch.

My grandmother used to make these ... they are lovely and thanks for sparking the sweet memory!

Very pretty and a great choice, Annie. I have a lot of the antimacassars crocheted by my great-grandmother and grandmother. I have a couple of them in our ’old’ bedroom, which has some vintage furniture, old pieces of silver and such.

I have several that my mom made 40+ years ago and we still put a few of them on the tree

Remember, as you make more, that no two can look alike!.

My MIL told me that she experimented and found epsom salts to be a good stiffener.

    Very pretty, Annie.

Annie - what a thoughtful gift and especially meaningful since you made it. I too purchased some many years ago and still enjoy having them on my tree. I have a bag of crocheted doilies, along with a tablecloth and a bedspread that my Nana made and have no real use for but I store them in a dresser. Well I'm not sure if they're crocheted or tatted.

I had one of her more delicate doilies framed as a gift for my Mom and now it hangs in the guest room.

I don't seem to have a picture of my mom's crocheted snowflakes. I think she actually used a thin cotton string vs yarn. Hers were very delicate. Beautiful memories!

Nicole, this is not tatting, but crochet. Tatting is a different craft.

I thought I had lost these. I was cleaning out the storage container where I keep gift bags, tissue paper, tags, etc for Christmas wrapping and found them on the bottom. A good friend made these one year and gave them to another friend and me.

those are really pretty, too, Outside.

This popped up for me when I was searching for the crocheted hollow globes I mentioned....if I could crochet, I think my tree would look like this:
