Wall color with wallpaper

last month
last modified: last month

Hi

updating our master bedroom and considering if I will add wallpaper behind on the wall behind our bed. If I do, I saw and likes these 2 wallpapers. Quesrion is , would it be odd to painr the remaining walls a very soft shade or blue or green since rhe wallpapers don’t have much color ? I know most would say to choose a color from the paper to coordinate with the paint, but I don’t think I want to paint the walls beige or white. I have a beige-is wall now and I dont like the way it looks with the wood color. I have purchased a new bed, and trying to work with remaining furniture. Not ideal , but I dont have the budget to her new furniture. here is room, new bed coming, wallpapers I like and type of wall colors I am deciding. monitor screen scew colors, but those are examples of soft blue and soft green. I feel like screens turn mited colors gray .

the first wallpaper is my favorite. I think its so pretty and elegant. The second is pretty too. disregard bedding. It is being changed. Using current linens temporarily due to a pippy that eats everything

soft blue maybe for walls?

Soft green maybe for walls?

Changing chandelier to this

Why not finadwallpaper with a bit of color in it those choices to me are boring a little color never hurt . Since the new bed is white why not think about some new bedding first then see if you need wallpaper .

I tend to like softer, muted colors as opposed to bold. I also plan on white/ ivory besding as a base with colored accent pillows/ throw. i like the ability to change up accessories if I tire of a color or pattern, as opposed to gerting all new bedding. I keep major pieces in my home neutral with touches kf soft muted color throughout

Get the bed in the room first to see what the white upholstery actually looks like.

I've bought stuff that looked and was described as white on the website, but when it arrived it was very yellow. Some wood twin headboards I recently bought for a guest bedroom looked off-white in photos, but they are stark white. Not a problem as I can paint them to better match the off-white background of the fabric I used for pillows and drapes, but it would be a problem if they were upholstered.

You can keep this all in one thread. There are now at least three threads for this same room.

Yes chispa, whites are never truly white; everything has an undertone. That is why i will do either white or i ory bedding ( depending on the bed color ). I am not getting that now, I am just trying to get some wallpaper / paint samples in order to see what direction i may go in. If its a big no-no to paint walls a color not in wallpaper , then i will rethink my options. No sense in getting blue/ green paint samples if I shouldn't be pairing those colors with a neutral wallpaper without those colors actually in them

i saw one person who purchased one of the papers used a dark green half wall. I dont think it looks odd. But perhaps I am wrong .

sorry WestCoast hopeful. other questions about if I should paint the furniture or not and which bed have been addressed. I thought it was helpful to move on from those questions separately; as opposed to getting more input about things that have been decided on already.

    I didn’t realize I shouldn't start a new thread

Suggest waiting until headboard is in place and wallpaper/bedding are complete. You’ll have a much better sense of a ”color family” you prefer/what will suit and head to paint store for lots of paint chips.

Thanks maureen . that is a nice mock up of colors and inspiration photo. i think it looks nice with the green, Would this wallpaper also look nice with a pale blue?

i would ideally like to choose paint / wallpaper before we assemble the entire bed, as jt will be easier to paint: wallpaper without the bed in the room. I will be using the headboard to play around with to how it looks with samples, but hoping to choose wall color and wallpaper ( or no wallpaper ) before setting up the bed.

my question really is , if I used one of these wallpaper , or any neutral wallpaper, can I paint the remaining walls a color or does that look odd?

  • last month

I think the wall colour should absolutely tie in with any wallpaper you choose. It does not look cohesive without it.

Will work, but accessory choices will be key in the flow.

If you are leaning towards blue, maybe consider a paper that is more complementary. Get the wallpaper and then color match the paint.

thanks maureem! yes! both of those examples are the tone of colors i like and that go with the rest of my home. i saw That blue wallpaper as well, but I am just concerned it will be too bright/ baby blue and then the wals would be way too saturated blue. Same issue with any green wallaper. I dont have the samples yet, so I will see how it looks in person. But that is one I am considering as well.

thank you wendy h. That is what I am worried about. I would paint the walls an off white/ beige to go with the wallpaper, but I am thinking the furniture may not look good with its wood color(?) too much beige / brown . i can try though!

  • last month

The soft blue will look fine with your first wallpaper sample. For the second sample I'd color match a paint to the background.

I think it is a mistake to not build the bed first and see the scale of everything in your room and how the scale of the wallpaper feels with the bed.

Oh wow.. thank you BeverlyFLADeziner. So kind of you to mock that one up. I think the wallpaper looks pretty. Not so much rhe wall color .

I put that one and the orher neutral I posted as my top 2, as I was thinking perhaps any color walls could work ( or perhaps not?) i see the example has a dark beige . I really don’t want beige walls. have them now and it looks dead due to the wood color. Just too much beige/ tan currently.

I think this is amistake to do wallpaer befroe the bed is in or the bedding chosen those items drive all the rest . I still think those are lacoking a bit of color . A very soft green mixed with white and cream in wallpapwer would be lovely IMO but not until the bed and bedding are chosen

  • last month

Yes, they are neutral , however if the walls would be painted a color ( soft blue or soft green) the room would not be lacking color.

However, if the rule of thumb is that you should have a color on the walls that is in the color of the wallpaper , then the walls would be neutral beige and yes, lack color. It would be monocromatic which isnt a bad thing. I think monocromatic looks elegant. It is just not the look I am going for at the moment. The room has been monochromatic for years and I am looking for a change

The bed will be here on Friday ; so I will have the headboard which is the largest piece to view in the room to help choose colors. I just thought it would be easier to actually paint without the bed actually in the room. Move the headboard out once colors chosen snd then assemble it once we are done painting. Just my thought , but I guess I am wrong. Going to be a pain to have to wrap it all up to protect it , as it is upholstery, maneuver around it etc. The wood, we could just wipe off any splatters; not so much the bed. oh well…. guess the bed is recommended to be in. Will do

Take the mockup Beverly did of your bedroom and load it into a Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore color visualizer and play with colors on the wall. Personally I think that soft green you selected with the first wallpaper will look great but I'm no color expert.

Another thing you can do is schedule an online consult with a Sherwin Williams color expert. You forward samples of things in the room such as the wall paper ahead of time and the consultant will look up complimentary colors. I did it once to match a rug. The consultant was super helpful with suggestions and color advice. https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-tools/color-services

Thanks tozzmo1 i appreciate thst suggestion. I didnt know they offered that service. Good to know abbot it!

I dont physically have the paper here, but my thought was the first one appears neutral ( white with light beige or gray petal outlines - i cant tell online )

I dont see how a green or blue ( or any color really) would not look right. Again; perhaps I am wrong though 🤷‍♀️

I ger the concept of if a wallpaper is blue and yellow for example, I wouldn’t paint the walls green. I would do a blue or yellow shade. I will sample it out. Maybe it does look really off if you use a color other than what is in the wallpaper. i can only try . Or just forgoe it and just paint

It is much easier, and usually cheaper, to change bedding than wallpaper. If you have bedding you adore, you can certainly plan the rest of your room around that, but it’s hardly the only way to do it, and not necessarily the best.

People usually add wallpaper on the bed wall of a bedroom to call attention to that particular wall. Using the papers you are considering and then painting the other walls a blue or green might not do that and might actually call attention to the other walls instead. It's a bit hard to say since the colors you are using are rather pale. It could be that the whole room may just appear washed out with this scheme.

You are attempting a whole new look on a very restricted budget

You need to lose the bed and its space hogging head and foot board.

Your bed side tables feel heavy and bulky, will not feel better against any new bed

You need to retain the dresser and the armoire in a room cut up by doors

The LAST thing you need is wallpaper, any color. !!

You need a neutral upholstered headboard or the complete upholstered bed.

You need the palest misty soft green on the walls, as BLUE, any blue is going to turn your furniture to yellow cast.

Start there. No to any and all the papers above, let alone on a single wall.

Draw and measure the space, Show all the windows, the solid walls, show all the passages, to bath, hall, or closet. Each and every one has a dimension! Upload it as bold drawing with those dimensions.

Is the bed a queen or a king?

What IS the budget? Don't add more threads to this room......

Jan Moyer, the bed is gone. The new bed is the one pictured below. Queen size.

Yes, the end tables are bulky and heavy, I know what I am working with and I do not expect a miracle of them appearing smaller. Just trying to improve what I have to make it nicer, despite not having much to invest in it as my budget is $1,000 all in. not much I can do about bathroom and closet doors. (?)

Your opinion is clear; you don’t recommend wallpaper. I didn’t think it was such a horrific idea, but I understand opinions differ. Not sure why I would have to show drawings of the room; there isn’t much I can do; as I can only move the case pieces 1 or 2 ways. The bed/ night stands must stay where they are due to their size. and room dimensions

Polite suggestions are more appreciated . Thank you

Something was not sitting right with me yesterday about your wall colors and how they would contrast with your furniture. My fear was they would make your wood furniture pop a little more - which is exactly what you do not want. But I think Jan nailed it with her yellow cast comment.

The paint colors you are suggesting look super lovely as an independent idea, but context and contrast is everything. Get Samplize swatches of them and see what they do to your furniture.

(Her questions are understandable and why others have suggested not starting many different posts about the same room.)

I'd prefer to see a soft white on all of your walls - try something with a slight red undertone like Farrow and Ball dimnity, and bedding in the lovely shade of blue or green you have gravitated towards. A neutral with a yellow undertone will not be good with your furniture.

I'm not loving your wallpaper idea, but accent walls make my skin crawl, so I fully admit my bias. ;)

Thanks kendrah. you are always very helpful and kind in your responses .

i hear you about the wall colors concern. I thought about an off white, but undertones are tricky with whites.. I will play around with some and see.

i looked at the farrow and ball demnity and the color is very similar to what i currently have ; (baby fawn BM ) which I dont think is doing the furniture any favor. The end tables have Crema Marfil marble; which is a taupey color The room just feels so brown. I feel like I need to go lighter on the walls, but need to figure out the right color/ tone of whatever color that may be.

Yes, i always do samples- either with samplize or the painted swatch boards with sample jars .

Once the bed is in place it would be wise to post a photo of your top paints and wallpapers with both the bed and the cream Marfil tops - those 2 elements drive the rest of the decisions.

you know….. I just realized…. one of my family rooms has built in storage cabinets that are a similar wood color to my furniture ( not exact, but close to it). My family room was painted Titanium at one point ( a very pale green/ gray) and currently gray cashmere( a little darker than titanium) but also a light green- blue/ gray. I don’t think it makes the wood look yellow.. I think it looks nice. Granted different space/ lighting etc, but I am back to thinking a soft green / blue green is not going to look bad. of course, Inwill try all options, but I just remembered this room is similar in wood color/ wall color family that are being considered. I would go lighter than gray cashmere, but its a similar look to how I think it may look. It is looking darker in the pics, in person its a lighter color

Thank you for your kind words too!

The wood in your family room built in looks very yellow to me, but pictures can be deceiving from one room to the next. I love titanium wow, it is such a chameleon.

I get that you are tired of your wall color, but I still want to push you on it. Baby Fawn has a pretty low LVR. I think a red based neutral with a brighter LVR could be great - maybe opulence or maritime.

  • last month

Opulance has a pink undertone and martine white is very yellow . i like pink and have touches of blush pink in my home, but I am not so sure it would look good with this furniture wood.

I understand what has been said about how the wood may look against certain colors; and blues or greens may bring out the wood even more, but the bottom line is- the wood isnt going anywhere; its big, its bulky , theres a lot if it, and no matter what, its going to be there. No color paint is going to transform or hide it 😂 I am just thinking I can‘t fight it, I might as well just choose colors that go well with it, even if it is enhancing it .

  • last month

I can't advise you on complementary or otherwise flattering colors to go with your wallpaper choice, but I thought you might like some reassurance that not everyone hates accent walls, and not everyone hates wallpaper. I love wallpaper enough to be a little sorry that you're not considering it for all your walls, but that would certainly add to the cost and might well not be worth it even if you liked the idea. And anyway, it's your bedroom, not mine.

Thank you amystoller. I do like wallpaper; but I understand not everyone does; and thats okay. I feel It can really enhance a space for the better. But yes, due to cost i cannot do the whole room. I have touches of wallpaper in my house. I have a half wall in the dining room wallpapered and my entry ceiling!! I got a lot of push back on here about my ceiling when I was considering it, but I have to say, I am glad I stuck with my gut and went for it because it turned out beautiful! My installer shows pics to clients and they alll have been asking to do it as well.

    here are pics

thank you very much. This bedroom is a thorn in my side. I hate what I have to work with, and I know that no

matter what I do to try and improve it, it will look somewhat nicer, but I know it will never be really beautiful. Ah….it is what it is 🤷‍♀️ all I can do is try. New chandelier came and it looks pretty out of the box, so thats good! I am hopeful about it. Bigger, simpler and more lighting ( 6 bulbs instead of 3 )

the wallapper colors don’t photograph well, but first is a light green/ gray.

    second is an ivory

    healing aloe

    titanium

Are you going to put a rug in the room? If so, choose that first. Wall coverings and paint should be the last thing except for maybe accent pillows.

I'm a believer that every room should have a good size piece of wall art that is a focal point. In your room, I suggest a large piece to go over the dresser, where you previously had the mirror. The colours in that art will influence your choices of wall colour, and rug or wallpaper if you use them.

  • last month
    last modified: last month

Thank you partim . yes, i am putting a rug. Yes, over the dresser I am doing either a simple silver framed wall mirror or art. Not sure yet. Trying to decide if I should do a mirror over dresser, or over nightstands, or on wall between the chairs if I move the chairs to the wall where the dresser is …not sure yet have to play around

Just trying to figure out which color way I am to go in with this wood color. I feel like I can find a rug no matter which color I choose, as the colors I am deciding between are all pretty neutral ( ivory, tauoe taupe, light green, light blue) . I have seen a few that could work .

we are going to be able to refinish rhe floors!!!😊 SO happy about this. Our flooring guy was able to do it at a very reasonable cost. I think this orange floor isnt helping the situation, so I am thrilled!!! He starts tomorrow. Last minute job , but he has an opening tomorrow or he couldn't start until the new year, so we took it.

Didn’t think I would be refinishing our floors tomorrow ,( or at all for that matter!) but it is what it is!

Do you do your own wallpapering? I would never attempt a ceiling but walls are pretty easy unless you are using a specialty paper. I'm in the process of papering my bedroom with a faux grass cloth. I absolutely love it! Doing it yourself saves a lot so if you do DIY, you could do the entire room for under 1K.

Check out Benjamin’s Moore Pink Damask. It has the red undertones that Kendrah was advocating for and is a very subtle beautiful warm white
