There is no affordable dishwasher, IMO and regardless of price, it seems that all were built to fail. If by chance, there is a replacement part, the cost doesn't justify the repair.

Agree with @darbuka - We’ve always had Bosch’s and they’ve not been disappointed - our current one was installed 15 yrs ago and still going strong

I am also on the Bosch train. Very quiet, dishes are dry (unless flipped over). We had one in our previous house, and I am not sure quite how long, maybe about 10-12 years. There was no question that is what we bought for our new home as well. It stinks to lose a dishwasher this time of year-all the cooking, and the spending. Good luck-fingers crossed they can fix it.

Bosch is an affordable dishwasher because it never needs service, lasts forever, and comes in many different models with varying prices ranges. It's all I ever buy.

I like Miele. We have a top of the line one, but don't really use all the bells and whistles, as we always wash on the regular cycle. The one feature I do like is the automatic open-to-dry. Ten minutes before the cycle ends, it cracks opens the door which allows the steam to escape and the heat of the interior then dries everything inside. We had Other Miele DWs in previous houses and we were also happy with them.

My parents just had their oven break, 5 years old. The tech is supposed to come back Tuesday with the part.

The G5000 series non top of the line Miele is around $1k. That's the Miele version we chose as recommended by the Miele service tech in our area.

Agree with darbuka. Love my Bosch. Have an open floor plan so went with the quietest. Silence plus 44 dBA
There is a light at the bottom that lets you know it’s running, it’s that quiet. Dishes so clean! Filters are a non issue.

Oh, and is about 10 years old. Going strong. I have a theory that appliances are made to last about 10 years…so fingers crossed for all of mine! lol

Kitchenaid told us 5-7 years which is insane.

I ahve always loved Bosch my house I just sold has a Bosch in it 18 yrs old and I ran a catering biz with that DW sometimes 6-8 loads a day. So IMO Bosch I love the quick wash cycle but not sure if that is an option anymore My new house with a LG seems to get the dishes really clean , not as quiet as the Bosch and no quick wash but now no more catering so I will wait and see how it lasts

I'm camp Miele. Like Chispa said the door open automatically to let the steam out and I love that it has a pull out tray at the top to put the cutlery flat, no more fishing the cutlery out of the bottom of the dishwasher or standing it up in a box container in the dishwasher. My second choice is Siemens.

Bosch. Whatever you get, make sure the interior is stainless steel, not plastic.

Our Siemens is almost 20 years old. Nothing fancy, but it's never needed repair.

Having the top cutlery tray is a great feature. I wouldn't want a DW without it after having that feature for the last 15 years.

Love my Miele! I had to replace my more basic model with a fancier one during covid, due to availability issues - (dog landed on open dishwasher door and bent hinge)
Otherwise 16 year old was was great, never had a service call, new one at 5 years is also excellent-

Be sure that whichever brand and model you buy, that it has a "loading pattern" you like. My KitchenAid is about 15 years old, is so quiet I can't hear it at all, and does a fantastic job with cleaning even the most crusted-on baked food. I love the silverware tray (the "third" rack on the top). Be sure to get a stainless steel interior.

@nester44 it’s a kitchenaid that currently doesn’t work. We bought it for Tue reasons you listed. I am still a tiny bit hopeful it is fixable but likely wouldn’t buy another if the life span, which they told us was accurate, is 7 years.

It may be that current models are not as well constructed as in the past. My current KitchenAid is about 15 years old, as I said, with no repairs. Prior to that one, I had a KitchenAid for over 19 years and it was still working when I replaced it because I wanted something quieter.

I love my Kitchenaid. The only Bosch I ever had was the noisiest home appliance I ever had. Way noisier than the Whirlpool it replaced. Possibly it was improperly installed, but even so—Kitchenaid for me.

IT'S ODD, .........I have a GE of considerable age, that sends dishes and glassware back to me SPOTLESS in under an hour. Was probably 300.00 over 20 years ago. Clean as a whistle, spotless wine glasses.

My sister had a fail on hers in her condo, and needed a same day replacement, Everything in her kitchen is white and I scooped a 300.00 GE for her off the appliance store display floor that delivered rusted racks in under two years.!!, while mine has not a speck of rust @ 20 years.

Long story short? Get a Bosch. : )

I favor Bosch and if money is an issue, I'd even recommend one of their affordable models. I have an 800 now, but in my last house, I had an entry level Bosch and it was still very good! Maybe a few decibals louder and didn't have a stainless steel tub, but worked very well.

Did the dishwasher stop mid-cycle? What is the model number? I have a Whirlpool dishwasher -- Kitchenaid is a Whirlpool brand -- that stopped mid-cycle. I eventually figured out that there is a non-obvious fuse attached to the control panel (but not ON the control panel circuit board) that blew that stopped the dishwasher. Replacing the fuse and a two wires saved the twenty-year-old dishwasher and cost $15 for the parts.

The Bosch SHE43C75N ($800 only at Best Buy) performed well in CR's tests but bring a plate and bowl to the store to check if you like the layout and tines.

@wdccruise no the cycle won’t start? No water comes into the dishwasher. The repair person comes today and he was excellent for our oven. I know if he can fix it he will. I will mention this fuse thing.

I assume you checked to make sure that the circuit breaker didn't blow.

Does anything happen when you press the buttons? Does the control panel have indicator lights and do they light up when you press buttons?

What's the dishwasher model number?

Yes we reset the breaker as a first step, checked the filter and the float. No change. The cycle runs through it no water washes the dishes. So the lights work etc.

My BOSCHE dishwasher stinks. The "airdry" technology stinks as the switch to pop open the door is unreliable. The BOSHE repairman has been to my house 3 times in the last 2 years staying that the new models arent the same as they were 5 years ago.

Six months later and our kitchenaid has held up after repair. We also got lots of tips abojt how to maintain more and care for it.

I have a Samsung for a couple of years now. Comparable to the Bosch 800. I love it and it was a couple hundred less than the Bosch.

@eugenekwalker, if you’re going to make such a bold, negative complaint about an appliance, the least you can do is get the brand’s spelling right. It’s Bosch. B-O-S-C-H.

I’ve had six dishwashers in three homes over the past 34 years. The only real disappointment was the Maytag bought in 1993 (giving dates because they may have improved since). We got a GE that never broke down but the interior rusted. Our first KitchenAid was fine, lasted seven years. Currently we have a second KitchenAid bought during covid. It runs well but is noisier. Perhaps ironically, my favorites were the two Whirlpools—loads of features and very quiet. This all makes me think that the appliance is only as good as the installer.

oldsue, Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006 and quickly ported all Maytag-branded appliances to WP design. Whirlpool has owned KitchenAid since 1986. KA-branded dishwashers segued over to WP mechanicals and aesthetics over the next decade until they were fully WP.

My most favorite DW I have ever had was a Kitchenaid from 2003. It stayed with the home when we sold it. My SIL has A Bosch and she hates it. It stinks, as in literally smells awful. She has had it serviced three times and each time they tell her there is nothing wrong with it. She has to leave the door open between washes or else she gets mildew growth and the odor is even worse. Something is very wrong.......I have been speccing a lot of Miele for projects and have had no complaints. I have a GE in this current home which came with the home and have just been waiting for it to die but it is year 9 and no issues. When it happens I will be ready top replace with a Miele or Kitchenaid.

oldsue. There is no technical skill involved in installing a dishwasher. I don't think once about unhooking the water supply line, unplugging the power cord and clamping the outlet hose where the old hose was clamped to the disposal. I've done My and my friends Mieles .Zero problems.

The performance of the dishwasher is 100% tied to the quality of the product and the manufacturer. Miele and Bosch only. For Miele the lower tier G5000 series is my rec. 5058 SCVi SFP.

Just writing to acknowledge Dan1888 and Dadoes’ comments. The Maytag DW that we didn’t like was part of a total kitchen renovation where we moved the kitchen to a completely different room, so maybe the new plumbing was the problem, not the install itself. This was before Whirlpool bought Maytag. We bought that dishwasher because we were so impressed with Maytag clothes washers and dryers, but maybe the DW wasn’t the their core competency. Anyway, thank you for the information.

oldsue, Maytag's dishwashers for some years had some unique design elements. Reverse-rack layout, with plates in the upper rack, glassware in the bottom rack. The pump/filter-spray assembly was belt-driven by the motor. GE in the '60 and '70s had a plastic coating "Plastisol" on the interior of the tub and door (as an alternative to porcelain), which resulted in rusting if the coating was breached, cut/scratched-through.
