Living Room setup

Hello. Trying to figure out how to style this sideboard on this wall. It’s roughly 60 inches wide and 60 inches tall. I was thinking seating? I put a few plants on the ends and I didn’t really like that either. I have the antique chair next to it right now, but I think it’s too much antique in one space. I have a pretty modern sectional behind the area, roughly 117x117 in size…

Can you put the sofa on the wall where the sideboard is? With some art over the sofa possibly. And you could possibly add a slim sofa table behind the sofa- if you need the sofa to be further forward. Right now, your furniture placement seems awkward.

Can you show pictures of the other 2 walls? Is the sofa facing a tv?

The sideboard is lovely. Is there a dining area adjacent to this space?

I have an open concept home. The couch is probably going to stay, as is the tv on the wall. I plan to have my husband build a brick/tile wall where the tv is with mantel….the pink couch is temporary, it’s for my dog to look out…We just moved to this house and I am thinking about getting two modern benches for the windows.

    Congratulations on your new home!

The window bench idea is nice, as is the brick/tile wall. But does the sofa have to float? Is there a dining area or foyer where the sideboard could go?

I added a few more photos to the discussion….are you able to see them? I think my husband wants the tv on this wall, and the sofa looking this way, so you can see the view of our property….

Ok. Thank you for the additional pics.

Beautiful place- and lovely furnishings. You have it set up well. Except, if that is the front door with the beautiful wreath - I would want to get my sofa out of the entryway. So, by any means necessary- I would find another home for the tv. I think I would forget the brick wall. I would not build a shrine to the tv. If this is the only living room space available, I would get the sectional out of the doorway- anchor it on the most convenient of the two walls, put some art over it. And I would house the tv in a tv lift cabinet, placed in front of one of the windows.

    I’ll post info.

I just saw your other comment. I understand. I see you have a really majestic property- and if that’s where your husband wants to view it from, I get it. But I will still find and post the tv lift info for you, so you have it.

I suggested having a smaller sectional in front of the tv around the window to the right of the front door, but he didn’t like that either. If I could convince him to get smaller tv, I wonder if that would work?

Do you have a floor plan of the open concept space? that certainly would help for furniture layout suggestions.

I added a photo of the that particular area of the home…It was supposed to have the gas logs, we are going to maybe do the brick wall and electric insert at some point in the future…at least that was my want for the space…

Your idea was on point, Sarah. Exactly my thought... So you know what they say- “great minds... ” ;)

It might even work with the size of tv that you have currently. With a lift cabinet, the tv would not be blocking the window all of the time. And if he doesn’t want to get a smaller sectional, which I understand - I believe you could use your existing one with that arrangement. Even if it extended a bit into the entryway, it would not be blocking the entry.

    Here is tv lift info:

You can purchase a tv lift cabinet, build one/have one built, or customize an existing cabinet. Amazon sells the lift mechanisms.

If the TV is staying on that wall I think it should be lowered, pictures can be deceiving but it looks too high to me. Your initial question was with regard to styling the sideboard. My first thought is to remove the lamps, they they’re too large for it, overpowering. My other thought is that I think a nice large live potted indoor plant/tree would look good on the side closest to the window. You have large windows that admit lots of light.

I was just looking at the lamps when I walked past the living room a few moments ago…I agree. I think they are too big…they stick out too far on the piece of furniture.

Could you replace the white sideboard by your dining table with this one but NOT in front of the dining window? Do you have have room

That sideboard needs a strong vertical element above it so the arrangement looks complete. A single large artwork or a well-sized mirror placed above the sideboard will balance the wall and help the piece feel intentional. Keep decor minimal and scale-appropriate by using fewer items with varied height, such as one lamp, one tall sculptural object, and a tray or books for layering. If the sideboard is antique, use one modern element like a thin-frame mirror or clean-lined lamp to bridge traditional and contemporary styles and make the mix feel cohesive.

I do think it needs artwork above it. I have a scuptural metal bird art that I can hang above. I will add a picture of that. I don’t know about a mirror above it since it has a small mirror included with the piece itself… I thought about using the antique sideboard in the dining area, but I think I like the painted IKEA sideboard better in front of that window….

I also think it could use a sofa table behind the sectional but I really want to get the other space figured out first…I even thought about having a chaise lounge on only one of the windows and maybe having a plant stand for the other?

Nothing is needed above the sideboard, perhaps on either side but not above.
