The lighting is the issue it is odd and seems dull but you have lots of pot lights. The white seems white but there seems to be a yellow cast coming from something. Some undercbinet lighting would help I think. The island seems to be a different color than the other cabinets too.Do you know what K value the other bulbs are in the pot lights ? Sort of not sure what the issue is. You have pretty simple hardware and the holes there will drive whatever you choose for new so IMO keep what you have . I would probably change the hood to stainless before redoing the backsplash

If you like the layout and don't want to consider an extensive renovation, I wouldn't just focus on the backsplash and hood/vent. Not loving the granite counter tops, the white dishwasher, or the color of the cabinets. To really get the most out of any renovation, I would re-paint the cabinets, replace the counters and the backsplash, and get both a s/s hood and dishwasher. You could also consider under-cabinet lighting.

But you may find that even with doing all that, you are left with a kitchen with high/low cabinets and a very cramped cooking area. It all depends on your budget and tolerance for disruption.

A new backsplash is a great idea - I’d take the current one off (there are youtube videos with tips) and then you’ll have a cleaner slate to pick your new tile. Do you have access to a tile pro? FWIW our neighborhood facebook page is a great spot to find recommended pros for this type of project

First change out the dishwasher and stove hood, and get under cabinet lights. Those changes alone should make a huge difference.

For ceramic tile you would look at the lightest color in your stone and try to find glazes that compliment that. Just having a little gloss or sheen might brighten the space considerably.

Please put a piece of white paper or paper towel on the granite countertop and take a couple photos. The white paper helps the camera color balance so it can show colors closer to real life.

I agree with Kay Stu and I might add that taking away just the cabinet over the sink would improve the dated high/low uppers (maybe add a shallow open shelf and a sconce in its place…and now would be the time to do it with any backsplash change).

If you really want to save money and this is a stop gap negate a bigger renovation then paint the tile backsplash. There are paints you can buy for this. You can also buy stick on tiles tust go over existing. We did this in a basement suite and it was a great hold over before we renovated.

The biggest impact is replacing the dishwasher and hood. The earthy tones work well together and are coming back in popularity.

Your tile harmonizes very well with your "givens" --the countertops, floors, cabinets. Keep the backsplash, but add a pendant light (s) over your island. Add undercabinet lighting at the same time if you don't have it. This kitchen has same palette as yours. Look how having pendant lighting over the island brings light to the middle of the kitchen and adds a glow to the entire space.

Is the existing backsplash tumbled marble? Can your budget afford to replace the tile with same quality material or by changing to ceramic tile will you be downgrading the material?
