Cabinet crown moulding painting

last month
last modified: last month

Im having our wood floor refinished and restained soon. Undecided about stain choice but will keep it a light to medium brown color. Nothing darker then Early American.
Got me thinking about painting the cabinet crown molding white to match the cabinets. Now would be a good time before we have the floors redone.
We have an island that is the same dark cherry color as the crown molding. Our trim around the house is a light pecan stain color. New countertops will be a later project. The island posts are support beams, so those are staying.
Should I paint the crown moulding to match or leave it as is?
I've always thought it looks choppy next to all the other wood tones around the house. Also, I thought that painting them would make the cabinets look taller. I'm going back and forth and please let me know your thought.
Please excuse the mess, we are still getting the house put back together from the holidays.
Thanks!

It is currently a very unique look that draws the eye to the ceiling which I don’t think of good.

I agree. We moved in about 3 years ago and I still don't know if I like it. I just want to make sure Im making the right decision. My husband loves it, but he loves dark wood features.

Is there a picture posted that I can’t see?

IMO remove the rown it should have been done to the ceiling but with the cabinets raised first . Right now it makes no sense, might as well get rid of it .

The crown moulding is staying. So I'm asking if I should paint it or not.

Match the crown to the cabs.🤗

    Another vote for painting.

Paint it the same as cabinets. Good thinking on doing it before the flooring project! 💪

Now I can see the pics! I would paint the crown on the cabs the same color as the cabs.I see that it does match the island & likely was supposed to tie into it but I agree with you that there’s too much going on with the lighter trim around the doors & the 2 colors on perimeter cabs. You might think about refinishing the baseboard trim & door trim the same color as the floor when you refinish. A lot of work but 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Absolutely! IMO, yes!

    Yes to painting.

Absolutely YES to painting to match cabinets.

You mentioned looking choppy. It looks choppy because the crown does not match the cupboards. Yes to painting it to match. The issue will become matching I am afraid. I would also remove the crown and the white trim that spans the sink area while I was at it.

Definitely paint it the same white as the cabinets!

Paint it to match the cabinets. That crown should never have been done in a contrasting color.

Definitely paint the crown above the white cabinets. Leave the island supports stained to match the island cabinets.

Definitely paint it! The dark crown loos like a shadow and makes the kitchen look dark,

Here it is! What does everyone think? They still have the trim below the cabinets to paint.

Only thing is that the lighting makes the crown look whiter then the cabinets sometimes. If itit's in the shadow it's spot on with the color.

I read if I have the ceiling painted a bright white, it will fix the lighting hitting the crown.

It looks very nice--I wouldn't worry about slight differences, they always appear depending on the lighting.
