Engineered or Sand and Finish? Help..Please!

We are building a new home, and I keep going back and forth between engineered wood floors and sand/finish. We had sand and finish for 12 years in our previous home, and loved it. We've gotten a few bids to do sand/finish on our new home, and it ranges around $8/sf with labor and materials. I'm not as crazy about the look of engineered (since you can see the beveled lines...and for some reason I always think "it's not real wood" even though I know it is, just much thinner). However, the price is tempting (Could be as low as $5-$6 installed).

Our builder is not keen on the sand/finish b/c it makes a mess and takes forever, and apparently everyone does engineered these days. We are one of the larger homes in the neighborhood, and I'm nervous about driving up the cost too much.

Does anyone have engineered? What do you think of them? Any good brands you'd recommend?

Can't you do prefinished hardwood? I don't think everyone does engineered these day, I wouldn't!

There are a few of "us" in the hardwood floor biz that specialize in "custom" prefinished flooring that gives the best of both worlds... solid &/or engineered with unlimited options for species, style, color, etc..

For example, our engineered flooring has a 5mm (or heavier) face layer... which would allow multiple refinishes down the road if desired.
Engineered flooring was/is developed primarily for installation over concrete slabs... but the dimensional stability as well as improvements in the quality (of some) has made it a proven choice for many, even in nail down installations over wood subfloor.

As I just mentioned in a previous post... "all wood flooring is not created equal"... so if you look at the better products (hint)... you should find something worth your while... and if not, there are some great options in prefinished solid flooring as well (hint). lol
