Maybe no rug? You haven’t provided measurements but it appears that you might need fairly good sized rug there. if it were mine I would devote my resources towards a new chandelier, hung lower &something interesting for the tabletop. That will ”anchor” the space in your open plan.

My vote would be no rug. A rug is going to create an awkward narrow space between the two rugs. Is there a reason you feel you need a rug? Agree with using the $$ for a new chandelier and something on the table to tie the two areas together.

No rug and for sure not sisal Any textured rug is a bad choice where food can spill. I do not like a rug in a DR because it makes the chairs hard to move . In your space plus the fact the rug will create a tripping hazard in the walkway between the 2 spaces .. Please a much more interesting chandelier hung a bit lower too

I agree that you don’t need a rug. For all the reason mentioned plus it is just easier pulling a chair out and in.

I have a question about the position of your table.

Why is it not centered under the light fixture?

Why is the fixture mounted too high over the table?

These locations all make a difference.

Not sure the brass fixture works successfully with all your other furnishing selections.

I also agree no rug. I find however that the dining area doesn't seem to coordinate with the living room decor. The chairs you have do not "pop" with the dark table. You might have other dark wood items in the room that we don't see? I'm showing blue & white chairs to pick-up on the accent colour of your living room and I've replaced the chandelier.

The brass fixture, brought from another home perhaps, does not work in the pace. Nor does the upholstery on the dining chairs.

Would I recover? No. The price of fabric and labor will not merit that. Change the light, hang lower, and new chairs: ) No to any rug under the table.

Thank you ! Gave me inspiration to focus on chairs and table rather than rug. Light fixture has already been replaced with a gold Serena and Lily lantern but prefer the white multi fixtures several of you suggested. The table was my mom’s and haven’t been able to “let go” for f it YET.

A good way to connect adjoining spaces is with art and if there is a large wall in DR, I’d go that route vs a rug.

When not dining, add an earthy blue centerpiece and consider splurging on interesting blue dishes. Your table/chairs will benefit and you’ll create another connection to LR.
