    Alice that's interesting idea !

It could reflect your art above the bed. Thoughts on the chest as a nightstand was something I thought was interesting as well. On the left and place the two little nightstands you have together on right. Battery Wall sconces, absolutely, flanking the art above the bed. That gives you a better clue on size of art. I like the bed there between the windows with the shutters! Much better!

Curious, with width of bed plus chest plus two nightstands, what would be that width?

Ok looks like Jan has it at 12’ (?)

Alice Its 11 feet 5 inches from end of chest to end of nightstand

So a bit over 12’ if you use both nightstands butted together on right?

Are they both over there on right now?

No its 11 feet 5 inches

Do the two nightstands butted together work over there on the right? I couldn’t tell in your picture if they were both over there?

Alice yes the night stands are butted up

against each other together they 28 inches wide

May need another nightstand for over there? Doesn’t look too great? What do you think?

Got any other pieces for a nightstand? Shopping your house lol.

What the HELL is in a NAME?

The PURPOSE of a vanity is in the word. ?! "Vanity" Just as we use the name in the bath. Primping, powdering your NOSE, Brushing your hair a hundred times as they did in the thirties!

The mirror that went with the vanity? Is L.O.S.T in the room, lost on the wall, and you have no little seat or bench to pair with it! For any other purpose it HAS no purpose, so do it to suggest the use, or get rid of it.

Your dresser is nearly a high boy. The match to IT might have been lower and "demanded" a mirror to don your scarf or jewelry..Do a big round mirror over the vanity and there will be four feet on either side for you to cluster two tight little groups of prints.

So............no offense to Alice? No to art over the vanity.

Get some quarter size felt bumpers, stack them together, and get the night stands on the right LEVEL height. Put a LAMP on those and a lamp on the trunk In the meantime? Fold some cardboard until the two are level as one piece. These are on that side as it is the least noticeable spot. Truth? Neither of them is a great bed side at FOURTEEN inches width, Barely room for an Ipad. or a good mystery novel. Time changes and nearly a hundred years changes yet more. The bedsides are the size of a Pottery barn kiddie room. While you try that ? reverse them so drawers are nearest the bed.

By the way, The width of the bed and nightstands together is 89 inches and it matters not, because it makes zero sense to use the short wall for the bed. The 18' foot length room needs a stronger CENTER and the impact should be on ENTERING the room.

.Lets be honest here as we could have been at the get go? Someone got a hair in their fanny to buy a suite of furniture for a guest bed, that already HAD furniture and bedding that suggested the flavor of the space. Now, stuck with the bedding in a promise, and a lot of brown furniture in a dimly lit space? Let's make it work, or admit...................................we didn't think it through, didn't measure, and gave in to a whim .

That wall needs...this, And a way to make small and disparate pieces of art work on the only wall that will make sense as the other long wall is toooooooo long. The bed wall will not need the clutter, each piece on its own is small.....the last wall in the room is ALL DOORS .

    Apologies for the rant.: )

Full CONTEXT rears its head...yet again.

The Big long wall? Proportion matters.........Let me set some art aglow....

See BELOW.......AMAZON PAINT IT!!! Yes...paint. A shade lighter than the WALL. Dirt cheap, right size. 71 inches long.

Prime the heck out of it, and then three coats. Might you see some grain? Not enough to notice.

    HANG ART!!!

    30" X 60" BELOW

    48 X 48 BELOW........

Ok makes sense on that vanity with mirror! If it stays in the room and yes a seat there could add interest and purpose. Good idea Jan on the pads to raise the shorter nightstand if using as one on the right side. Rug size I was thinking should be width of bed and including the “what ever OP uses for nightstands. Actually like the second set of art posted for the space better than the first. I’ve refinished many furniture pieces, not that they are masterpieces, but that would be a great idea for even one of the pieces already in the mix. Although brown is dominant here, if the walls get painted, which I would love to see, gloss black could be a nice ground for one of the pieces? As the shutters as well? That’s only if the walls and doors/trim go saturated. Btw Jan, never offense ever taken, truly. I do like to help out, sometimes I hit on something, but honestly love keeping up with the pros here which I am not. These dilemmas do materialize into beautiful spaces and always excites me to see the finals.

It's why we measure .See the dotted line? That's the rug 9 x 12. Could it be longer? It will crowd BOTH ling walls at 10 x 14

Perhaps we should pick a paint color before the art? Or visa versa? The teals are good, have to sample. I was hesitant about the teal colored rug if walls were going teal. Is that too much or would that help to encompass the bedding?

The following illustrates most of Jan's suggestions. You can level the 2 nightstands as suggested and I would move them slightly away from the bed, you have them leaning against the bed, leave some space. Once all of this is done, you'll then be able to look into an area rug.

We may have lost the OP..........? Who was following minute to minute and?

She may have had a V8 moment. Maybe the head slap of the dollars involved to REALLY make all of this work, around the "promise" to keep a rather not gigantic bedding expense, against a much more major expenditure......resulted in quite bit more expense than anticipated? Not just a rug. and the origin of the thread.

I noticed above, we have someone "following",

    For ANYONE following?

A look before you leap is always wise, particularly when it comes to highly stylized purchases in case pieces. They tend to be strong messengers./voices in a room. Mission, Victorian, Art Deco.....even Mid Century to a degree, fit that category. Very "period" all.. Design is story telling and that's where you think about YOUR story , the message, especially to yourself, that you will see every single day.

This is what makes the internet and its images so very tempting. You click, and pouf!! an image with a message that speaks to you. You see a whole, whether it is reality,, or AI produced. You then have to square that image, with your own home, you own furnishings, your own BUDGET. Maybe that image is one I mentioned above, perhaps it's very eclectic! But there will always be the need to translate that image, to you, to YOUR home. your budget.

Notably, this even applies to refreshing/updating a room.. I get calls from clients past with the same request. Got one just the other day! " I think I want a little refresh " .

Now my brutal honesty comes into play: How big, to what room/rooms. What's the budget. Amazing , lol is how I derail the potential project, deny myself the money making involved. Why? Because I will tell that client where the resources should go: flooring, a fairly major kitchen project, and now what? Some realistic numbers get tossed out, and the bucket of water, ice cold, elicits first silence, than "Yikes". . That was the Saturday call, in a nutshell.

'I have to talk to ______" We're leaving for Belize on Tuesday, then ______ and then we're going to______."

What did I say? "Well, life's a bunch of choices, But your refresh needs not less than 75k, so happy trails on the trip, and you think about the bomb, and the domino effect involved.: )

    Happy trails!!! : )

The OP needs to know that these are merely suggestions and to take and DYI yourself to keep expenses in a range you are happy with.

No need to overhaul the whole room.

I bet OP will be back.

Maybe/maybe not. Most homeowners do not realize the way costs have jumped unless they’ve done a project recently. It can be very overwhelming. I’ve been there as a designer and as a homeowner. Usually the scope gets reduced to a point where it aligns with the budget.

I'm the OP and I guess I am just pverwhelmed. My post about the rug took on a life of its own. Having said that I do really appreciate all of your ideas and that you spent so much time to help me figure this out, I admit I did not think things through when I impulsivly bought the furniture but it was such a good deal and in great condition I thought I could work with it. I am not even an "antiques" person but the guest room seemed like a great place to express my inner "vintage" girl. Re-arranging the furniture seemed to create a host of issues so not sure if I want to do that or not. With the lamps not fitting on the nightstands because of the shutters, and then not being able to put the curtain panels on either side of the shutters was disappointing. I cannot put the trunk as a nightstand and the two nightstands pushed togeter. that makes no sense to me. Nor am I willing to get rid of the dresser and replace with a console table. I really love all the pieces of that furniture and want to keep them together. Now my main decision is whether to keep the current furniture arrangement or switch to the new arrangement with the bed on a the shutter wall. Regardless I will get a rug, replace the art above the bed, replace current vanity mirror with a round mirror, If I do move to other arrangement I will buy sconces. Jan you are amazing and so committed to your craft I have learned so much from you like MEASURING! I should have started with that in the beginning. PS I did overhaul my entire house a few years ago. It cost me 100k to transform the tuscan style to a transitional one. Had to repaint every single room, get all new light fixtures, sell all the tuscan furniture and buy all new furniture. It was quite an undertaking. Keep in mind I live in a five thousand square foot house. Hence the reason why I did not replace the travertine tile as shown in the guest room. that would have cost a fortune and been a huge mess.

Next time you have a whim? Post it PRIOR? to the give in?

Personally? I think a sit down with DH. I still love the teal concept, yes to the rug, do the arrangement that suits you and spend MORE on the size appropriate wall decor. Let the Bedding Go. All the rest still works and with less "airy" a feel to the bedding. .....and a tad more sophisticated and less white.

It is ( apologies ) crazy to be in 5,000 sq foor home, and let that promise remain alive. Level with him.

    Williams Sonoma. ( gold )

    Get it RIGHT. : ) ?

Take a break , stand back and sloooooow down. The bedding is a nit to be fixed. You won't be divorced because of a 695.00 duvet set lol

Kill that bright white!!! background that went with the former room. Kill off Serena and Lily!

Keeping all the furniture pieces you like with your duvet cover, all your framed art + the new peacock frame, new sconces, new rug, new mirror and vanity seat. Here's an idea of how it would look and most of the costs for new items if on a budget. I suggest you replace the yellow sheets for white ones for your guests. For the lower nightstand, place a few sticker felt pads under the nightstand until both are at the same height. I also suggest you leave a few inches between the bed and the nightstands, the way you place them is too close to the bed.

Your furniture is beautiful and you do not have to apologize for it. It is really sad that you feel that you have to. And you are correct that your post regarding a rug took on a life of its own. Par for the course around here, unfortunately.

All anyone had to do was help you with the rug. That is it. Not insult your choice of bedding, your art, your furnishings, etc.

If a decorator cannot work with your furniture, bedding and art... well...

For sure use the gold sheets for guests. And as I mentioned upthread, I think going with a deep blue rug would work well with your bedding and art.

You could bring in a patterned throw on the bench- I think you had mentioned wanting to add more pattern. This visual I just created quickly, and the throw in it is pretty tame- but you could do a highly patterned throw, a faux fur- whatever you like!

A blue or green rug will go with the bedding & art. A thought of bigger art over bed if want.

Some really pretty and helpful ideas have been posted here. I do hope the OP returns. I like the furniture and bedding is very pretty and already purchased and liked by both her and OH. I was thinking the blanket you have at the bottom of the bed was a little off in color, but that’s my honest take on that and also sometimes colors are not as they seem on our monitors. There are easy and positive ways to make the space really pretty. I hope you come back here Julia. You’re starting with some great pieces. Yea the trunk and little nightstand didn’t work out too well as nightstands, but you tried them 💗 if you want to keep the trunk at the bed foot, you can have the bed back over to the far wall. No biggy, what ever works for you :). Might have to budget in two nightstands. Then you can have pretty lamps. Hobby Lobby keeps theirs half off sale every other week and keeps some pretty nice options, to me. You always get good ideas posted here on houzz. I’ve read and participated here for a long time and you just have to use what’s appealing to you and have fun with your space. Now rugs, I’ll admit are difficult! There are several shades of blues in your bedding to pull from which is a good thing. Budget pending on what you want to do always steers us as well. Totally can relate. I did have an idea for your mirror on the vanity if it can be of any help here. I wanted to post this before. Of course any suggestions you can try or not, it doesn’t matter but with that said, if the mirror comes off, turn it the other way and hang it on the wall above the vanity? Just a thought? Hate to not get to use that mirror? Love how the other posters have your art pieces hung around the mirror at the vanity. Very nice display of those art pieces. I did want to ask if you were considering painting the room in a darker perhaps teal color or keeping it the current wall color? That did come up a while back. That decision might steer the rug color and now that I’m thinking about it, the window dressings. You had mentioned the paint color on the shutters or removing and having drapes? I do love them shutters 💗 not sure if you could do a drape with a shutter. My guess is not so much? Sheets - color could go gold or white? But I do love your gold round pillow! Anyway, hope you come back on with some input and hopefully some of us have been helpful for you :).

Oh edit! I’m guessing you could still use the two nightstands there! They do seem small but this is a guest room and they can hold pretty lamps and have storage if you want to place the bed back over to the back wall. Didn’t mean to poo poo those really, they go with the set really well. And was mentioned a throw on the chest. Great idea there as well! Not sure how easy getting another patterned there bc I’m so not good at most of this, perhaps a solid would be easier in the scheme of things? I’m just posting what comes to mind here. My bad lol

You guys are going KILL ME, I decided to get new bedding after all , the one @janmoyer suggested Williams Sonoma Painted peacock. I think it will brighten up the art deco furniture more than the existing one. . BUT I can't find that teal rug that Dianna suggested (pic below) anywhere , its not on the Overstock website anymore . Someone else suggested a solid navy color instead of teal. the peacocks are navy on the bedding and in the photo I belive. Thoughts?

OP here. I feel compelled to respond to all of this. I am going to name names too! I really appreciate all the suggestions and comments from all of the pro's here. I tried not to take offense in any way when criticisms were shared in the thread. Admittedly I did have to re-read @janmoyer posts a few times to understand what she was trying to say. The capitalization of words that she does is somewhat off putting at first because I think it means you are yelling. BUT she is actually hilarious with her anecdotes and scenarios . And her opinions were very enlightening. I realized that I had never shared with ya'll that the bedding originally was purchased to go with a wicker furniture set, hence the "light and airy" feel. Sadly,It did not go well with the heavy antique furniture even though I tried to find a way using ya'lls suggestions. I was disappointed that the bedding I ordered did not look like how it was shown on the Z Gallerie pic online as well. It looked kind of "dingy" not as bright compared to the website photo. It is only 6 months old never been washed either since the guest room rarely gets used.. Here are some take aways I got from this exercise:

1 I learned that I should have measured the room before even posting in the first place

2.I learned that it is difficult to mix patterns without making the room look too busy.

3.I learned that it is possible to re-arrange the furniture

4.I learned that I needed to have different art in larger size above the bed.

5.I learned that sketching and mood boards was very helpful.

    6. I learned that there were things I should do to the bedding like add the lumbar pillow and have a throw at end of bed

    7. I learned that the lamps were too small.

    8. I learned that I need to replace the vanity mirror with a larger round one and get a stool.

    9. Finally, I learned that getting new bolder bedding was the only way to enhance the look and feel of the room and de-"grandma-ize" it.

To sum things up, I did purchase Jan's bedding suggestion and art suggestion yesterday as well as Diana's rug suggestion. I bought the 9x12 one which seems quite large but I will trust the experts on that one. I am still on the fence about painting an accent wall, I want to see how everything looks first. And finally I learned that @Janmoyer HATES Serena and Lily!

    I must add: )

Yes we wring hands on beauty, but the single most important elements in a guest room?

    Those remain unchanged....

    A good mattress

    GREAT sheets

A mix of sleeping pillows - down,m down alternative, soft, medium etc

A mix on the bed, light blanket, the duvet for warmth...a comfortable temperature in the room - neither too warm or ice cold.

Lighting... can someone read in the bed? And more from bedside tissue to a basket of items in the bath that someone may have forgotten to pack. Pain reliever comes to mind : )

    And as to sheets?

Best ever value? LLBean, 400 ct premium percale.
