New art over mantel

So we bought this painting in Santa Fe. The artist had a series of paintings that are views from above, which we really liked. (Many were looking down on cowboys, but we fell in love with the umbrella.) The painting we had here before really filled the space, and now I think we need to get used to the smaller size. What do you think, does it look too small?

And/or maybe I need to change what I have on the mantel? These are my beloved ceramic boxes, which could be moved if necessary.

Note — there is a spot in another room for the art, so it doesn’t have to be here. DH has it in his head that it belongs here. I am on the fence.

PS we are not moving the sconces! I know that would probably help but it is not happening.

Better pic of the art.

This was the art we had — pre-sconces.

Thirding what was said above. It looks perfect! I really like the art and your boxes together.

    Great choice!

Love the subject and that touch of red. Also like the frame better for that space than the narrower one on the bigger painting.

I think it looks great. Not too small for the space and it really picks up the rug so nicely.

First of all, your fireplace and mantel are so beautiful. I love the art and like it better there than the ptevious piece. Id like to see how it would look with something tall-ish on the mantel between the painting and the sconces. Dont ask me what that would be.

Agree - I think the new art looks great in your space!

It's perfect - you just need to adjust to the change.

I really like it too, including the boxes. I like to see some space between objects. My only hesitancy is that the close up of the painting looked like a vibrant orange on my monitor, whereas your rug had some pink overtones. Is real life, it may be perfect.

I like the art, and I think it fits better than what you had, to boot. Enjoy!

Wow, thanks. I was thinking the responses would be more like 50/50.

Re Tired, IRL the umbrella is more red, less orange. And the rug is a rusty red.

I like the new art piece, but I would move the sconces in a little closer. I realize you wouldn't likely do that until you are sure which piece is going in which place.

Thank you. As mentioned, we cannot move the sconces.

I always wonder why you ever second guess your choices. They are almost always perfect!

I'm another one who thinks it looks better than what had been there - not only the size but also the subject. I like the bold, vibrant colors of the new piece.

I think the size of this painting works better and especially like the colors and how it connects with the rug.

I like it right now. Leave everything as is. The pop of red is perfect. So are the sconces.

I also think the new artwork looks terrific in it's new home, which surprises me as I've admired your prior piece every time I've seen it. I hope you have another spot in your home for it so that you can enjoy both.

We are passing the other painting along to DS and DDIL so it will stay in the family…we can visit it! We don’t have many walls large enough for big art, and since DDIL and the painting are both from the south, it made sense to offer it to them. 😃

We obviously tried to use as much as possible from our old house when we moved to this one 7 years ago, and not everything worked. We had bigger expanses of wall in that house!

We are in the process of replacing some ”former house” furniture in another room, too, now that we have realized we never use the room as is.

Anyway, thank you all for your kind words! It did take me a bit, but now it already feels like the new painting was meant to be there. The color is very cheery.
