I like HiBar in the Volumize, mostly because I can get it locally. The conditioner is only slightly oily so it acts as a detangler and doesn't weigh hair down. You want to avoid heavy oils and butters if you have fine hair. I don't use shampoo bars anymore but I still prefer the conditioning bars over bottled conditioner, which are too heavy for my fine wavy hair.

Shampoo bars don't work as well with hard water. Chagrin Valley is a good resource for learning about them. I'm not sure if I've ever used theirs but they are available on A-zon. I see they sell shea butter free bars.

I’ve tried two brands, do not remember the names but both from Amazin, neither worked at all. Our water is not especially hard but neither bar lathered at all.

I also have fine hair, and I've been using this shampoo bar for years and years. I love it. We have very hard water and it still lathers up really well. I keep mine in a small mesh bag, just bigger than the bar itself, that has a ribbon drawstring. That way, it hangs to dry. There is no need to ever remove it from the bag -I just rub it on my head still in the bag.

Lush Shampoo Bar

Washing my hair with a bar brings back a not very pleasant memory. I’ve mentioned before that I was a flight attendant in my early 20s. Shampoo was only provided by the most luxurious hotels. I was on a layover in Salt Lake City (nice hotel, but not luxury) and decided I needed to wash my hair. I washed it with a bar of soap. OMG. It was gummy and nasty for days. I’m having a hard time shaking that memory!

-do you use a conditioner bar too? Although, now that I think of it, I use so little conditioner that I can put enough ordinary conditioner for a 10 day trip in a contact lens case!

@3katz4me, the local Walgreens carries the Vanicream Z bar! I’ve got it in my cart for pick-up. Do you think it would be easy to cut in half?

No, I didn't have good luck with the conditioner bar. The LUSH shampoo bar I use is the SEANICK. It's turquoise colored. I've tried others but that one works best for me.

I would cut shampoo and conditioner bars in half for travel. I wash my hair daily and these bars last about six months so you only need a little. You might see if the brand you're considering sells sample bars.

I’ve bought the Vanicream Z bar that 3katz recommended, because I needed other things from Walgreens too. There is a Lush store-front near DD. Next time, I visit, I’ll try one of theirs.

I did not know it, but DD has a bar from Attitude. She didn’t opine on it. Just mentioned she had it.

@3katz4me, have you ever bathed with the Z bar?

I don't see why you couldn't cut the zbar in half though I've never done it. I also have never used it for bathing though I think it is also intended for that use. They have a regular bar for that purpose as well.
