Accent color on the bump-out wall?

last month
last modified: last month

Hey all, just moved into this home up in New England during the Xmas season. Living Room was an open square (11' x 13') so I added this bump-out for TV & fireplace, then painted the room BM Linen White. Was fine with a Christmas tree and decorations everywhere but now it's back to the boring-ish ol' norm and we want to figure out how to finish it for good. Other than drapes or a valance across the bay window, maybe a decoration above the TV and lowering those art frames on the right walls a few inches; Paint the bump-out something like BM Revere Pewter to accent?? Leave it alone?

Thanks for any & all suggestions!

Ooo bamboo blinds is a great idea... I think you're right, some window love will definitely help. The Xmas tree & decor really had the room come alive so the sudden shift to having the room be much more monotone after ripping everything out of there today was quite jarring, leading to our thought on maybe an accent color. Hard to figure out without the accent itself also being too jarring...

IMO none of that wall decor belongs in this room. You could paint the bump out and the two set backs also.

I added drapery panels the color of the sectional, but you could go with a neutral linen also. I also added matchstick shades on the front window.

Thank you Beverly that's a great mock up you did there I appreciate that, we were going back n forth on whether to use accent the color on the return walls as well. Definitely stealing a couple of ideas from here...

I like @BeverlyFLADeziner tall tree in that right corner - another option for the skinny space is to install floating shelves and make it a built-in looking bookcase

That was our original plan! Then we changed it to adding stone onto the bump out, then my wife said nevermind that she enjoys how clean/not-busy the bumpout looks this way. So yes thank you for reminding me! I think i will add floating shelves to some degree, again. Maybe with those + bigger plants and getting some treatment on the big window it will make the area seem less empty & we won't feel the need to worry about messing w the TV wall

With sloped ceilings like yours, I'd avoid painting the TV area an accent color. However, you could paint/highlight the narrow sections of the walls to the left and right of the TV wall. Or, for a more daring option, paint wide diagonal stripes on the TV wall (choose a suitable color).

The slope of the stripes should match the slope of the ceiling.
And I love your posters on the walls. I also support the idea of blinds, but not the usual fabric curtains on a rod.

I also agree that you can leave it as is, but work on the decor and accents. But in any case, it's always better to see the entire room.

Charcoal paint on the bump-out only. Lowered art on the wall, bamboo roman shade on the window (inside mount), curtains, accent pillows, a fuller looking plant on the small table, coffee table decor. I went with navy & red accents to coordinate with the colours in your area rug.

We have something similar in our home, no TV mounted above , however, we painted only the bump out , but Beverly’s suggestion would work, we debated on doing that. Perhaps we should.

We used Farrow & Ball’s ”Mole’s Breath”, can look very different depending upon the light, ours leans more brownish than gray. We thought it a little less harsh than charcoal, but with your TV mounted above charcoal could look good.
