D daylilies 2026

last modified: 28 days ago

Please show us your D daylilies today. E’s will be on monday.

Winter hit today some snow and vicious wind. Temps went from 48* to 22* today.

Funny today: The difference between genius and stupidity is genius has its limits.

Dances With Giraffes had much shorter scapes and fewer buds. It has consistenty been the bud queen here.

Destined to See

Divine Design has survived being moved too often, not a great photo, going to post one from last season.

Sherry: Interesting pics of Divine Design and how from one season to another the color can be.

Maryl: I haven't grown any doubles here but did in NYS. Nice photo of it. Name?

Dearest Valetine. Put up a lot of scapes and buds but first blooms tend to not open fully. I moved it this past fall to another spot to see if having it less crowded by Balloon flowers would help with the openings. Second pic shows the old location surrounded by Balloon flowers.

    Late morning pic.

Early morning pic on different day.

Sherry, your Dances With Giraffes always looks good. Julia, Dearest Valentine looks great. Your bed soil looks so rich and the plants seem to love it.

Here are some of my Ds

Dragonfly Tatoo-bloomed early and gave rebloom twice-not well budded in my garden

    Diviner’sHandbook

Derek’s Triumph is in a pot so no assessment yet!

    Davi’s Dilemma on rebloom

Dearest Valentine on rebloom on early cloudy morning with nice dark color

Down Home is another that made a come back after two years

Deep Dark Duck had best year ever due to constant daily rain in the spring. It always bloomed low in foliage and I tried to give it away on here but no takers! I am looking down at it to get all the blooms in this photo so you can’t tell that it is well above foliage here. That is Arrowhead Princess photobombing-I forgot to put it in the As category

Diamond Shores is not well budded but blooms are beautiful

Dark Raven was new and still in a pot.

Daringly Different is a Maryott that surprisingly does well in my garden but is not that impressive in looks to me and I rarely photograph it

My picks of these D daylilies are Deep Dark Duck and Dearest Valentine.

I have been disappointed with Dennis Russell. I looked for a long time before I found it at a decent price but it has not lived up to my expectations. It doesn't seem to be a very vigorous grower in our garden and the flowers are rather erratic. I like the similar Glowing Quasar much better.

Dipped in Disney is new to the garden. We bought it to use in our reverse bicolor/bitone breeding. I generally don't like these little flowers what are really round. The color is striking though.

    That's all I have.

It's good to see Dearest Valentine growing in other people's gardens. It is a late morning opener for me. Julia, it looks like a nice clump in your garden. Kate, I like the deep color on yours and how flat the bloom is open. It was a terrific rebloomer here last summer, reblooming on almost every fan.

    Dearest Valentine

    Dearest Val on rebloom

Dancing Flamingo was short in its first year here.

Dearest Valentine is late morning opener, which is what time--10? 11? It certainly grows well for Julia.

Dancing Flamingo is a showy flower, but one person in PA told me that it is a very poor increaser and always low bud count. Seems to be used a lot in hybridizing though. The PA person kept it just for the flower.

Rebloom is important in Kate's garden, but largely irrelevant here unfortunately.

Dutch Yellow Truffle is a beautiful double!

Drew Hoo is tall and airy. A personal favorite. Refers to a neighbor's manner of calling out to a maintenance worker in the area of the Davisson winter residence. Crazy Kate was another character in this neighborhood.

Doctor McGregor's Garden. Out of Carolina Cool Down.

Hanson's Dirty Bastard. Hard to capture its dark sooty color.

    Davi's Dilemma.

    Doctor Handsome

Dawn of Aquarius--a Hanson that has been an important parent.

Emmerich's Deep Waters. Hasn't been a fast increaser here.

Discerning Heart--a beautiful Emmerich. Sometimes a few spots, but quite minor.

Davisson's Deep Dark Secret. Good grower. Always above foliage but not tall.

Dennis Russell, once established, has been a consistent performer here for many years.

Desire of Nations after being divided.

Dippity Doo Dah, a Davisson diploid, had good rebloom--a rarity here. I quite like it.

Korth's Dark Jubilee is difficult to capture, as photos tend to show more red than reality. Under 6 inches, it has good height and stands out.

Korth's Dark Gethsemane is not as purplish here as in the hybridizer's photo. Quite tall. Hasn't been a rapid increaser here.

Santa Lucia's Duel Zone. I am attracted to the bitones, even if the plant habit isn't perfect.

And with the early summer rains, some oldies perked up, such as Double Bold One.

DOWN HOME, DIAMOND SHORES and DEAREST VALENTINE all grab my attention. Debra, do you think DEAREST VALENTINE would survive my zone 5 garden?

Here are the Ds that I grow:

DEAR MOM: One of the first daylilies that my parents ordered from Wild's 32 years ago.

    Dr. Jules Michael Vinkman

Dark Witch: This one never impressed me until this year. Really tall, well branched and budded. Love how the midrib takes the petal color toward the throat.

DING DONG DITTY: A nice Bennett.

    DRAGON FANG

    DESIRE OF NATIONS seedling

    DASHING YOUNG AQUANAUT

DOING ALL RIGHT: Another Bennett. This is one that is slow to increase

    DIVINER'S HANDBOOK

    DRUM BOOGIE: Another Bennett

DOUBLE MY SUNSHINE: Saw this blooming at Cottage Gardens and had to come home with me. It is a large bright yellow double.

    DAN MAHONY: At COTTAGE GARDENS

    That is it from me.

    Stay warm!

Dark Witch I see is a Gossard, and Double My Sunshine is a D. Gossard that is registered at 35 inches and has taken home an AM award. The Desire seedling looks as though it may be larger than Desire. Dashing Aquanaut is also out of Desire.

Dr. Jules Michael Vinkman was the best it has ever been here, But it was also its farewell year. Flowers were larger and stood out, whereas they tended to recede in the past.

David - Dearest Valentine lived and flourished in Julia's New York garden, but it did not do well for Sherry in Illinois. I'm not sure what zones they're in. I don't know if I will get much increase this year because my mowers kept mowing down the front three fans of it. I love that Desire of Nations seedling!

Desire of Nations has certainly been used a lot in hybridizing, and not just by Emmerich. It is not much over 5 inches, but is a hardy evergreen. Attractive, but could stand a few more inches in height (IMHO). Moderate increase here.

A Waldrop, Diana's Evening Gown, regularly throws some beautiful flowers here. It has proven reliable here over many years, but a modest increaser. Flower quality is consistently good. It does often rebloom, but in a year like the past, with half an inch of rainfall from August 1 to mid-September, one isn't going to see much rebloom. Rebloom is never a big deal here.

Here is Diana this past year. Does anyone have other Waldrops that have performed well? Lydia's Regal Robe does very well, but I am reluctant to venture into others. His stuff in general, I believe, has a reputation for slow increase.

Dragon Nation, a Culver, is a large earlier bloomer.

Darlington County, another older Stamile pink. The Stamile pinks show so many different shades.

David: I have grown Dearest Valentine in my 5b/6 NYS garden with plenty of snow and very low temps. Here in WV my zone is 7 for the last 4+ years here we've had a mix bag of weather conditions. Some snow cover. This year it has been extremely cold with little snow so far but I just moved DV this fall to a new spot in my garden. I have a very nice clump of it and I'd offer you a couple of fans but not sure how it will do this season due to moving it and I don't want to divide it till the fall. If your still interested, let me know.
