Back hallway entry from garage

last month
last modified: last month

I have an extremely narrow hallway leading in from our garage. The back staircase is straight ahead of the door. If you turn to the right as you enter, there is a narrow hallway with shallow closets on both sides. They both have bifold doors and if left open, you can't walk through the hallway. It's always made me crazy. Behind the closet on the left of the photo is the dining room and we could take a little of that space. Behind the closet on the right is the kitchen and refrigerator, so we are pretty much stuck with whatever space is left after removing the closet. I would love a butler's pantry - even one wall. Or a pantry (walk in would be nice but I don't think there's any way). We store coats and shoes on one side, so I still need storage for that. We don't have another coat closet in the house. I've been trying to figure this out for years. Any ideas? The floor will change to tile since the wood is ruined.

I added a few pictures including one inside the garage showing some space available. See the step up. We could enclose that whole area and move the door. We have to replace all the drywall in the garage so we figured once the old drywall comes off we can play with the layout a bit.
