glass shower or not?

will we be a slave to squeegeeing a glass shower? Should we use a frosted glass or clear or none?

Even frosted glass will show soap scum after time, is that your main concern? Squeegeeing doesn't take but a minute, and I think an 'open' shower could be cold. Clear glass is the best, IMO.

Thanks, I appreciate your comments. Do you need to squeegee every shower?
Not at all. I include it in my weekly detailed cleaning but only need to do it in between if someone gets shampoo or conditioner on it.

I agree with Charleee that regardless of what type of glass you install that you will be fighting against soap scum, hard water, etc. I have installed both types frosted/textured glass and clear for clients...textured glass will show less build-up than clear over time. Trick to great glass is to clean, clean, and clean...I suggest a healthier product choice like Method Shower and Tile cleaner to help stay on top of the soap scum.

I have a clear glass shower, and yes, I squeegee after every shower. I am a bit OCD too, and I also keep a rag in the bathroom and wipe everything down after I'm done. It only takes a minute and it's worth the effort. When it dries (even if you only squeegee), the glass stays clean and clear. I have a water softener also, so soap scum isn't much of an issue, but I do it regardless.

I find if I do this regularly, i don't have to scrub the shower as often either.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is also good for built up soap scum, then use Sprayway glass cleaner for the shine.

Our shower will be a good size (4'8"x6'9") and the shower head and overhead rain will be at one end. Any idea on how to figure how far water splashes? It might be ridiculous to try to figure that in to the occasion. The glass door and 2' panel will be at the far end and corner. (Hope that makes sense??) I love the look of clear glass, but our builder is suggesting a frosted glass. Decisions, decisions!

Water splashes approximate 12" past the end of any kind of shower enclosure!

Seriously, from what I've been told, there is a glass that won't allow soap scum and hard water deposits to build up. Perhaps your builder knows of this?

Splash range will depend on if you are adding body jets and their position within the shower space...those can create a pretty wide splash range. IF your entrance is approximately 6' away, you should have minimal splash issues on the glass. Go with the glass that YOU prefer, not the contractor. You should love our space :)

    That's a good one! lol.
Oh, wow, that is what I'm looking for! No, I know out builder isn't aware of this kind of glass as she has suggested the frosted kind to avoid the daily squeegeeing. I've heard of applying "Rain X" or something like that, but I'm not sure how effective it is. We are building in AZ where the water has a lot of Calcium (even though we are going to put in a "whole house filtration system") everyone says there is a lot of residue.

Thanks Connie! Life is short and this is our last build, so I think I will heed your advise! I'm just lazy and want this house as maintenance free as it can get. lol.

oops...I spelled your name wrong...Corinne! sorry!

ps....I'm thinking we don't need body jets. I guess Iwe've never had them and maybe just don't know what we are missing. We are thinking possibly a waterfall though. Any suggestions?
Do waterfalls have enough force? Like, enough pressure? I always wondered about that.

Jets can be a nice feature in the shower for a home spa experience. Your contractor can check H20 pressures to advise you one way or another.

We are building a shower close to that same size and plan to use clear glass to keep the sight lines open. No matter that glass - clear - frosted, etc. - it will require some maintenance. I plan on using something like Rain-X to coat the glass to help keep it clean; I use a wax on my brushed nickel fixtures and it really helps keep the spotting down and makes cleaning easier.

It is so easy to wipe down the glass after a shower. It means the shower STAYS clean. I also give a spritz of daily shower spray.

Agreed, phagengilden... I give the shower a monthly (yes monthly) scrubbing, because it just stays clean that long. The only thing that seems to get dirty (because i've wiped down everything every day) is the shower pan itself. Soft water helps a lot too... no soap scum.

A monthly scrubbing I can do. ...but I don't think I'm into daily wiping. I guess I'll have to suck it up to have the look. I'm also planning on polished nickel lav fixtures, so I'm already committed to daily wiping there. Did I say I wanted low maintenance? Is there such a thing?

Did I mention I actually would LOVE to put marble in for our counter tops, but have been strongly advised not to do that either!
I should have said "in the kitchen" .....as we ARE putting marble in on the vanities.
