Seeing Red on V Day

An account I follow on IG posted pics of rooms with red accents as a nod to V Day. I'm in my need-more-color era, and looking for inspiration. I did, a long time ago, paint my DR red, inspired by a Pottery Barn catalog photo, but it was too much for me. I repainted within a week. I think I'm more of a "red accent" person. If you have rooms with red accents, feel free to share.

@sueb20, did you even paint your iron bed red?

Those are some beautiful rugs (as well as the floors beneath them).

Thank you @Feathers11. It is a 1910 Four Square all floors are original. A room downstairs has many large black stains from past wet damage ( we were told could have been a pet ) but they are not fixable according to our floor guy and there isn’t any odor etc. It would have happened about 40 yrs ago . All else including stairs are perfect. 🙏

I love red. It's one of the few colors I can wear. I love it in my house, but would never have red walls. All my rugs are red-based, but no pics today. I have been attracted to orange lately and really love a burnt orange/rusty brick red. I don't care for red in my yard and am at a loss to explain why.

Bunny, most of my houseplants are in terra cotta pots, and I like that color.

The red in my DR was dreadful. The lighting was bad, and it just was too heavy. I had called Pottery Barn to ask the color in their magazine, and they wouldn't disclose it, claiming they didn't share designers' color choices. I thought, oh really? I'm trying to replicate a room in your catalog--that sells your furniture? They must have had a change of mind since then, because I believe they now share colors in their catalogs (it's been a while since I've received one).

I remember when red dining rooms were the height of fashion. I never had one, but my last house used red and navy Oriental rugs and accents. After 20 years there, I was ready for a change, so this house uses green as its accent color.

I avoid most red clothing as it's not the most flattering color for me, but I do love tartan in all things. I just have to remember to use it sparingly. Of course, not all tartans have a lot of red, but the most easily available in the U.S. do.

I like red, but the only place I think I've used red as an accent color is the kitchen 😏

But this reminded me there's someone on the board who loathes red - who was that?

C, your decor is so beautiful, thoughtful, and meaningful. I love it, and agree you and Ida (and Lynn!) have similar styles and wonderful taste. All three of you are so naturally talented.

Feathers, great rooms! I have some red in my house, mainly in art, rugs, and pillows. I’d like to add more.

I’ve had these rooms saved on IG for a while, was really drawn to the reds used:

Back during the heyday of red dining rooms, I had mine papered in a raspberry strie. The chairs were upholstered in the ubiquitous red toile. Oh, yeah, I was rocking the Country French look!

I have a red Korean chest that I use as an end table in our main living area and love the color and the intensity it gives the room. Red is one of my favorite colors but agree with most that it’s best used judiciously. Tha k you for posting these photos!

All my art has some red/rust in it.

Our second house, I painted the kitchen walls red ... it was 2004 and not an unusual thing to do back then! Not something I would do today, lol. That kitchen got a lot of natural light so it didn't feel dark.

I avoid the use of red in our home. It is not in my closet or DH's either. Unless you want to count Crimson in some of his walking clothes.

Do apples count? Full disclosure, I turned them so more red was showing.

Some of you may remember this painting and rug from DGSs guest room in our last house. The art was over a large desk, which is beneath windows here. The blue 48 star antique flag draws my eyes away from the red, so I can live with it. Blue has always been my favorite color.

I did not skip a beat when I saw this large birdcage. Even though it is red, it is a dull, distressed red. Sitting area on the top floor, between guest rooms. No apologies for the late 1950s cat lamp my parents purchased for their first nursery. I always use it somewhere.

I lived with, but did not care for, the living room rug in our last house. The drapery fabric and sofa were my distractions. The rug was traded for three rugs that were needed when we moved. Once I mentioned I could just have it cut down, they were happy to trade.

The antique red book is now in my dining room.

Allison, I do remember the flag in that wonderful guest room… I think your beloved kitty nibbled on it? :)

I’m always excited to see photos of your homes. The vintage cat lamp is perfect and fabulous.

ETA: Came across this on IG — the dressing table reminds me of the one in the lake house (and I think your last house). I hope you were able to keep it!

Beautiful rooms Allison. Like you and a few others here, i do not care for red. it is a good colir on me, but i do not wear red. I love blues and greens for our home and have fully embraced that. We do have a bit if red in our home office. I have my dad’s veteran flag and i wanted to display that (in the wooden holder they put it in). To coordinate, I added a red wood box, a print pillow for the chair/ottoman and a vintage small tool box in the room. We have a vintage credenza/buffet cabinet and library desk that I had painted black. To tie it all together I found in an antique shop, a great old hunting scene that had both black and a bit of red 😊. I can live with it!

Red is a pretty controversial color, so it’s not surprising that many either love it or hate it. When I took a color theory class, I was taught to “proceed with caution” when using red.

    https://www.colorpsychology.org/red/

I like red, but I couldn’t live with a whole room painted red. I used to use red more when I was younger — for example, we had a red sofa, and a lot of red accents in our beach house kitchen. The red sofa wore out, and the red in our kitchen has been replaced by pink. I wonder if our tolerance for red diminishes as we age? or maybe just me!

My first car was a Candy Apple Red Trans Am. I loved that car.

DH decorated our house with a bit of red this weekend. He picked out all the roses and greenery separately and arranged this bouquet. I’m so impressed by it, it’s better than any I’ve ever done. :)

My dad’s first car was Sumac Red. When they built their first house, he planted sumac as a border in the back yard. Later he had an Eldorado that was ”Mars Red” but it read kind of dark orange to us.

My first car bought as a married woman was a brand new bright red Toyota Corolla 1971. $1959.00 It was a stick shift and I had never driven one before. A Graduate Student friend of DH’s took me out in his MG and said ” I have 1 hr so we have to hurry” . He said all you really need to know is how to stop and start on a steep hill. He was right! I learned fast how to use a clutch and to this day I can drive anything with a stick. 😊 ( trailrunner)

I used to drive from Dallas to Chicago at Christmas with my neighbor. Her uncle would teach me, every year, how to drive the manual transmission. I never really got the hang of it: I could get on and off the interstate, and my neighbor took care of everything else.

My first car I bought myself was red. When DH’s little red beater died and we needed a commuter/train car, it was a pretty little red. All our other cars have been (yawn) grey. I want a copper color car!

Anyway, in my house, not a lot of red, but my kitchen is yellow and white and grey, so I have touches of red in some accessories like a scale, a poppy (commemorating DFIL), towels, a little art, and the like.

I do not think I have anything red in my wardrobe. Pink, yes. But no red.

However, this is my living room. Honestly, I'm totally over it. It's been this color for probably 15 years. DH still loves it and doesn't want me to change it. Sigh.

Other than a couple of DH's guitars (you can see one on the wall in the music room next door) it is the only red in my house.

@Jilly Yes! Sherman was his name. I was able to repair with wool fabric I found on eBay for war reinactments! His sidekick, Angel, ruined a pair of guest room sheers. Those had to be remade.

You have a good eye!.I purchased at Ethan Allen when we were building the lakehouse. Now DD2 owns. I was using the mirror here until she told me she thought she was getting the mirror too. I found the perfect one from an Etsy seller in Belgium.

ETA: I hunted down the Veranda article. "A vintage dressing table brings timeless flair to this gorgeous room" Ummm, Ethan Allen, 2006.

Tina, I inherited my grandfather's veteran flag. Such a lovely piece to have.

Jsk, your living room looks wonderful! The red is more of an accent because of the woodwork, drapery, and furniture. Plus, there seems to be a lot of natural light. In my DR, there was very little natural light, and all surfaces of all 4 walls were red. It was oppressive. Your room looks much more balanced.

Jilly, what a beautiful arrangement. Happy Valentines!

I have red in my house, but not on walls. My kitchen window seat and the antique rug in my living room are red.

The red guitars. I thought he had 3. Maybe one is in the basement, or at his friend's house, or maybe he sold it. He does buy and sell fairly often.

To me they are exactly the same so why does one need two (or three!)? But I'm sure he will say there are differences.

tuesday__2008, here's a photo of the wall unit in my dining room. The cabinets store liquor, vases, candles & holders, platters and other serving things that don't fit in my kitchen. Thre's no crown -- just a board acrross the top because there was existing ceiling crown that I didn't want to mess with. That's a Duet shade 1/2 down on the window.

jsk -- my late father-in-law had a Gibson like that!

I forgot to mention that my new car is tomato red.

I don't wear red much anymore. But back in the day, I had a gorgeous deep red Harve Bernard silk skirt suit when I worked in Manhattan. Perfect for those power meetings!

Our current house was painted with gold and red walls. The kitchen, family room and half bath were entirely red. The other rooms had red accent walls to go with the gold. My first impression was chinese restaurant. It was hideous.

My first car was a red chevy chevette in 1979. What a cheap piece of junk that was!

Jsk….I love your living room, it looks very inviting. that black chest is something special.

all the white in the room i think pairs well with the red.

    Feathers11 thanked Lyban zone 4

Thanks, lyban. The black chest is filled with some of DH's other collection - antique fountain pens. It's a good thing I don't collect anything!

And the thing behind that in the back right corner is an antique fountain pen display case that he bought at a pen show a few years ago. He did call me and send me pic to make sure I was OK with it (not the purchase but the having it on display somewhere). I wasn't thrilled, but I knew he wanted it. It's actually very attractive when filled with pens. He will fill it if we're having company but he doesn't like to leave them out because the room is very sunny. And it's right by windows on the porch and I think he worries about theft even though we have alarms.
