I really like the solar shades because it mutes the sun so you can see your computer screen but still allows you to see out though muted. It also allows you to move with the sun in different seasons. Some seasons high in the sky so you only need them to be part way down or fully down when the sun is lower and right in your face. I personally do not like having my back to a door so if it were my office I would be turning the desk to face the other window. You can add drapery side panels later to add colour if you want but for now I like your idea of the solar shades.

@Lorraine Leroux I also started thinking, maybe if I turned my desk arond/rearranged the furniture, I wouldn't have the same glare. (dependent if the back side of the desk is finished - though suppose one could shop for a new desk and leave the windows as is). But thanks for the affirmation on the roller shades - For the reasons you said, I like the idea, but its the exterior mount and having a valence covering the mechanicals where I've been struggling to find something I like.

If anyone has ever done the solar roller shades with outside mount and can share a picture that would be wonderful. Hard to find a lot of examples bc mostly people do inside mount.

Invite a Shade (not shady ☺️) company to come for a free estimate and can show you a computerized mock-up and take measurements, and install if you decide to go with them.

I agree, rearrange your furnishings. Your desk currently faces west or south given you concerns with the sun. Back desk away from window. Can we get pictures of all the walls?

If blinds don't work out well, try classic white sheer curtains on a curtain rod with rings. Add wands for pulling open and closed.

What a gorgeous office! Would an arrangement something like this work? (Not to scale, since we don't have dimensions. First option assumes you work alone, second assumes you need chairs for occasional visitors.) Still lets you look out those beautiful windows, but from far enough away to avoid most glare?

We have roller shades and an outside mount. The shade rolls into a box valance. Very clean looking and come in MANY colors! I’d take that desk and turn it counter clockwise so your back is to that wall and you look directly to ALL those windows! It’s a beautiful room but lacks interest. Your fur baby would love a chair or small sofa to cuddle into.
An area rug would warm it up too!

If the budget allows, what about exterior solar shades that are literally mounted outside? As in, on the exterior of your home. I have them because of sun glare into windows that open onto an expansive view that I did not want to distract from with window coverings of any kind.

We have a setup EXACTLY like that. We did plantation shutters.

Sure I can share a photo. Our setup is our family room so don't mind a bit of clutter...I will get them by this afternoon...We had the thick honeycomb shades on the windows prior to the shutters so you do need some depth. But from what i can see, your window sills are similar in depth to ours so i wouldn't think it'd be an issue. We started doing shutters on bedroom windows upstairs. LIked the look and did our whole first floor windows. Is there a way for me to message the photo to you?

I've had great success using bamboo (venetian) blinds. Besides looking great, a benefit is they can be down, but (slats) opened.

Consider moving the desk. How about away from the windows, centered to the corner between them.

Window blinds are for cheap apartments. Use real wood blinds (which are expensive and must be dusted) if blinds. Or bamboo or rattan roll-ups.

Another great alternative is shutters (real wood). Menards has a special order option to get shutters - they have louvers to adjust angle of light.

None of the above options are inexpensive. Good quality 100% cotton drapes can be costly also (check out ebay for pre-owned).

You can mount on the wood frame, so the 1" depth is not an issue.

I like Simply Natural’s idea of moving the desk I would not like my back to the door of the room. Drapes hung high with a pattern would add interest and solar shades underneath. This would add softness and texture to the room. I would definitely add a much larger rug, too. Good luck.

2” wooden or faux wood blinds. They come with side/front valances to attach for a finished look for outside mount. The 2” with the vanes in an up position block sun but can still have outside view.

I like the 4 inch and have them in my home. Great for when needed and light control.

Look up Hunter Douglas “Duet bottom up top down” shades. I use them in our bedroom windows along with STATIONARY side panels. Anywhere from sheer to black out. Clean lines, light weight. Inside or outside mount.

Roller shades & linen side panels

We have both shutters (all front street-facing windows) and see-through roller shades in a great room with a view that receives western sun which is blinding and hot in the summer. I like both for different reasons. The roller shades are just great because we can see out yet the glare is cut. They are very nice all year-round. Ours are inside mounted, so I've not experience on outside mounts. The shutters are nice, too....but they definitely darkened a room. The roller shades are Hunter Douglas and nearly 20yrs old...the shutters were custom made and installed. You may want to try sheer drapes to cut the glare, provide filtered light and add softness to your office. Installation would be easy with curtain rods ~ 6" below the ceiling.

I'm late to the party, but I vote for inside mount. I have a friend who has a narrow width inside mount, maybe 1/4 inch. She was able to buy blinds from Budget Blinds, that mount inside to that 1/4 inch. The blinds are 3/4 in and they do protrude about 1/2 inch but I think they look much better than an outside mount ever could.

Are those “bottom up/top down” blinds? They really allow a lot of flexibility for viewing!!
