I need a bit more info from you. Is the house staying as it is ? When you say rock do you mean gravel or large boulders ? Where do you live ?

My neighbor went no-grass a few years ago, replacing the grass with river rocks over landscape fabric.

Weeds come up through the landscape fabric, and also sprout in between the rocks where leaves have settled. They get a landscape company to clean it up a few times a year but it still looks bad most of the time. Not the low maintenance they hoped for.

My daughter did just that to her "new to her" house. It came out great! Different stones for different areas, larger boulders here and there and wood chips. Plants, trees planted in the stone. And I see your gorgeous tree that can be the star of the show. She has no grass at all. You must use garden edging to keep stones where they belong.

She is in FLA now, but I will text her and ask if she has some photos to share with you.

Oh, and before the stones went down, she installed (herself) soaker hoses to wrap around planting areas.

There was heavy landscape fabric installed under my neighbor's rocks. The weeds come through as if it wasn't even there. If you like the look of rocks, be prepared for some ongoing maintenance.

Your rocks under the right side window might not get that much weed, because that area is shaded and probably quite dry. But your lawn area will be weedier.

Do you want better foundation plantings? Or to remove the grass from your entire lawn and replace it with landscaping? Your house's cool mid-mod look would be better without shutters.

Depending on where you live it might be better to just do a garden that just grows and fills the spaces. Weeds are hard to get out from rocks. You could also get something that covers the ground well so the weeds are hidden. I really like pachysandra personally.

I guess they gave up last month so we get no answers now. IMO the house needs some work too so a bit more info would be helpful. BTW one little patch of grass is more trouble than is i worth . As for lanscape fabric you need the one that is meant for the job. I have gravel all over my yard not one weed the right landscape stuff used .

With landscape fabric, it really depends on what you climate and soil are. My crabapple drops seeds on my gravel. They sprout in the dirt that is dust, seeds, pollen, etc. Then, their roots get through the tiny holes that make the landscape fabric porous. Then, they grow, widening the holes. In a dryer environment with a lot less natural detritus, that might not happen. But I've used a lot of landscape fabric and the sole difference is how long it takes to fail. With deep gravel, the weeds sprout without the roots ever penetrating the fabric.
