What is your definition of update? Replacing everything? Budget?

How far are you willing to go with this update? Do you plan on replacing anything? painting anything? Give a bit more information. Do you have a budget?

No budget. Willing to replace anything and everything. Thanks!

What are your needs for your kitchen? How many people does it serve? What kind of cooking? What doesn’t work for you now? Do you/can you expand it, change walls, move plumbing, gas line, hood vent, hvac duct, lighting?

Where do those doors lead? I’m guessing white is to the garage? Are the pet dishes in your way?

Is it a complete gut job you have in mind? Precise information get's you more precise information. If you're redoing the kitchen completely, you need to provide a floor plan showing all dimensions including doors, windows, access to the room, etc. Also is the a style you prefer? or colour?

Do you use the table? Is there another eating area? Do you need more storage? recycling bins? The bones of your kitchen are good and I would keep them and concentrate on the table side of the kitchen. The only suggestions I would make for the kitchen side is to change the wine rack above the sink into something else (platter display, baskets etc) and to move the tv to the table side of the kitchen.

The table is used for only 2 people. More storage probably would be good. No recycling bins. I agree about the rack above the sink. It's probably a complete gut job

The white door is the garage. The other doors you see are the entryway closet. Just want more modern looking.

It might be time to re think the table and chairs. If seating 2 persons a more compact table chairs combo in a color other than black would provide more space. Additionally a repaint of the feature wall would give a lift. The blind is a wonderful material, but may be too busy to give a lighter spacious feel. Maybe going with a blind in a neutral shade tying in with walls would simplify the space.

First job is to declutter. If some items already have a ‘home’ in a drawer or cupboard put them away, all other items group in one spot so you can assess storage needs. Likewise, pull items out of stored areas and assess everyday, or occasional use (put those items aside). You may want to do this first.. Funny what you can find that has migrated to the deep, dark corners of the unknown in your kitchen.

Decluttering already makes a big difference. Give us some dimensions so we can see what can be done for the seating area...

Thank you! I will work on getting some dimensions

I think the cabinets are attractive. Sure they are "dated" but only because people now paint their cabs because they are made of MDF not real wood. The table looks cramped. If you only need to seat 2 people, I'd get a smaller table. One with a drop-leaf might work well, allowing you to pull it out when needed. I'm not keen on the hutch, but it's hard to see. It looks like you need more storage. Is there anywhere else you can steal storage space? Like putting seasonal stuff in the basement?

Thanks for the great ideas. I'll get some dimensions later. I agree with the idea about a leaf table

    Great improvement already.

The room will feel bigger if you try to make the eating side visually disappear:

    - Get a new drop leaf table the color of the walls or floor, instead of being the wood color of the cabinets. Try to get a pedestal drop leaf. Having one center leg instead of four legs helps the table feel more open and floating.

    - Better yet, could you get a slab of countertop mounted to the wall with brackets, no legs, and a fold up leaf?

    - Get new chairs that have a lower back and a color less pronounced than black.

Another trick to make the room appear more spacious is to paint all walls, ceiling, trim, and baseboards the same color. Your current baseboard color is like taking a highlighter to the perimeter of the room and defining how small it is. Erase that and the room will be perceived as bigger.

Say more about the hutch and if you want to keep it.

While waiting for your dimensions, here are some ideas. Your floor looks like it needs to have a grout refresh treatment so you can start with that. I would paint all the walls a creamy white. You can replace all cabinet hardware with brass. I suggest you remove the hutch on your cabinet, paint it black, and place a marble look quartz countertop on it. I'm showing a smaller table with 2 chars. You can hang a plug-in pendant above the table.

This may have already been asked -

Do you have a dining room also?

Hi. There is a dining room behind the wall by the table

Is the hutch your pantry or do you have a pantry closet?

The hutch looks like an antique hoosier cabinet, not something to just get rid of.

Working on getting dimensions. This is actually not my house! I'm helping my Mom and her boyfriend

Also, yes, they do have a pantry, I don't think it's visible in the pics. I think it's behind that wall that's plain

The dimensions are about 9 feet by 12 feet

Kelly what is the budget - looking at a full gut or just a tweak here and there?

If you want a gut you will have to supply a plan with every dimension (exact opening sizes and window location, etc). If the renovation is extensive it’s best to show the whole level floor plan with all adjacent spaces also dimensioned.

We never get to see the top of the cabinetry nor the stove elevation. More pics, dimensions, wishes all needed. What is your ceiling height? More storage can be attained with to the ceiling cabinetry. What is your kitchen table used for? Perhaps a counter that could double as a work space would work? Twp people can be accommodated more efficiently with a skinny counter against the wall. The hutch's footprint could be maximized for storage with a free standing taller pantry cabinet. I am getting a hint of the 'Tuscan" kitchen era. The decorative ??? over the sink could be removed for a lighter look. Your cabinets are attractive-- but the raised panel door design is out of favor. A lighter brighter look would be the more preferred, like the Shaker panel.

Thanks all. I will work on these questions. All helpful! There is no budget

It looks like the cabinet across from the fridge might still have some room for better storage. Also, you might consider a foldable dining table and chairs—it could help save space since the current set looks a bit bulky
