A colour--any colour except white or off white. Some years ago there was a movement to paint stripes of the same colour but different sheens.

It wouldn't look great to have just this wall papered.

If this was a true powder room, I'd go a bit bold in here with color or wallpaper (on all four walls). Due to the fact that this is regular bathroom (with a door that allows the toilet/shower to be used while someone uses the sink), I'd use art as suggested by Kendrah in her above comment. You could use a wall paint color that provides a bit more contrast from the color of the vanity/trim if you want - but the right art would work and look nice.

Get a piece of art and see it that solves the problem . I do not understand what you mean by PR before the shower and toilet . A pwder room has a toilet and a sink thats it .

Why settle for just artwork on the wall? This powder room has the potential to become something extraordinary.

Wallpaper is expensive, but paint isn't bad (if you want to change the wall color), and thrift stores are a great source for inexpensive art and/or frames. Look for wide, clean mats, if you can find them. If you don't like what's in the frame, you can usually replace the contents. This shows black and white Victorian bath/dressing scenes, but whatever you like will work. Frames can be interesting in themselves and wouldn't have to match. Sometimes I just hang the empty frames.

I love the ideas, however, you see this wall from the hall as you walk to it and I was wanting to make it more of a statement. Should my artwork be more dramatic?

@Sue Prudhomme …. then get a piece of art that you love looking at each time you walk down that hall. Can be higher end or not, something you love. Zillions of options online.

^ Exactly. We can't choose art for you. We can show size/shape/placement options, using colors/subjects that seem appropriate for the fraction of the room that we can see. We have no idea what the rest of the room looks like, much less the rest of the house, and we can't mind-read what you envision. The single photo provided doesn't say "drama" to me.

I have a large poster of this by Paul Klee in my powder room which is painted orange. I have heard new guest say " wow" and laugh. I love it.

Find something that speaks to you.

Expand your idea of art and see what you find that you (unexpectedly) love. I, for one, am crazy about this hilarious, horrifying poster. But I love it so much I am going to have it custom framed. Would something like this work for you?

We have some pretty out-there wall art. A "cool" teenage nephew once said "I didn't think people your age liked art like that."

If you are looking for art, I have found Etsy.com to be a nice resource. You can find all kinds of art there.

Art is very personal; so go with something that inspires you.

Since you are interested in bringing some drama into the space- you are very lucky that I showed up here. ( I am the drama queen. ;)

Seriously, though- another idea that could also up the drama in your space- could be to paint a design on the wall- using a stencil.

This stencil (below) I found recently. I love it ... and I can’t wait to use it somewhere! It’s a fleur de lis. When I saw your room, I thought of this one and went and found it in my cart. I think something like this- done in black- could be both elegant and striking in your space.

Start going to garage and yard sales. You will find a piece of art you love that is the right size for this wall (carry the dimensions with you). You can also repaint the room with stripes of a darker color. Wallpapering is definitely expensive so think outside the box for how to make the walls interesting.

If you like expensive wallpaper, a way to make it (relatively) affordable is to frame a large piece of it and use that as art.

I really like the stencil idea, and all the ideas that have been sent. These have been very helpful. The one thing I am so perplexed about is do I go with a softer artwork like many have sent or a darker artwork.

Go with artwork that you like. If you don't know what you like, start visiting museums, galleries, art fairs, flea markets, antique stores, thrift shops. Something somewhere will speak to you.

Or shorten the process by visiting museum shops online. You can order reproductions of artworks, or posters from exhibitions.

One great source of images in the public domain is the Library of Congress. May I recommend to your attention the posters created by the Works Progress Administration?

There are lots of places online where you can order reproductions of WPA posters, or vintage travel posters, which are also fun. If you have a good color printer and good paper, you can download and print from the Library of Congress for no more than the cost of your supplies and electricity.

You can order prints of various images from the New York Public Library Digital Collection (link), too.

Or frame a map, or some wrapping paper!

Isn't it fun (and beautiful) when things begin to come together.

I think you can go a little crazy in a bathroom. We are updating our basement bathroom and used a bright, crazy wallpaper to liven it up. Here’s a pic of the current status; the space isn’t completed yet. Good luck!
