Railing mounted on drywall half wall – design advice

We installed a metal railing on top of a drywall half wall. The client feels the railing looks awkward where it meets the drywall. Would you shorten the wall or redesign the railing connection?

I can't see that passing code in the US for sure . I do agree it is not attractive To me it does not look very sturdy either .I ove open staircases but that one is scary . What is the material for the steps? Maybe some way to incorporate that into the wall where the anchor is might look better.

Is the stair opening smaller than the stairs? Why is the railing so far from the edge of the stairs? You have to reach around a wall to grab the railing? The railing should be moved closer to the stairs. BUT more importantly why does the railing not follow the line of the stairs. You can not grab the railing by the time you hit the 4th stair as you go down the stairs.

    - agree that grabbing the railing is awkward at the top so I’d want a cleaner intersection (Not a pro but assuming the stairs will have wide stair treads installed)

Yikes! The staircase looks like an accident waiting to happen!

I do agree the whole thing is a mess maybe before someone dies you might want to get an actual staircase company to have alook and if this is the one you have get a new one

On the middle of that flight's guardrail, you can see a support that rests on a horizontal "strut" that extends out from the tread to accept that support. That same "strut" should be at the top or any support along any flight, it shouldn't be attached to the wall at all (especially with just a couple screws).

Hopefully the "struts" are adequate enough, but the pic doesn't look confident. Also it looks like 'L' braces were posthumously added at corners, so I'm not sure how sturdy this entire guardrail is to begin with.

Do you have any other pictures from different angles? I wouldn’t want the pony wall at all. Why isn’t their a railing there so it is all open and same material

That's either an emergency room visit waiting to happen or a trip to the mortuary. Go back to square one and build a staircase that is up to code and as safe as a staircase can be.

Terrifying - like in a horror movie

You are no asking the right question. The right question is who is the best staircase specialist you can call to design the correct staircase after you rip this one out.

The user has to lean into the stairwell to grasp on to the railing. Bad.

The gap between the railing and tread is gigantic. Bad.

The railing doesn't attach to the stairs, it has an L shaped attachment that moves the railing farther away from the stairs. Bad.

I can only assume you are awaiting another railing for the left side of the stairs, but what the heck does it attach to?

This is an insurer's nightmare. An inspector's nightmare. The family member of dead person at the bottom of the staircase's nightmare.

    Please enlist the proper assistance.

Unsafe and ugly. Pull it down.

One of the principals of the company is apparently a finish carpenter, so this surprises me.

Is this not just the metal base the wooden treads/stairs will be affixed ro? I don’t think thos is a finished product?

Where the railing hits the wall is the least of the problems. Just wait until the treads are installed and the client actually tries to use the railing.
