Lil sitting room project

last month

New 65” loveseat and matching ottoman are coming soon for our sitting room. I am over the cluttery feeling of the two chairs, etc…and no one ever sits here. I think we will get more use of the room now.

The chairs are going (to DS) and I am going to see if I can switch the desk aka table with an end table from the living room. (It will not fit here.)

The sofa and ottoman are not the colors shown here. This is the color, which doesn’t really look much like this IRL. It is lighter.

I have one new pillow. Woohoo! I need a new throw blanket too bc every room needs one!

The loveseat will be centered on the window, which means it will not be centered on the wall. Questions:

What would you do with end tables? Try to use them to somehow create more symmetry? *

How about art? The small items to the right of the window are already gone. I am trying to find another spot for the painting on the left. Would you all throw up if I did a gallery wall on either side of the window? Too cluttery when I said I was getting less cluttery?

Other thoughts welcome (except for ”getting a loveseat and ottoman is a stupid idea” bc that ship has sailed).

* Sorry I don’t have dimensions on hand, but there will be enough room for end tables, but not large ones. I could also just do one of the floor lamps on the right/smaller side, but that might look dumb?

Something like this lamp, which I just grabbed from the next room? The height is adjustable on this so it could go shorter.

Yes I think that helps a lot! I'd maybe go a touch lower with the lamp if possible, but I think this is an improvement.

Well it can’t be this lamp, bc she lives in the other room with her twin, but just an example.

One issue is that this room has no lighting other than lamps, so we can’t go too small.

I think 16” is too small. Current lamp is about 29”.

    Where is the library cart?

Library cart is back in its original spot, across the room.

This one is 24” and has a 3-way switch.

Sue, I like that the base on that one connects to the gold frame and the black library lamp.

It also references the reading lamp, but it doesn't do much visually, in a decor sense. It just provides light.

Well, providing light is job number one here.

I am not swooning over it, but so far it is the only one I’ve found that is around the right size and style and has a 3-way switch. Still looking. I hate ordering lamps online, but I did find an actual lamp store that is about 20 minutes from me, so I might check it out today or tomorrow. There is almost nowhere to buy a lamp locally any more! I guess I could also pop into TJ Maxx and see what they have.

Few more in the 24” range.

This is a dupe of a more expensive lamp I’ve always liked. It may be too wide/round.

I think your on to something, the tweaks are good! Plants always make thinks look nice, but can they actually thrive there? If not, I would remove them now before you base other decisions on that vignette. Ask me how i know this.

The shorter plant has been in that corner forever, it is happy there. The other one was getting too much light elsewhere, so we’ll see what happens here. Regardless, I am in agreement that the lamp on the left is a bit too tall (as I sit beside it now, looking up into the bulb). I am also not opposed to putting the library cart back where the plants are. We are plant people; I may need one for the library cart too.

I think so far I like my first lamp best, this one:

Wait, now I’m thinking I might like this with a cool lampshade (Pooky?)…

I too prefer 3 way lamps and I think they're harder to find lately. I wanted to mention that as for seeing lamps in person, if you have a Homegoods near you they are definitely worth looking at. It's hit or miss, but I was in one today that had a really nice and large assortment.

Also, Target and Walmart can have better than you might expect. and returns are certainly easy.

I believe that any lamp can become 3-way with a different switch and a 3- way bulb.

I like the latest one (glass) that you posted, Sue. The prior one seems a bit "conference room" to me.

Salon, I agree, Target online usually has a lot more that I expect.

That glass lamp base is very reasonable, I might just order it.

I went to two stores IRL today, found nothing. I am trying to be patient, which is not my usual mode.

I also have this lamp upstairs, which is silly but I might bring it down to see how it looks. Maybe with a different shade it would look less childish. I have a slight bunny fetish.

I’ve always wanted a bunny lamp but haven’t found the one. A coffeeshop nearby has a cutie that I’d like to steal. Enjoy him in your sitting room for springtime!

I love whimsy in a room -- especially a room you will use for reading, knitting etc. You have always done whimsy in the best ways so trust your eye. If not this bunny lamp, it could give you an idea of something else that would work well.

I also like the glass lamp.

    Oooh I like this one.

And this one, which is 2x the price.

I like glass lamps better when the do not have the metal rod down the center. I have two in the dining room and one in the kitchen (seating area-keeping room?).

I thought I loved the pottery lamp but now I think the shiny brass looks cheap.

I did find this one for about 1/2 price!

I always like those glass lamps in photos but in person im never wowed

    Different direction…

    I also have this pillow

    Love the color - salmon?

Well, Frontgate calls it Cinnamon. So, still food-related.

I think it works with the rug.

And I have a similar color in surrounding rooms.

I like "cinammon" better. This was my favorite lamp from the initial choices but I was unsure if you were trying to neutralize the space a bit. But that doesn't seem very on brand for you. And it will coordinate with your new spring wardrobe!

It was on sale but I got an even lower price by signing up for emails. (Which I’ll cancel now.) Ordered!

I showed it with a fun Pooky shade because reviews mentioned a dislike for the included shade. I’ll wait and see what I think when it arrives.

    What a sweetie 🥰

practical question - how will you keep it clean?

Have it treated with Microseal, that stuff is like armor.

I notice it has a texture, maybe it is a special fabric?

It is Crypton fabric, for one. And, I have a blanket covering the seat cushions.

Bugs is offended that you think he’s dirty.

While I would never malign Bugs, my dog produces oil in her coat (keeps her breed warm and dry) and is not allowed on furniture in part because of this. But I do notice that the front skirt of one of my sofas is looking a bit dirty from her leaning against it while laying on the floor. Smart move with blankets. Bugs is adorable and I love that he loves the sofa!

    last modified: 2 days ago

aha! Crypton! Have you used that before? I am curious, since I am drawn to light colors.

Please apologize to Bugs for me.

the front skirt of one of my sofas is looking a bit dirty from her leaning against it while laying on the floor.

Yup - same here. That is partly why I am the white duck cotton Slipcover Queen.

  • yesterday

When we had our English bulldogs, they would rub their faces along the bottom of the sofa after they ate. So charming. At our beach house, we have a slipcovered sofa that is still stained from that.

I don’t think I have anything else that is Crypton. It is very soft, like a chenille, so it doesn’t appear bulletproof. Our dogs are not really hard on the furniture, but with such a light color…

He is ”not allowed” on this light colored chair. Hm.

  • yesterday

Sue that dog is saying "Yeah, what are you gonna do about it?"

  • yesterday

^^ And follows up with, ”Put your phone down and go get me a snack”.

  • yesterday

He gets away with a lot because he’s so pretty.
