Staircase to Bottom Floor

last month

I am at a loss for what to do with the wall above the stairs. (Also, I do not plan on keeping the two tone walls. I want them painted the same colors). Our house is built into a hill and our main floor is the top floor. The staircase to the bottom floor is in my living room. I am thinking large scale art or mirrors on the walls. I would love a chandelier or some kind of pretty light over the staircase but would that look weird with the stairs in the corner of my living room?

I just don’t know how to style it.

I think a chandelier will look odd there since it will be at eye level amost when standing to go down stairs but you could aybe do a bit bigger art work on both walls to make it a bit more interesting those will mostly be seen as you enter the staircase annd also always from the main floor living space.. Then a nice piece at the bottom of the stairs I think hung on the sircase walls going down will look odd from the main floor.

From your photos, the only other art I see is the group of 3 right by the stairs. Is this accurate? Do you have a bunch more you’ve just not hung? Because with so much wall space without things on it, the stairs don’t look bare as is, they look in keeping with the rest of your room.

Large-scale art can work really well in stair areas because the vertical space helps it stand out. Another idea is a small gallery wall that follows the angle of the staircase. That tends to look very intentional and fills the space nicely without feeling empty.

@AiFL More art will be hung on the walls. The whole living room is a work in progress.

Our staircase was more open than yours but we arraigned art to create a gallery. 17 feet of height.

    A couple of options:

Art on both stairwell walls (photography here, of outdoor stairways on Greek islands), three existing frames moved to chair corner to avoid competing with stairwell art.

Art on one stair wall only (here an Asian scroll extending down into the stairwell), other Asian art near corner chairs.

Both photos show a larger rug to expand the seating area visually, an ottoman with the corner chairs, and beams and return air vent painted the wall color.

I like the second (livelier) one myself.

@BeverlyFLADeziner 's design makes a lot of visual sense. Instead of the staircase feeling like a pit, it just feels like the other side of your doorway. I'd paint the railing the same color as the walls and remove the trim piece in the stairwell that divides it in half.

I love your wall of three pictures. The composition of it is striking and the scale is spot on, which is great, but also raises the bar for whatever else you hang. I'd consider picture lighting above the "Beverly" photos too to bring continuity and cohesion to the stairwell art and make it feel part of the living room.
