Foyer Help White Oak?????

last month

Hi, I want to install wood stairs in place of carpet, replacing them with white oak treads, posts, and railing with a darker birch color floor. Does that work, or any ideas how to update the space. See the before and rendering after photo from Chatgpt. Thank you!

yes. it's totally doable and looks good.

have you thought about a budget? off the top of my head, i'm going to say at least 10K

plus you have all that frame molding on the wall. will you be removing that, patching and painting? It's too traditional looking for the newer style of staircase you want. You could leave the paneling and upgrade the trim work and top molding to modernize it

This wrought Iron railing will prob cost 5-7K just for it alone.

the wood newel posts are cheaper, and single wrought iron balusters would bring down the cost.

White oak is more than red oak.

If you price out white oak treads, they could be $50-75 a piece.

then you have the railing. and the demo and the install.

if you have the money, yes, the white oak looks nice.

How do you think it will look next to your floor?

And do you plan on painting the walls? that current color you have isn't the best choice w/the white oak look and style.

Hi Beth, Thank you for the message. I have everything quoted and ready to go, but some friends and family say I should stick with the same color railing, treads, and posts as the floor color which is birch hardwood flooring. Help! LOL

take a look at this one

cheaper options that work w/what you have. If you can DIY, you can install your own treads and stain or paint them.

    Thank you Beth, great ideas!

Will you EVER be changing that flooring? if the answer is NO, then a darker stain on a cheaper wood such as red oak might be a better option.

these are all very nice, darker options.

    Which do you like best?

Molding on the wall is staying. We are painting the wall SW agreeable gray.

Option 4. I wouldn’t use gray walls. The white walls look fresh.

Beth, we do not plan on replacing the floor as its pretty new. Should I go with these colors? Do you like the metal balusters in the photo? Any changes you would recommend before I place my order with stair supply company?

Option 2 or 4 no to grey walls

option 2 is nicest w/your floors. you could do a shade lighter. it doesn't have to match exactly. as long as the brown stain is in the same tonal family, going lighter is fine. obviously you would do a few test samples on the exact wood you're getting before deciding.

I also like the larger newel post, but nothing too ornate.

I like the black wrought iron w/the darker wood. however, to save money you could do wood balusters (in the simple square) and paint them black or a dark espresso. depends on your budget.

    these show diff baluster options

another option is painting the risers.

this one looks nice w/your floors, but I think it's a little too 'cold'. prob the gray wall paint

What gray do you think you want and why?

to warm it up, you could do a sisal or jute runner

and I'm partial to this antelope runner.

they have it in black too.

this would look so nice w/the darker wood tones and a white wall

dark Navy. with similar wall trim like you have

    taupe

a foyer rug in this print is gorgeous

Hi Beth,Thank you for all the great ideas. The metal balisters are only $4.54 a piece so cheap enough. I was going to use agreeable gray as this room connects to my kitchen and family room which has the same paint color. I am open to ideas for paint colors as well.

hold off on the paint until the stairs are done. then you can submit another few pics w/some samples painted on the wall.

^^^^Beth has provided you with great advice!

Lori, can you post photos of #2 and #4 side by side? I'm drawn to how #4 brings 'lightness' to the stair area but it might not be the best fit for the rest of your home. #2 seems more contemporary, #4 more traditional.

Are they removing the existing treads? You cannot just pull carpet and install new wood treads as you will throw off the rise and the run and every step has to be identical to maintain safety and building code.

I think if you got rid of the strange molding on the side of the stairs, the carpet and the mustard color, it will look great with the existing railing.

This is the final design. Help with paint colors please for the wall. Thanks!

That looks great, but I would rethink the grey walls.

I think you could choose a lot of diff combos than the blue gray in your photo.

for example, here's a foyer similar to yours and it's BM Sea Salt. (not SW sea salt!)

    other colors in that realm:

I put in some darker trim colors because you could do the doors or casing in a contrast tone

sultry blues look amazing w/brown so does charcoal and darker iron tones.

Here's the SW 2026 colors of the year

If you really want to go a little diff, the cream and the auburn would look amazing w/that wood

khaki is the color of the year, so it's paired here w/complementary shades

Pair these with a nice area rug, some type of chandelier, maybe some type of table and decor,,

    and voila! done

Please- no more grey- grey is out, dreary, and was way overdone 10 years ago.
