Resin-coated soapstone questions

last month

My husband and I fell in love with a soapstone earlier this week from (as far as we know) a reputable stone dealer in Michigan. But it was specifically labeled as being coated with resin. In addition, it had scratches that were rough and oddly tan-colored - and didn't change appearance with moisture.

Any idea what the heck is going on with this? It seems like such a bad idea, and if we try to have the resin removed it might completely change the look. But keeping the resin means being stuck with whatever maintenance it requires, with none of the inherent benefits of soapstone.

Any insight from those familiar with soapstone would be appreciated.
