What does the new floor tile look like?

I'm not a big fan of grid looking floors. I've never had square floor tiles in any room (I have wood floors throughout my house, including powder room - and have tile only in laundry/mudroom + three bathrooms upstairs). However, based upon rooms that I've seen that have square floor tiles, I think that diagonally installed look nicer + make rooms look larger. However, my understanding is that it will be more expensive to install on a diagonal due to more $ for labor + extra tile needed for all the cuts that will need to be made.

I also think that when the grout isn't darker (like in above photo), a grid install looks fine because the grid isn't so obvious.

Also, if the room will have "busier" furnishings/art/etc. - a diagonally tiled floor may be too busy.

Diagonal tile installation was populat in the 80s. So if you want your home to appear instantly dated, go for it.

If I were to use a 24 x 24 tile I'd first make sure the tile was RECTIFIED so my install could use the very smallest joint spacing possible so the floor looked monolithic. I would NOT use a contrasting grout color but one that matched the tile.
