Advice decorating with this color wood trim & wood floor

I am purchasing this house and will be putting my 7 foot black satin Steinway grand piano in this room. Not sure how to shoehorn a living area in also, as well as comfortable TV watching.

I actually love the color of the stain on the wood floor in a few other rooms, and it does seem similar to the trim and fireplace stain color, so I hope to add more wood flooring that matches the best I can.

I think the chair rail is not necessarily working, but I was thinking of adding maybe a shimmery blue color, (maybe Benjamin Moore Brittany Blue) on the lower section and perhaps a scenic wallpaper above to make it seem more like a historic home.

I like the idea of adding picture rail usually, since I love to move my art around a lot, but I would possibly have to disguise it on the wall or remove the chair rail if I do, I guess.

I also think something looks off about the arrangement of the multiple doors and that Palladian window on top, they are facing the backyard and patio, but it is a brick exterior, so I am not going to change it. How could I dress the windows and doors to make it look less awkward?

Measurements to come…

I usually am giving advice, but this room has got me puzzled with the piano placement and all of the doors. (Total of 5, and two of them doubles!)

Anything you suggest would be interesting to me, and lighting etc, would be good too.

The room faces southeast, in North Carolina, and there are walls of trees about 50 or 100 feet from the house on all sides, but not sure if that helps with sun in the summer.

I forgot to add that I tend to like cool colors on walls, and I also love mixing jewel tones. I have a mustard/gold velvet slipcovered sofa, I would like to keep when I move plus matching chair that could go in another room as it is pretty bulky.

To make a good arrangement, you need a measured floor plan, including windows and doors.

Grand piano questions: Does the piano require placement near an interior wall? It looks like the two balconies and many doors will funnel sound throughout the house. Is that what you want? Or would you prefer to have the piano in a separate music room that can be closed off for sound control?

Wow….not a fan of the multi planed glass; the view is great and plain glass would be a welcome improvement. Really wonderful space! And you are removing the carpet? Find a rug with colors you love and go from there.

@Apple_Pie_order Here’s the floor plan. Unfortunately, the person measuring failed to put in the door measurements, but this is the room. I am a musician, and there is no other room for the piano, but I am also possibly the only occupant, so little need for sound control. Plus, with this size instrument, one does not want a small room.
@ShadyWillowFarm I plan to put in wood flooring matching the wood as closely as possible, and seldom have area rugs, as I hate vacuuming! But I may get something silvery blue.
I would really love to have some layout suggestions.

I would either remove that gold fireplace screen, or DIY it in a matte black

i'm guessing that green carpet is going?

with the black piano, I'd go dramatic and paint out that brick black (if leaving all that wood)

You could also tile right over that brick w/stone or ceramic or whatever you like

and please, this ceiling fan needs to head back to 1991. That's a whole lot of wood trim. You could remove the chair rail and just paint.

the problem w/all of that wood trim is is was done 35 years ago. ditto the ballusters. it dates the entire room.

painting out all of that dated trim a crisp white, including the doors and windows, gets this

(and a nice chandelier instead of that 40 yr old fan!)

you could also remove those dated spindles and replace w/wrought iron or square balusters painted black or white.

again, a nice light, a large area rug to absorb some sound,

I think painting the door trim and window trim a glossy black, painting the brick in the fireplace black, and the rest white would look great.

you could add some board and batten wainscot (or frame trim wainscot) and just update the top wood rail. here's the example:

if you like a bit more boho, natural elements:

since your walls are so tall, you could do a ton of things.

    Here's the blue you mentioned

soft gray blue w/creamy trim and black trim windows

    black fireplace, wood trim,

this room has great potential. the carpet and wood trim/stair railing, fireplace surround, fan need to be redone!

same angle (you don't have the double windows)

This arched window, i'd replace w/these other windows you see above.

Or, if you can swing it, remove that window and get all new, larger doors

photoshopped here w/white doors..and windows above it. to give you an idea

personally w/the black Steinway, I'd go dramatic w/black paint, leather, the textures in the other Boho picture,

@Beth H. Wow! That is a wonderful collection of inspiration photos, thank you! I was worried about the black piano not working with blue, so it was nice to see that particular photo. And just this evening, I took this picture in a furniture store, wondering how much black I can get away with in a room that is the only living area in the house, so your comments and photos there are spot on. I think I would still like wood pieces in the room even though I will be adding darker wood flooring too.

Unfortunately, I won’t be altering the openings. As I said in my post, there is a brick exterior, and it would be too costly and also delay my being able to move in. But one can dream anyway!

Thanks for info. Since you are a musician, the piano needs the best appropriate location: away from fireplace and exterior walls. It should also not block doors. That means the only place it can go is in the lower left corner of the floor plan as shown. As a test, you can cut some foamcore boards and tape together to match its 7 foot outline plus the bench, then move them around to get the orientation right. You could also build yourself a piano-shaped mound of cardboard boxes. You are probably having it moved professionally, so it's a good idea to know what you want before the piano is delivered. It's okay to have the piano movers come back in a month or two if you settle on a better orientation.

Edited to add: an inflatable queen mattress (60" by 80") is almost the size of a 7 foot Steinway grand piano. You could get an inflatable queen mattress and move it around to test locations and orientation.

@apple_pie-order yes I actually have a cutout from Steinway, and I agree the piano has to go in that lower left corner to be away from the windows in the fireplace. The problem is we can’t seem to get the rest of the room set up to be a living room that way. The only thing I’ve come up with so far is on an 8 x 11 carpet between the piano and the exterior wall I could Put my sofa and two chairs facing Television with a coffee table between them. I just don’t know what to do with the area in front of the fireplace.

Steinway's cutout is perfect. I'm sure they deal with placement questions a lot.

In a big room like this, people often set up two conversation areas. Your sofa and tv area would be fine. You could add a couple upholstered swivel chairs in front of the fireplace. They could swivel to face the piano when you are playing or the fireplace when it's quiet.

If you’d like help regarding any of the above choices, providing a picture of your couch and describing the look you are after will be needed.

@Maureen Here is my Farlov sofa. It is 84” long and quite deep. I also have the chair but as it is bulky might put it in another room, plus the sofa has an additional slipcover in a textured white fabric, although I love the velvet, and jewel tones. I also experimented with putting near black under the chair rail in a photo., and am considering maybe paneling the entire far wall where all those doors lead to the outside, or maybe putting wood on the ceiling. I would love to add some deep olives and turquoise colors or as I said, maybe a mural wallpaper of trees above the chair rail.

In seeing your pictures and your ideas:

I’d hold off addressing the walls/ceiling until room is furnished and decorated. It’s a big space and a lot can go wrong fast. Instead, consider the impact of vibrant, colorful accessories. Ignore the style of room below, but I wanted to show the impact of your stated colors and think it would be a stunning backdrop for your piano. If it were me, I’d remove the chair rail and paint a warm cream (but my style is not eclectic).

I like the all white walls and trim photos posted, it downplays the triangular peaks to open up the space visually. I like the idea of black spindles.

Paint the fireplace wood black or stain Ebony to complement the piano.

Bring in your color in furnishings.
