I have 1 rose coming from them - used up a gift card that I had. Can't wait to see how it looks! I ordered Rosanna, a beautiful coral climber.

Vaporvac, thank you. We had long overdue rain yesterday and I didn’t get mine planted. I plan on planting them today.

Bellarosa, The picture of Rosanna is beautiful on the website. I can’t wait to see your pictures of Rosanna this year!

Where is Lakeview Roses located? Your rose looks great, Kentucky. Diane

Diane, thank you. Lakeview Roses is in Canada on Niagara Drive. Palatine recommended them and another company for roses. I thought I would give them a try.

Thanks for that interesting info, Kentucky. I had no idea they were in Canada. I'll be checking them out. Diane

Wow. Things sure have changed since the demise of Pickering.

Curious how much you paid for those roses. They don't look too good to me. No offense.

Susan, they were $134.90 total. Yes, when I unpacked them, your observation was what I had. I thought not Palatine quality, few canes and skinny, not perky green, etc. Then I told myself to wait and see how they perform.

I have been following this discussion with interest.

Was it susan or paul who first observed the emperor has no clothes? I never knew Pickering, so I wasn’t sure what to make of his comment.

I’m seeing now that susan liked Paul’s comment. So I suspect the answer

    to my question is: Paul.

Kentucky, I’d suggest calling customer service and sharing your concerns about those roses. It may be quite a challenge to bring them back, in my opinion.

P.S. David Austin Roses told me they’ve started shipping to my zone, and I’m supposed to receive mine mid to late April. Really? That feels quite late—some of my roses have already formed buds.

I have a bad feeling about this upcoming delivery.

kentucky rose: when you contact LR, feel free to use my photo(s) from:

To be completely fair: some of that $134 is attribuable to just needing to clear the border. But still …

elenazone6 -- If it makes you feel any better, I got that same "we're shipping to your zone now" email from DA on March 21. It said they'd be shipping to my zone over the next four weeks, but in actuality, my order shipped four days later (I'm in 7b). So it's possible yours may go out quickly now that you've gotten that initial email.

The canes were trimmed significantly shorter than they were last year, as I think someone on this forum (was it Sultry?) mentioned, helping them to fit into the smaller boxes. The Sharifa Asma I received was pretty wonky looking, with one side cane broken off and only two main canes going off in the same direction. I've had lots of trouble hydrating it, and am experiencing significant browning. The Munstead Wood they sent looks just fine. It has nice healthy canes coming out from all around the crown, and a much more robust root system than SA.

While trying to learn something about Pickering, I came across this:

Connection to Palatine Roses: While not a direct offshoot of Pickering, Lakeview Roses has hired staff from Palatine Roses, another renowned Canadian rose retailer that closed its business, specifically employing a former Palatine staff member as a rose consultant.

I also found multiple old glowing comments about Pickering on this forum. So now I understand what Paul meant.

Shipping bare roots this late just doesn’t make sense. Vendors are creating problems for themselves — weak plants, replacements, disappointed customers.

I’ve had poor results with David Austin Roses mail orders more than once. Every year I tell myself “never again”… and yet.

At the same time, roses I planted from April & Ashley last November are already far ahead — strong, established, and actually growing like they should.

    It’s honestly not even comparable.

I think there’s a big misconception in the U.S. about timing. By the time these late shipments arrive, the season has already started. The plants come stressed and behind from day one.

    Timing is everything.

I grow a lot of HT's (Nice bouquets), so a company from Canada that has HT's, draws my attention. I'm looking REAL hard at Devotion. The cold hardy part is what hooked me. I'll be ordering from them next year. Finding good on line nursery's is tough. Only one way to find out.

Ken, Bellarosa is getting one and hopefully her bare root will be better.

Kentucky---I grow a lot of roses from Wisconson Roses. You know, the bump on a stick? I'm hoping for good bud eyes on good multiflora. If I can grow Steves roses, I'm pretty sure I'll have good luck with Lakeview Roses. I'll know for sure next spring.

Kentucky, a couple of things I noticed about your bare roots: 1) Few and small canes... they look more like $10 body bag roses. The front two have long roots, but the one at the top left looks to have roots chopped to 3 inches. Which brings me to... 2) I was confused in your pic because it looked like there were three bare roots pictured with three shanks, but only two sets of canes. The bare root at the bottom left looks to have a shank and roots but no canes (?). 3) The hideously long shank (especially the one on the right) isn't typical for roses on multiflora. That's more common now in the past 10 years with roses on Dr. Huey, particularly from Weeks and DA.

Palatine was a really good company, but Pickering was incredible. I ordered from Pickering from the late 90s until they closed.

Ken, I've grown a lot of maidens from Steve at Wisconsisn roses, but Kentucky didn't buy maidens. Totally different thing.

    Susan,

Those roses in Kentucky's photo are two (2), Poseidons, according to the initial unboxing report.

Yes, it’s just 2 Poseidons. Here’s another picture that’s similar to the other one though.

The canes are skinny. I really appreciate everyone’s input!

I understand that Kentucky said that these are two Poseidons. But surely someone else notices the weirdness of the (I guess it's one rose) on the left that has a shank with some short roots, and then another shank below? It's quite visible in both pics. Come on, I can't be the only one that sees this. I understand that you already planted these, but I sure wish you'd taken a pic of the two separate roses, or could maybe explain what you saw regarding what I see in the pics :-D

Susan, I wished I had taken pictures of each one by itself, too. Here’s a picture that I cropped of the above picture to show the area you maybe referencing. I vaguely remember thinking ”are some of these roots (higher up, hairy) feeder roots already?

Kentucky... thanks so much, the ultra close up pic solved my question. Although my next question is what in the world is going on with the root on the rose on the left? I've never seen anything like that in my 29 years of being a rose maniac :-D

    Kentucky,

I believe the numerous roots coming out of the sharks' sides is an asset. They will be closer to the soil surface in a more aerobic environment where in theory they will access nutrients more quickly than the roots emerging from the shanks' lower ends.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that these two roses will grow like gangbusters and allay all your concerns. We just don't know what pent up energy that they have within them. Let's see, keeping hope foremost.

    Moses.

Update on my 2 Poseidon bare roots from Lakeview Roses. The bushes are growing exceptionally well and blooming. All is impressive and I would not hesitate to order from them again.

    Looks good.

Moses should reconsider his aversion to betting, if it involves roses. Then again, no one stood up to bet against him on this.
