I like the tile. If you like how it looks with the decor in the room and think it works with the style of the house it would be a fun change. Slate, without the decorative tile, looks like it would work too and would more neutral.
And you're right, the layout of the patterned tile could be very tricky.

I like the idea, and maybe it’s just the combo of cream paint against these pariricular tiles that I find jarring, but maybe look for slightly toned down colorful?

I have done this a few times with fireplaces in various homes. Most of the time I have regretted it. The first time I did it, I used tumbled marble, that dated fast! In another instance I really regretted it, as 10 years in I no longer liked the tile colorway and I wanted to redo the room but that element caused issues. I have done it at the beachhouse with antique Delft tiles, too. I still like it but not sure I'd do that again, either.

All of this is to say it is the most difficult thing to change. I would bring in the pattern and colors you like with some other element.

It is a handsome fireplace, can the tv go somewhere else so the fireplace can shine?

Yes, now that I'm seeing it here, I'm leaning green again. It feels more adaptable than the floral tile.

Not too long ago I was looking for fireplace tile. I decided to do a marble slab for the surround instead of tile, and for the floor I used a solid blue, not as pretty as that green but similar pattern.

Thanks, Sue, and that's a beautiful blue. I plan on that pattern for the floor, as well, because my wood runs like yours does. A horizontal subway pattern would look odd.

To me, green is a neutral so you can carry it through many decor iterations in the future!

@Feathers11 Before I saw that you will do the tiling yourself, I was going to suggest stenciling a design on the tile. Relatively easy to change when you tire of it. Chiping out old tile wouldn't be the worst when you are ready for a change either.

I also love the green. The patterned tile was very pretty too. I would skip having a tile border. I think it makes the FP look smaller.

I'd love to, Bunny! In a former life, I was married to someone who worked in the architectural stone world, and I got my hands on some gorgeous tiles. An expert tile layer taught me the basics. I find it a very satisfying process. I won't attempt complicated jobs, but a fireplace is rather easy, as will be my mudroom.

Czarinalex, I agree, and that floral tile isn't large enough to *not* have a border.

If it's a weekend pproject for you, then I would do whatever your heart desires, and probably use pattern.

Have you considered a Frame TV?

I love black slate, but that is the original 1965 tile in my foyer and I have always liked it, It is the chunky, but it comes in smooth.

To @Feathers11: I just came across your thread and thought it would be great if you could add "fireplaces" to your topics. I love your cream-and-green color combo options and think it will pair well with the brown in your room (rug, floor, and the sofa "peeking out" in your picture).

The green chevron tile is lovely! I would consider it neutral and easy to decorate around.

Mtn, yes, but this current tv is fine. When the time comes that I need a new tv, I will go the Frame route. It's something I will consider, because the tv is "off" much more than it is "on."

Sherry, I love, love, love your black slate. During a househunting excursion in my early 30s, a realtor showed me a poorly maintained house that had a slate entry just like yours. I almost pulled the plug on it, just for that slate. It was gorgeous, and I think it was a 1950s house, iirc.

I like the blue pattern and the dark green. I do not think I like the blue painted wood.

@Feathers11 would you mind sharing what tile it is? We are at the very beginning of a bathroom remodel and I'm thinking dark green/moody (it's my son's bathroom) and that is exactly what I have pictured in my head. I need to show DH some actual tiles to get him on board.

It's a really beautiful tile in person--a sort of earth-toned green tile with just the right amount of variance in color.
