Question, is it an antique? Referring to your 4th poll. How old? If so, you might want to accessorize it with lighter colored objects. It appears that you have a lot of dark colored glassware, mugs, etc in there.

Try some peel and stick wallpaper instead of paint. It can be removed if you want to change it.

I can see making it lighter. I would make false walls and paint them or wall paper but for sure not to match your rooms' walls!!!!

K. I don’t know how old it is but the hinges are made of wood. So I always assumed it was antique.

Found a similar one on ebay dated 1930’s. Priced at $1300.

I’ve used foam board (painted or wallpapered) then cut to size & placed in the back of shelving before when I wanted a change up but didn’t want to commit - an inexpensive and fun project and doesnt impact the original finish, which is nice

I'd have it appraised before you do anything to it. You can then make a decision about what to do to it.

I think if you care about the antique value you clean it maybe oil it or wax it and be done. If you love it but not care about the antique part then paint it . IMO thingsin your home should reflect what you love and honestly the value is how it works for you. The foam bord idea will make the inside work but the exterior still looks pretty used so a good cleaning would not hurt. I have used pieces like that , that clients have and cherish but not with the decor they love , and used them for a walk in closet for storage of many different items to keep the value .

What a cool cabinet! I 100% agree with Patricia. Clean it up and treaasure it. I also really like the foam board idea to lighten the inside and show off that beautiful glassware and the interesting shape of the cutout.

That's a simple, inexpensive and non intrusive solution.

I did it. I painted. (and cleaned and oil soaped.) I am a ”keep the beautiful wood” type person in general, but this piece just needed lightening up. I heard you about styling as a living room vs dining room thing. Here is what I have so far. I shopped the house and I am still changing pieces.

Another option is to strip and re-stain the cabinet in a lighter tone. It's more work than repainting walls, but I prefer stripping and staining to painting. Don't ask me why.

It looks very nice with the inside painted white. However, I'm not loving those items on top, it doesn't need anything there. Also the items on the shelves look kind of haphazard. Do you have a more cohesive collection you can place there? Like blue and white porcelain, a collection of similar plates? Or all glass items?

Thanks, Diana. I tried the glass plate inside and it didnt read with no light behind it. I also tried my pewter mug and stemware collection. Looked like a display in Old Sturbridge Village. I am still curating the collection. I do hve a collection of red serveware. But I felt like they looked to kitchen-y. I will keep curating.

I sure wish you had not painted that inside white but if you love it awesome.

Patricia, my Mother is spinning in her grave knowing I hand painted wood furniture. I do get it. But I like the result. Now I just want it to look balanced and purposeful. Honestly, I almost gave it away. But it holds memories.

^love that idea - I could also see a collection of ironstone or McCoy dishes in there - I think I would want the displayed items to connect somehow but that's a me thing

Funny follow up. I had a friend over yesterday. The first thing she said when she came into the house was, ”Oh! I love your hutch!” 😁

Well, there you go. What i have learned, is do what you like because who knows what tomorrow brings! Keep looking and shopping on house. You can always change up to fit the seasons too!

I think the shape of the opening is nicely highlighted with the white paint and should only have one striking shaped piece per shelf…to celebrate the beauty of the simplicity of t.he piece

Even the shadow is interesting..

However the art next to it could add more to the scenario..if it was maybe three stacked smaller pieces that will reflect the age of the cabinet
