Light fixture for small hallway and stairs

I have a very small upstairs hallway. I have a straigt staircase and there is no way to add lighting above the stairs. So, the fixture that illuminates the hallway, also has to light the staircase. The hallway is narrow also, so the fixture cannot be wider than 14", but I'm not sure about wattage. I've seen lights that use 2-40w bulbs, as well as some that use 2-100w. They are all dimmable but how many watts would work? The light that I'll be replacing has 3-40w candelabra bulbs. It provides an adequate amount of light, though something a little brighter wouldn't be bad.
