Furnishing a tiny space

last month

A friend of mine just got low income senior housing. They have been living in other people's homes for 10-15 years - renting a bedroom, so they don't have much furniture. The space is 484 sq ft. The apartment is a mirror image of the floorplan below.

Furniture she owns:

Double bed, nightstand, low dresser with mirror.

Small 2 person table, rectangular, 2 dining chairs.

1 large recliner , 2 end tables.

I gave her the recliner since I didn't need it and she loves sitting in it. Fits her well and she spends a good portion of her days sitting and watching TV and needs her feet to be elevated. Big for the space but functions well for her.

Needs a tv and tv stand and seating for 2 guests. TV does not need to be huge, but large enough for her to see the menu or program guides. I have a 65" and she can see that without any issues and it is further away - 20' living room vs 11'.

Would love to hear others ideas on where to place the recliner, tv and what other seating to purchase along with recommended tv size. Any great storage ideas are also welcome.

The flooring is light colored linoleum and the walls are white. She is not allowed to paint. I am thinking about possibly getting a couple of area rugs, but she has some vertigo and balance issues, so I am hesitant. Might be better off getting a carpet that covers the entire bedroom floor and using a transition strip at the door.

Winters are cold here, so thinking carpet would be warmer on her feet.

The floorplan doesn't show it, but the countertops are continuous in the kitchen with the exception of the small wall space in front of the refrigerator. Dining table needs to fit in the living room.

Some aolutions we have used. A sideboard or dresser for the TV to sit on gives storage space. The kitchen is tiny. Purchase a free standing trash can holder that keeps trash neat, but also provides n additional surface close to the kitchen. Maybe to sit a toaster on, or drop her purse by the door.

Going with the red chair for inspiration and liking the way the furniture is placed on the floor plan. All furniture is affordable and from Wayfair.

A two seater sofa, with the two end tables she has.

    Small rug under the sofa.

Any one of these etsy (very affordable) pillows that has red trim and would work with art of sofa.

Warm, cozy, easy on, slippers with a no slip sole.

Corner t v console with storage

And a pop-up coffee table that serves a lot of purposes.

Love the idea of the freestanding trash can. I was thinking that she will need something that the microwave could sit on. This may be a solution. (does not come with a builtin microwave).

I need to measure the space beyond the fridge door opening to see what will fit in that space.

with the boldness of the recliner, keep the other furnishings light, even painted.

Forget the rugs on the floor with tripping potential. Invest in a good fitting pair of slippers.

Mount the TV on the wall across from the recliner

low back swivel chairs for guests. Get only what you NEED and will use, clutter is clutter that no age needs.

Congratulations to your friend on her new place. How exciting for her. Not sure how the fridge is positioned but if it is facing the living room, I would turn it to make a galley kitchen. She could then add shelving with a counter beside it.

A large carpet is an absolute. That floor is horrid for older joints. The more of that tile you can cover with one rug the better--particularly as a lot of small carpets can be tripping hazards.

    @Kendrah

Thank you for providing me the same feedback I give others all the time. Move in, wait and see what you really need. Funny when you are in the midst of things how you forget the right things to do and just want to get things done!

I have a set of 4 chairs that went to a gaming table (Upholstered with playing card fabric) in my basement. Comfortable, but not pretty. I told her I will bring one over to her place until we find something nice.

I also have 2 family members who are selling their homes and moving late summer. They may have some quality furnishings that can't go with them. (downsizing)

@ Lyn Nielson - Agree, clutter is to be avoided. Can be hard when the space is so small to manage to store even just the things you need without things looking cluttered.

Agree with both you and @arcy_gw on the area rugs - I will look for a large carpet for the bedroom that covers the whole space or close to the entire space.

I don't think we can mount the TV. I can ask, but it is a public housing apartment with concrete walls. Probably not allowed to permanently attach anything.

@ Expobaby - fridge can't be moved - countertop extends across 2 sides ending with the fridge facing the LR.

Keep the good art! Make it fit. It represents a lifetime of memories.

Anyone have good ideas on how to make the storage just inside the door useful. It is so deep, but not wide very wide. I was thinking of stacking shelves with totes in back for off season clothing or a few holiday decorations and files or things she wants to keep but doesn't need displayed and a lower shelving unit on wheels in the front. (5 ft deep and 3 1/2 ft wide)

On wheels is a good idea. Pulling storage from behind hanging clothes is a pita.

Too bad about the fridge. My daughter had a fridge like that and all we did was turn so it actually just stayed in the same place just faced another direction.
