Before you make a decision about the ceiling, I'd make sure I had all the other elements for the room.

• The room needs an area rug to anchor it
• The sofa and lounge chairs are positioned too far away from the fireplace not leaving enough room for the dining area. Move the sofa about 2 feet closer to the fireplace.
• The windows need drapery panels
• The back wall needs a large artwork
• Your chandelier should be mounted about 36" above the table top. Yours is mounted too high in the room.

Contrasting paint on the ceiling is always an option instead of wood.

I wouldn’t, your pups appear to like things just the way they are.,lol. Echoing pretty much of what Beverly suggested, the lack of a rug ( you probably need something washable considering your dogs ) & the furniture placement were two things I noticed first.

in the process of remodeling so yes, drapery, lighting and a rug are going to be changed. But, we just feel strongly about having a wood element. Just not sure how to incorporate it

you could add a beam for the ending point, BUT... are you sure your room can handle the darkening feeling of adding T&G to the ceiling?

It will darken the room feel, make the feeling feel lower, and you really need more than a standard 7.5 or 8ft. ceiling height to consider adding it.

Unless you plan to paint it white.

I agree with warming up the room with a wood element, but would try other options before committing to a T&G ceiling. Better suited for a Den, or room that you want to feel cozy and darker.

A test would be to paint the ceiling where you plan to add the T&G a medium tone brown color (similar to the wood tone you plan to use). If you love the result, great, do it.

If not, just repaint the ceiling white.

You don't have a good, or logical, start and end point, so it will never look quite right.

The ceiling is too low for wood to be up there. Lots of other ways to add the warmth of wood in this room.

Maybe create an interesting ceiling feature using wood over the kitchen or the dining area. I'd suggest getting advice from a local design professional as this can go very wrong, very fast. Here's a few ideas:

I would rethink the wood on the ceiling. The others are right, your ceiling is too low for it to have wood on it, and it will make the room feel dark and heavy. Paint the ceiling another color, if you must do something.

I wouldn't do just a part of the ceiling. It will look like you ran out of money. How would you end it? It will be a different height from abutting ceiling.

How about a wood paneled accent wall for the dining area instead?

Maybe wood colored accent wall in dining room instead of white.

Wood is too dark in that small area

It really depends on the look you are going for right now it feels like it is trying to be rustic modern. I think the FP looks incomplete. if you add a beefy wood mantel and then do something like this it will also help to distract from the tv there.

BeverlyFLADeziner really nailed it in her first set of inspiration photos--lovely harmonious rugs, art, drapes instead of tacked-on ceiling. Well curated art, rugs, furnishings can go a long way to creating a feeling in a room.

Chiming in to say, there's a risk of what's called "remuddling" with your wood ceiling idea. You already have stone wall that seems a bit out of place with the fixed modern "givens"--smooth kitchen finishes, polished tile floor, black smooth fireplace, pool outside. : There are other ways to get the earthy feeling you want without a wood ceiling.

--Fix layout by bringing sofa forward about 2'. Bring chairs closer together to create conversational grouping, which will be anchored on a rug.

--Repaint your gray walls a warm white. Gray makes no sense if you're going for earthier look. Pick the lightest warm ivory from your stone wall. (Did the stone wall come with your house? it seems so overwhelming in a space with low ceilings, modern pot lights, etc.)

--Add a large art work in dining area
