Kitchen floorplan

last month

Can you help with my kitchen remodel? We tore out an island because it completely blocked the flow from the sink to the fridge & range. There also wasn't enough space between the island and the counters.

We are replacing with a peninsula. However now the room is a bit big for that. But better than blocking the flow.

I'm attaching my proposed floor plan. We specifically put a large counter to the left of the range as that is where most of the prep will happen. Normally when we cook at the range, we are to the left of the range prepping the food to toss into a pot on the range. I don't think I ever stand directly in front of the range. But curious if you think it's creating a pinch point.

Any advice is appreciated!

First the fridge needs to be close to the sink not the range. The center of the space room also needs lighting I would have probably not done the peninsula , which BTW barely sits 2 . I would have done a much wider entry into the kitchen a much deepr wall of cabinets on the right , maybe even a baking center . For sure some awesom true pullout pantries there and the fridge on the left wall.

w the extra lg window..shift the sink up...it doesnt need to be centered. then place fridge to the left of window. as a result the stove can be moved to near midpoint on the right hand wall. then place a small peninsula if you really want this...from the right side ..... the seats opposite each other so the people face one another.....instead of the crammed side by side situation.

since you work and prep next to the stove, I would center the cooktop on that wall.

I;d move the refrig across the room to where the dishwasher is, move the dishwasher to the other side of the sink. or at the peninsulas spot for cleanup from the dining space.

a single stool at the peninsula on the kitchen side. if you need it.

Is the window above the sink a given? it's pretty wide.

What is the room right near the kitchen? a dining room? I'd fill that wall to include dining storage.

Open kitchens are moving on. Keep the mess out of sight.

@Lyn Nielson thank you. Unfortunatley the wall to the right of the sink isn't big enough to fit a 36" wide fridge. The window above the sink is a given unfortunately. It's a big wide box/bay window that we hate but we don't have the money to change it.

The room to the right of the sink is a wok kitchen that we will convert to a walk-in pantry. The room to the left of the range side is the dining room.

Edit to above (can’t edit my comment using the app) it looks like you’ll have a single door fridge so space to the wall would be less of an issue if the door swings away. I’d still check the specs for clearances needed on either side and behind.

Some thoughts: for a minor limited-budget reshuffle and your particular needs, this looks decent with a few tweaks. The fridge-prep counter-range setup is just how I would want things for my own style of cooking which sounds very similar to yours. I think it will be convenient and easy, especially with a single door fridge that opens away from the prep counter. My current kitchen also has the range and sink on opposite sides of a 13 foot wide room and it is too far to be perfect, but way better than having a barrier island!

Delete the can light in front of the fridge as it will just shine a streaky strong light down the front of the fridge, being so close to a tall thing, and put a center fixture in the room that is attractive with a white glass shade(s) to diffuse light pleasantly throughout.

I agree that the peninsula is probably not a great idea - as Patricia said it barely seats two; more to the point is that I've been in kitchens with this sort of peninsula layout and it just doesn't work well. It feels too close to the wall on one side so that stool never gets use, and overall you're too far from the cook and the work to chat and keep company. You just end up staring at the other person and waiting for them to get out of the kitchen. So, I would enlarge the opening for a roomier walkway and sense of space from stuff bubbling on hot burners.

How far along are you in the project? Have you finalized your cabinet order? Are you open to significant changes? I see several issues with the current layout (one of which is that you put the range in probably the worst place possible - directly in the path through the Kitchen and where the aisle shrinks down at the peninsula).

Can the wall to the right of the range come down?
