Some early season hosta photos

last month
last modified: last month

I took more hosta photos today than I did all last season. Some mixed results.

Great Expectations survived a move. Small but looking healthy.

Sagae #2 is 4’ in diameter. Is on its third season…..I cant believe it is this big already.

Brother Stephan is recovering. It was being overwhelmed by a rose of sharon that got removed.

Sunset Grooves looking pretty good.

A transplanted Patriot liking a new spot.

Dancing Queen looking good but sporting a bit of damage from gardeners we hired. Overall the gardens look good after they cleaned them up and added leaf mulch. No mulch right here.

Voices in the Wind was added last fall.

It looks like Sum And Substance might be over its tantrum after being divided.

June Fever looking good.

Autumn Frost looking great.

Varigated Weigela isblooming now. My Miss Kim lilac will be blooming in a few days.

This is one of my 'Empress Wu's, it's in a location that was on the edge of a Western Cedar's root system. I figured the cedar was taking easily 30 gallons of water a day and once we took it down everything around it changed. That certainly benefited my Empress Wu...

It's now almost 40" tall the largest leaf i measured was 19x14"

Going to try to sneak this in here. I tried to start a new thread but wouldn't let me post. I think it does qualify as "early season photos" anyway.

I finally followed through on a portion of my want list from the alphabet pics. First time ordering from NH hostas and very happy with them. They came in 4" pots, very well packaged and nice large healthy plants. I re-potted in larger pots and will stay there for this year as I still don't know where they will go.

Anyone else do a want list or new hostas?

Such great pictures here. We have had a cold May so far. Things are certainly emerging, slowly. I was lucky that I haven’t had frost damage.

I am closer to Lake Michigan so usually this late a frost warning does not seem to hit me. We have had a lot of wind and severe thunderstorm warnings. The sirens went on three times within one week! I haven’t taken many pictures yet. Maybe today or tomorrow.

Sherry WOW everyone is looking fantastic! Happy to see you are taking pics.

Ann wonderland is really popping! You know any frost damage will soon be covered with new growth soon to be a distant memory. So beautiful!

Pieter your EW is beyond impressive! All of yours are in Canada's banana belt.

old_dirt apart from your new beauties your garden is looking sooo good! I have so many I have been waiting to plant that I did not make a list or get anything new.

Debra same cool weather here minus the sirens! It is going to warm up tomorrow and some that are pips will start to unfurl. Some already have but it poured rain all day yesterday, No pics yet but I am way behind everyone here.

They are all happy this time of the year –

I divided several of the above to thin that bed a bit - now to find new spots to plant them

Thought I'd do an update on my 'Empress Wu'. I had noticed over the course of 7-10 days or so that the plant seemed to be noticeably responding to the weather. On overcast days the plant is quite a bit more upright than on sunny days -I have the plant located in a spot where it gets plenty of direct sun from about noon onward and by season's end some of the leaves can be a bit ratty looking. Today was a largely overcast day so I went out with my trusty tape measure and the plant now tops @ 42" and the largest leaf I measured was 20" x 15", both measurements exceed what I'd posted earlier.
