Do you mean you want to change out the railing? Or redirect the way the stairs enter the living area? Or something else?

^^^^^ After reading your post, I was wondering the same as @Design Fan (NE z7a). Changing out railings/balusters/newel posts is one thing - changing the entire direction of your staircase is quite a different endeavor.

Your stair could have been a graceful curve down to the first floor if the stair configuration had been designed with all the steps being equal wedge shapes. Since your stairs change width the railing and newel posts had to follow the stair design.

Are you prepared to reconstruct those stairs or not? If not then there is no way to actually improve the railings except to either paint them or exchange them for metal units.

My in-laws had their stairs turn similar to yours to maximize the space in their living room. However theirs were made with a squared-off 90-degree turn which resulted in a simpler railing. Your stair framing has a couple angles which in turn cause the jogs in the railing.

You may improve the look of the railing with less colonial looking posts/balusters and/or paint.

But it would be expensive to reconstruct the stairs to remove the angles. You would also lose a lot of living space if the stairway came down straight into the room.

Perhaps painting the balusters the same color as the walls would help them ‘disappear’.

What's the budget? My guess is your home is what it is due to the cost differance from what Bev suggeted.
