DIY wood stain problem

Hi… my entire home has light oak wood and I stained the other white oak accents that I had with american walnut wood stain but when i did these cheaper fir wood shelves that I turned into a DIY closet, they turned red.

I’m wondering, would you start over? Cut new wood and stain them a more subtle color? Please kindly advise. Asking before I add some end caps and motion sensored lights. Thx.

Finish the closet as is and close the door. It is a closet after all. Unless Martha Stewart iis stopping ny I do not think anyone will call the decorator police.

Yeah, a closet is a closet. The moral of the story, though, is that when staining, it's helpful to test first. Either on scraps of wood, or with shelves like yours on the back underside.

Leave as-is or prime/paint them the wall color (you’ll have to repaint every so often due to scuffs).

If it bothers you, start over. Use a wood like birch veneer and just use polyurethane to seal it but keep it light like the white oak floors. If you stain the new shelves, use a scrap to test the stain and use wood conditioner first. Then add poly to seal it.

If you start over, consider using slide hardware so you can pull those lower shelves out to see the shoes, etc. more easily.

Looks fine to me! No different than any other wood you may put in the house - tables, chairs, bookcases. You would do them the same as your floors or wood trim, you would compliment them.

Looks nice to me. I would l leave as-is. It's a closet, who cares if it's a not a perfect match to other things as long as it looks good.

Not so fast there friends. This could be classic skeltons in the closet as far as op is concerned. Haven't you ever woke up in a sweat after dreaming about misdeeds you were guilty of decades ago? Some of us can't just close the door and forget.

    fir isn't white oak.

if you want it to match, buy white oak boards and try a stain in a weathered oak to match the floor.

you could get other fir and try to match one of these colors to you floor.

OR, paint the fir shelves white or some other color. (prime first and then use a semi gloss paint)

If it really bothers you, paint them. Those look like they're Douglas fir framing lumber.

The world will not end if all the wood does not match , go have a glass of wine and relax

Maybe you can cover the shelves with shelf liner/contact paper.

Adhesive shelf and drawer liner ! I love that idea. Any chance you can make yourself available to help rfharmon chose one they will love?

Lol. I wouldn't dream of it. Clearly that honor belongs to you.
