What do you mean by mid-century modern? I like the floor lamp- and if left to my own devices- I would lean into that vibe- which is perhaps another ’take’ on ”mid-century”. (Maybe I’m biased, as I have a similar floor lamp in my LR.)

Do you have to part ways with the charcoal sofa? It seems to work in the space and could be a nice foundation.

As far as storage: How about a cool bar cabinet? You don’t have to be an alcohol drinker and neither am I. It was a bar cabinet in a former life- now it’s a bookcase, etc.

You could also get a storage ottoman/bench to use as coffee table.

A couple of throw pillows and a throw- and you’re done.

If you have art that you love, and/or find some art that you love- you could possibly put art over the sofa and or hang art from the beam- suspend it - in front of the brick wall. You could perhaps flank a piece of art on the sofa wall with plug-in wall sconces.

Is there a tv in the space?

We need info please . Is there a need for a TV? The lamp is certainly not MCM but at this point we have no idea about the space. As mentioned you can hang stuff on brick but first we need to know a lot more about your needs,, a to scale floor plan too.

Is that a wood ceiling? Screw in hooks and use fishing line to hang the pictures.

"Brick" is not original and looks like an awkward application. Take it off. If walls are damaged add some paneling. Better wall for a sofa, too.

Is this an indoor area...I ask because of the plastic over the window.

Need more pictures & dimensions of the room. i definitely would NOT hang anything from the ceiling. My first thought was to drywall over it.

Here’s a couple of ideas. I think if you got the right type of command strips they would hold on the brick- although I wouldn’t hang anything too heavy. Ignore the console in 2nd pic-just wanted to show the accessories.

I feel like you can do extraordinary things with that area. I am not much into mid-century modern style but I hope you can do similar like what @Emily posted here. Good luck!

Here is inspiration to help design around a brick wall.

It doesn't look like brick. It looks like textured tiles or some kind of faux brick panels to me. If that is the case, you can drill through the tile with a drill bit specifically made to drill through tile. Use the instructions from Jan above but get a drill bit for tile. You will likely not need a hammer drill, just a regular drill if it is porcelain tile.

It also looks like there are panels that hinge up on the part that extends into the room. Can you place things on that or do you need to open it for storage?

Whatever it is, if the OP is renting, there will be no drilling, painting, or removing it. Plus, maybe the OP prefers not to drill, paint, or remove it.

Regarding hanging art on/in front of the brick: As I mentioned in my first comment (at top of thread) - one way could be to hang it with wire. You can check Amazon for “picture hanging wire.”

Didn't the OP state that the wall is brick? He/she lives there so I think we have to take their word for it.

IMore photos and layouts of space would help. Is this a basement or room with few windows? I am curious about the top of the ledge. or bench - whatever it is. Appears it is for storing something. Will you keep that? Some advisers showed photos with different furniture. As the color comes across on my device, I would try combinations of dull orange, aqua, and soft white.

I would extend the shelf to the corner and install wood slats on the bottom with a wood top so that it looks like a built-in wall to wall console. You can highlight the grout joints in a dark brown with a grout pen. I'm showing a green sofa with MCM inspired accessories.

smart instinct to use the ceiling beams for hanging plants and lighting. id add a brass globe chandelier and hang some macrame planters right over the built-ins to draw the eye up.
