We don't know where you are, but Lupines do very poorly in hot/humid summer climates. And while the picture above looks very pretty, lupines after bloom do not. They are also short lived, require sandy dry soil and tall ones may need staking.

Thanks for all the info! I live on the plains in Colorado. Definitely get a decent amount of sun overall, but I would consider that area partial sun in the late afternoon.

I'm looking at using delphiniums instead of lupines as the back border and staking them. From what I've found they like their soil more moist than the sage does, but I think it would be possible to grow them by each other? Any thoughts on that?

Admittedly it would probably just be easier to put plants with similar water needs in the same area, but I'm liking this combination. Just not sure if it's entirely practical so thought I'd put it out there.

Would not recommend delphiniums for a hot summer climate. Even in cool summer areas - like mine - they struggle and are rarely perennial. Stick with the lupins. Aside from being your state flower, they are much more tolerant of the heat and dryness of your climate and will/should be reasonably perennial. Cut them back hard after flowering to avoid lupine aphids and to regenerate the foliage.

Most garden plants love partial sun in the late afternoon when the heat is most intense. It might still be too much for Allysum.

Native plants would be ideal and attract butterflies.

Russian Sage and Salvias, etc. are not native but are adapted to similar conditions. They don't all have to be from Colorado.

I have these together...the Russian Sage grows very tall and thick. Limelight hydrangeas.

In the midst of it all I have a tall stone column sundial I brought from our first house 1910.

I saw a picture of Russian sage and pink yarrow together. it was very beautiful and they are both sun, wind, and drought tolerant. I grow perennial salvia with my Russian sage but I’m wanting to get pink yarrow as soon as i can.
